This and the other video with Pepper was incredibly helpful. I have a 4 month old rescue puppy who is anxious about everything and so trying to use some of the techniques here.

I call my 8 week old puppie’s name, she doesn’t look at me, plays with tail, looks for things to eat or runs away. It’s so frustrating but at least I get to see this work for someone else.

Omg. I am adopting a dog from the humane society and I was going to name her peppa but have as of yesterday changed it to Pippa. Can’t wait to adopt her this weekend and start working on her name

What do you do if the dog doesn’t engage even with the first lure/treat-based exercise. I have a rescue (previous street dog) who is not consistent with engaging with me enough to train like this

Have you tried doing it with toys if the dog has a toy drive?

You need to find what drives them, sometimes that is a specific food, toys or specific toy, cooked meat works. Alternatively if you plan on really regular daily training take their normal food you would normally put in their bowl and hand feed them while training, this has worked for me on a dog that was neither food nor toy driven. They learn quickly after a few days that they need to work for the food.

Ideally yeah, with larger breeds they don’t stop growing past 1 so spaying earlier than they’ve matured can cause some health issues. The general rule is to get the spayed after they’ve had at least their first heat :)

Wonder how you feel about people renaming dogs that have been rescued, do you feel it's right/wrong or is one of them where in it depends on the dogs age etc and if so, where do you draw the line?

Is your dog treat driven? If so then maybe one of those toys you can stuff with food works (they're usually used for training hunting dogs I think) it looks like a pen case (?). My dog didn't enjoy playing either but I did manage to teach her fetch by using one of those toys; she won't fetch anything else though 😅

@@dodopson3211 I tried a kong. One (that isn't food driven) enjoyed a lot. The other one that is food drived got tired really quickly because couldn't get out the food

@@kbytex nah I didn't mean a kong I mean a snack dummy (yes i looked up the English name). First you get them interested in biting it & letting go (get a treat for that) Then you throw it at their feet and they pick it up and you lure them to you (might want to attach a leash to either your dog or the dummy incase they want to run off and chew on it) And you increase the distance little by little until they actually play fetch. Mine can do it off leash now (without running off to go snuff some bunny butt or something) but I do need to leash the toy else she runs off with it trying to get the treats out 😅

@@kbytex I don't know if it works for your dog, but it does work for mine (as long as she's rewarded with treats because for her it's really about the food). The only function the food dummy had was to smell like food so she initially wanted to eat it 😂 else there was no way I could get her interested in biting any other toy.
