haha! It CAN BE terrifying! Yes, I absolutely believe letting students choose their own books is so important. Since this video, I've created book clubs for my class with 6 books that are on various levels of difficulty. The students choose their club, which still gives them choice, but I'm also able to assess a little easier. But we still do their own choices for independent reading:) The most important thing is to instill the love of reading.

Thank you so much for this; it is so helpful! I’m tutoring a girl right now who hates reading but is incredibly extrinsically motivated. My goal has been to find her books she’ll like to read so the motivation will turn to intrinsic and she’ll actually enjoy reading. It’s been hard to find videos on helping older kids read and I’m so glad I got this one recommended.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m going to be tutoring jr high students in reading and I’ve never done this before but I’m so excited. I’m a lifelong reader and I’m hoping to make a difference for these kids.

Oh that's exciting!! You WILL make a difference:) It's important for students to experience the benefit of LOVING reading a really good book and not always being told what to read. If you learn any good tips, let me know!

Hi! Love this! So simple and focuses on READING! Your award for most pages read each month, does that start over again at the beginning of the new month so all kids get a new chance, or do your previous pages still get counted?
@LoveThemWell
@LoveThemWell 2 года назад
Hi! It starts over each month. But at the end of the year I will have an overall winner.

I see so many flaws with this system: my kids cheat a lot. And just copy notes from the screen when I ask them to summarize the texts. Ugh… this wouldn’t work for me.

I agree. This would work to benefit some students that are honest. Unfortunately, we are living in an era where students are easily bored, want instant gratification, have drastically reduced attention spans, are struggling to read at grade level, & don't even try with high-level thinking.

It's tough to find what works for different groups. And each year can be so different! I hope you have found something helpful!
