How to tell fast if virgin queen is mated yet

Great bee yard! I had a hive swarm on me June 9th. I've left them alone. Today July 7th I check for any sign of a queen. As soon as I popped the cover there were drones all over. And I found a plumped up queen. There were not that much drone brood when they swarmed. I didn't think much of it till this video. These little critters are incredible. Thanks for the videos!

I recently started learning to make my own queens because it's so expensive to keep buying them. This is very helpful additional information.

I have purchased seven packages from Barnyard Bees. I have been very happy with the health and quality of the bees sent to me. Every package had just a very few dead bees on the bottom of the package box. Job well done.

Hello from Dublin, ireland. hope your season is doing great and the bees are happy girls. I am bee keeping coming my secound year. i started with 2 hives. and this year i doubled it to 4 now. Here is what happened me first. out of my 2 hives only one hive was very productive. the other queen was rubbish. she was laying drones in small cells instead of drone cells. I have since split my hives and now have 4. the queen from last year is still a very strong queen and i have her in a new hive since yesterday. the hive she came from is also doing extremely well. The other 2 which were split, 1 is still in a nuc as i didn't want to disturb it too much as it was very small, i did put a full frame of capped larva in to help the hive get stronger for next year as i tend to expand my hive up to minimum of 8 maybe 10. so what i am looking to know is helpful advice. My bee's are native Irish bees. the queen is the new his she did lay brood and its capped. but the bees were very quite. Now irish bees tend to be quite when they have a queen, they just work very fast, and organized. Any advice helps

Thank you for the video. Maybe it was one of your videos I saw a few years ago showing and telling how to tell if a hive is queen right. The worker bees would flit their wings for a second occasionally. I see the bees in this hive doing that.

Well that explains my situation. I had done a queen cell split on the 10th of April and the cell was on a frame of mostly honey but had a small patch of brood at the bottom with mostly drone. I shook in bees and moved them up the hill. The next day most of the bees left and I had a small hand full still in the hive with the newly hatched queen. I figured they will do what they can. I watched that queen leave that hive more five times and one time when I went up to look, there where ten times as many bees back in the box. Heck I thought they was getting robbed with the bees going in but I saw pollen so....

Ok, I have been watching videos and now very interested and intrigued with the bee keeping.

Have to say well done mate! You're part of a very small group that are saving the world if you study our ecosystem like I do! I'm watching a lot of clips as I've just found a hive in my back yard with my husband, we live in New Zealand so it's very cold but they're are bumble bees and we are doing our best to keep them happy ;) We just want to keep them that way. I've seen a few new lava I think as its summer here, it's only small as they used a birds nest to make their home in (only about the size of at soccer ball). Clever wee buggers!! But do you have any tips we could do to help them stay strong and survive. Hehe, they're our crazy new family members!! ♡☆♡

Have a split that's queenless, the other split got taken over by a swarm I cought the day before. Talk about luck.

I have 4 all white hives and they are all lined up in front of our Gardenias facing the same way towards the yard. We are waiting to get our bees and start getting in business. We are still learning when it comes to this and hopefully we will be successful at this

Could be the increase in population is from the hatching brood you installed at the time you made the start. Takes 35 to 40 days or so before you will have any hatched workers from a cell start. Thanks for the vids appreciate your time. Nice to see you have a carniolan in the yard.

I am in my second year of beekeeping. Last week I had a real strange Behavior the front of the beehive. I know that I had a unmated queen possibly an unmated Queen in this particular hive. And then something strange happened they acted like they were swarming but they never swarmed on a smaller scale. A lot of excitement going on is the front of the hive an extra drones more than normal and the bees were kind of aggressive and that's not normal for me and I even saw a worker stinging one of the drones. After watching this video I realized that Queen went out and came back made it and brought a bunch of bees back with her thank you nobody can answer this behavior that I saw. I am going to go into this hive this week and see what's going on

My hive swarmed twice, now I noticed that there is a qeen hanging out on the front of the hive they swarmed from. she has been there for 2 days now and I'm getting worried.

Lee G What are advantages of splits with , allowing the bee's to make their own queen verse buying a new queen and putting her in when the split is done. Also thoughts on painting boxes black in the winter so the sun light will keep hives warmer. Finally, pros or cons on putting 10x powdered sugar in the top for them to eat. Thanks; Lee G

great video! I had a colony of 2 deeps that went queen less so I got another queen in small screen queen box with attendants. I place the little screen box on top of frames to see how they react...they seem not to aggressive so decided to release her...bad choice...they immediately balled her. You would think that if they were queen less they would not be aggressive to a new queen? I just wonder if I maybe missed a virgin queen? live and learn....thanks!

I had a wild swarm of honeybees in my yard this summer. They built a tidy round hive (I count 6-7 visible broodcombs now) under the eaves of the workshop. My worry is: will they survive the prolonged winters, which get below freezing, up here near the Canadian border? Must they be re-homed before freezing arrives to save them?

How secure are your hives during a storm on those blocks? Did you ever had any problems during strong winds and hurricanes?

Good information. Thank you. I have a question and I am a 6 day old beekeeper.....yaahh. What is a easy or better way to find a queen in an newly 10 frame hive with a newly installed package of bees. I was trying to find the queen yesterday, 5 days after install but I could not find the queen. The queen cage is empty, so I know that she got released. I do not know if she is alive. It looks like that my bees are busy like in your video and they are building comb on the wax foundation, looks like they started in the middle and I was impressed how much comb they had build already in just a few days. Also it looks like honey and some cells filled with dark stuff.....maybe pollen? What are your thoughts of marking a queen? I thought about marking the queen whenever I find her. Thanks.

What queens do you have... Heinz 57 (feral), or specific strain, Buckfast, Carniolan, or breed yourself from stock..? Just interested in the NA approach... Enjoy your vids..... I also noticed common use of just 2sided roof, where in UK and Europe 4sided roof is common yet in NA where Winters can be much harsher I see 2sided roof used. Is this common?. Do you change the roof in Winter?, which is costly or use quilt covers?

Hi David, I live in tropical Indonesia. I have a question: I bought 1 colony of mellifera (european honey bee) in a langstroth box, about 7 frames full of bees, from an apiary 40 kilometers away. In my home area there are no mellifera colony, as locally we only have apis cerana. When the time comes for a split, how much are the chances of my colony splitting successfully, as the only drones here are from this same colony only? Should I buy 1 more colony, or 2? Thank you for any thoughts.

Thank you! Really Wonderful information. I had a sudden thought about the virgin queens being "shy". Of course they are shy!! All the "other", if present, virgin queens want to kill her! In fact, some of the workers that like the "other" virgin queen that might have just emerged somewhere down in another hidden corner of the hive might want to kill her, too! Zoikes!! everybody I watch on youtube has a label and your my go to guy for splits. That said, can I do an early spring split with no queen in new hive and get them to make hatch and return mated without much worry of acceptance using a 2 frame barnyard bee nuc box?

David, why do you have that huge mown lawn next to all those bee hives? Why isn't it sown up as a wild flower meadow for necter harvest?

What pound mono do you use on your frame with the wax strip at the top? Looks like 50 lb. On mating nucs..I cant get them to work on the small version with small frames and a cup of bees and a capped queen cell.. What do you think I'm doing wrong?

Dave, I've only been keeping bees for 5 years and with poor success. I am a continuous student, reading and watching videos, but have never seen or read anywhere that queens returning from a mating flight bring workers and drones back with her. Where did you get that data? I'm not challenging you but want to know more.
