I would think the top hive feeder you use would help the hive defend better being that the robbers are confused on how to get in. I know they would eventually figure it out but the activity around the entrance is rather calm compared to the feeder screen.

good tips ,bee keeping 3 days now and spotted same behavior on my hives (2) handled problem same way . moved the weaker hive and reduced entrance on both.wasnt my bees from either hive that were robbing was a feral hive(democrat)bees,they just wanted what mine had worked for .funny thing is before i got my bees i had only seen maybe 7 honey bees in 3 years where i live now they coming from everywhere .had casualties on both hives but wasnt major .

This is great. I didn't know better, and this summer had a two-deep hive get completely robbed out in a week. Talk about a painful lesson. I shut down the entrance and the hive rebounded, so I got lucky, but ... opening that hive and seeing EVERYTHING gone and 30 frames full of dispirited bees was not a happy day. Anyway, thank you for this very timely video that expands on some of the crazy stuff I saw this year! P.S. Awesome entrance reducers.

Daily videos!! Love it. I am making up those screens now and I'm wondering if they will prevent mice and other pests from bothering my hives this winter. Seems like a mouse could push through but wouldn't want to. Either way, it would show a problem if you see the screen pushed in. Any past experience with this?

I've always been interested to know the "WHY" they chose a specific hive. I know sometimes you'll have other hives next to each other and they are all full of resources but they specifically target "ONE" out of the dozens that are in there! I guess the scout's Antenna tells them that the defense line isn't as strong as it should be and that you have a chance here? Also, I would love to know from your experience on the months where robbing occurs, regardless of dearth. Thanks for always posting awesome videos! Someday we are going to drive up there from PA and meet you!! ~John

I remember watching a group of red wasps go for a beehive, they hit the entrance and the alarm was sounded. one wasp would grab a bee or 3 or 4, and basically bite their heads off, by that time, 4 or 5 honeybees were on the wasp, and it was over. loved watching the action, as all the wasps suffered the same fate

Mr. Barnyard: Are these robbing situations, one of your hives robbing another? Or are they wild bees robbing?
@Fireheart1945
@Fireheart1945 3 года назад
I'd guess it's his own bees robbing each other. Early in the video he talks about bees from one hive not remembering their own hive entrance when they go to rob each other, so likely the robber bees are from this yard, not from some wild hive.

@shaunbarker9201
@shaunbarker9201 7 лет назад
Hey David love your videos as always. You said it's going up to around 80*f lol. How we would love that heat here in the uk. It's going to be 61*f today Sunday October 8th. 2017. 80*f is a fairly hot summers day for us. Ya know you dropped the frame a few days ago,well I had the kinda same problem. I was inspecting and an empty brood with frames in acting as a stand behind me. Pulling frames out of the hive and swapping empties for full frames to get the comb drawn in an upper brood. Just so the queen could lay up there. We use mainly poly hives here as a matter of course 6 and 10 frames. Yup so back to the hive and frame issue,I was going back to the hive to pull a frame, a bee either went to go foraging or took a dislike to me. She flew up my hoody sleeve,it kinda shocked me I moved back and knocked the brood box with a frame of bees in. They went everywhere flying around,sadly a few didn't make its around 40-50. So that's the upshot of the message always have plenty of room to move around.

"You can tell. You will know." Isn't very informative. I know you are farming brood/queens but seeing all of those tiny hives makes me think, "well of course they are being robed. They don't have the space to grow into a strong colony. It reminds me of Chinese bound-feet. You /can/ keep your bees in a nuc, but you might be creating work for yourself."

I have no respect for a honeybee that, rather than put forth the hard work necessary to earn a living the right way, would instead resort to a life of crime. What self respecting bee does that? Just goes to show you that raising a bee the right way starts in the hive with a responsible queen and drone who lovingly set limits early on. Smh.
