Thank you for this. I adopted a deaf dog for the 1st time. And felt funny that my instinct was to not use a name signal. I find your tips very helpful ❤ love all your videos!

Out of curiosity could a remote collar be used as an orientating "tap on the shoulder" for distance work?

This is a really great question! Some people will use a vibration only (NOT shock/stim) collar with deaf dogs but it's something I generally caution against. Even if they're trained by vibration = treats, many dogs will still find the sensation unpleasant, startling or even scary. Others will completely ignore it. My general advice is don't waste your time and money. Instead, spend the time teaching a strong "check in" and disengagement (the dog minds their own business by default ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-73Ab4c6CCyY.html). If a deaf dog isn't bombproof with those things then they really should be on a long line (unless the area is fenced). There's just too much that can go wrong and, for me, it's not worth risking a deaf dog's life when a long line still gives so much freedom 😊 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M7Ig00Kv_4M.html)

@@k9conceptsdogtraining many thanks for your reply. I was thinking of the use in my rural setting on acreage where the dog could be at quite a distance far beyond the length of a longline. In this age of technology where everyone relies on mobile phones etc it would seem logical to enable the least restrictive environment for the dog if a technology was available. I was thinking of alternative tech as substitute for distant commands eg how a border collie is trained to respond to a shepherds whistle. I'd be interested in your thoughts on that situation.

Again, it really depends on the dog - many dogs find vibration startling/unpleasant. I much prefer teaching the concept of "proximity" so my dogs aren't choosing to go so far in the first place. For me, it's just not worth the risk 😊

@@k9conceptsdogtraining Definitely depends on the dog. I personally taught my newest pup on the vibration only recall using delicious meat and she looks like she enjoys when she feels the vibe and gets to check in for a treat. If she showed discomfort or tried to scratch/rub the collar off, I'd scrap it. Not once has she tried to scratch at it or shake it off. She's also very high food driven so that definitely helps!
