I just discovered this video, six years later and after the awful pandemic. I hope you and your lovely plants are well. My cacti are the Thanksgiving ones. I didn't know there was such a difference, so thank you! One bloomed right around Thanksgiving, and the other not until just before Christmas, but they are the same species, just different colors. They are blooming aleady this year. Interestingly enough, they also bloomed at Easter time. I live in Northern CO, so our weather is a little wonky. They are near a window that is North facing.

Thats fantastic news your Thanksgiving cacti are blooming already, I bet they are beautiful, and these cacti grow well in north facing windows, I have one of my Thanksgiving cactus that sometimes re blooms in the Easter, I think it wants to be an Easter cactus too haha, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Tuesday XXXX

I have one of the thanksgiving variety as well, bought it as a christmas cactus after the holiday on sale , and never disappointed by her beautiful flowers. it normally blooms every three to four months, except for this year, she seems to do best in a west/ southwestern window, as we do not have north facing windows , but that would be a lovely place for one and bright light as well?

@@pjfountaine7755 Thats wonderful your Thanksgiving cactus produces beautiful blooms for you, yes these cacti do well in a west or southwest position as well as a north window too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and have a fantastic Sunday XXXX

Here in America Thanksgiving Cactus are sold as Christmas Cactus also. True Christmas Cactus are readily available in stores here. You either have to get a cutting from someone, get it handed down to you from family, or be lucky enough to come across one for sale. From what I've heard the true Christmas Cactus isn't sold readily because it's not as reliable bloomer as Thanksgiving Cactus. I was lucky enough to get some cuttings of a true Christmas Cactus this Spring. It's grown so much and I look forward to it blooming. Thanks for a great education video. There's a lot of people here in America that need to know the difference. Here's to a lovely gardening week ahead!

grow.eat.create.love I received a cutting of a Christmas cactus from someone who had a plant so old and big, the inner main parts of the plants looked like branches on a tree, with the peddles growing from them.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) its so strange how its so difficult to find Christmas cactus now compared to Thanksgiving cactus, and I think that you are right that it may be down to the fact that its easier to get Thanksgiving cacti to bloom,thats brilliant news that you were gifted some cuttings of Christmas Cactus and I bet you are looking forward to seeing the blooms in the future too :-) thanks a million for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and tons of happy growing and Plant Power from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Tuesday today XXXXX

I believe true Christmas cactus aren’t readily available, commercially, because they’re very fragile, and damage during shipping. I love these, and I would love to get a cutting of a Christmas cactus, like the ones Granny had!

Thanks for showing the difference. I'm fairly certain I have a Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus in the same pot (I'll have to check when I wake up) but I cross pollinated them and I picked the fruit yesterday. Now all I have to do is revisit your harvesting video. You have so much knowledge to share and I appreciate it so much since my dad is no longer here to answer all my questions. Btw, my dad had a small nusery when I was a kid and he would repurpose 2 liter plastic coke bottles for his plants esp when rooting. He'd cut the bottoms out and place the bottle over the cuttings to have a terrarium-like affect and bottles that had plastic containers connected to the bottom for support would get used for other things such as planting seed. Recycling is wonderful for our planet and our wallets! 😃🌸💕

Hi Lynn, I would love a true Christmas Cactus, and an Easter Cactus. 2 years ago I bought what I thought were 2 Easter Cacti (round about Mothers Day UK) When I got them home although they were in flower, I discovered that actually I had bought what I now know to be Thanksgiving Cacti!! Managed to reflower them both too, which is a first, and my red one has just started to form buds again. Hope I can bloom the pink one too again. I have trouble finding the Easter Cactus as I would love the Orange one!! But given the above, seems most Garden Centres don't know the difference!! Your videos are really informative. Good Luck with the New Greenhouse when you get it, and hope all your wacky plants survive in the Polytunnel this winter. Wish I had more windowsills, but 9 orchids, the mother of all spider plants, plus detached pups, and 2 thanksgiving Cacti is to many already. All my orchids bar 2 are mini ones, and I still run-out of space!!

Yeah even here in the U.S. where many (most) DO recognize Thanksgiving, the retailers all sell Thanksgiving cactus mislabeled as "Christmas" cactus. It's hard to find a TRUE Christmas cactus for sale anywhere. I got mine as a start last year at a nursing home craft bazaar. Super lucky find. Thanksgiving cactus are everywhere for sale...just not under the correct name.

Now I know why the truncata is sold as a Christmas cactus in stores.I recently got buckleyi cuttings and they are surprisingly fragile for succulents/cacti.Whenever I feel my truncata,it’s pretty hardy and not fragile.Bt the buckleyi was fragile for succulents/cacti.The buckleyi feels like it can snap at any time if you make a wrong move.Anyways my buckleyi cuttings are in water and are doing well.Already grew roots during shipping somehow
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 года назад
Thats fantastic news Alex that your buckleyi cuttings are rooting already :-D and so true indeed the true Christmas cactus buckleyii is a lot more fragile of a plant compared to the truncata, and the buckleyii drops its buds very easily if moved or temperature fluctuations, but the truncata is much hardier and withstands being moved positions and temperature changes and environments much more and makes it an easy sell for many nurseries :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXXX

Very informative video. Thanks! We live in Canada, Cacti are not our first choice of plants and even our local nursery doesn't know any difference amount them. They're all labelled as "cactus". It's the same for succulents, they're just called succulent so I never know what their real names are. I find it very annoying.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 7 лет назад
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) I know exactly what you mean about the bad labelling on cacti in garden centres and shops, they always seem to just be labelled as 'Cactus' or 'Succulent' with no mention of the variety of cactus or succulent that it is, and because there are so many different varieties of these plants it can be difficult to find out what type they are, it maddens me too as I feel that Nurseries and garden centres should have all their plants lbelled with the actual name of the plant we are buying, I see it as just laziness from the trade Nurseries that they can't be bothered to label the plants they are selling on to the Garden stores and centres, and the care instructions if any that come with them are often disastrous too LOL! I have bought cacti with care instructions with 'much water and shade' for a Desert Cactus, so disastrous for newbies too if they took that advice :-) thanks a million for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Tuesday today XXXXX

Desert Plants of Avalon Thanks for your reply. I have to agree the lack of proper labeling was a product of laziness. Mislabeling really annoys me too. I was at one of the biggest nurseries in town just two days ago looking at their succulents. They put a "Hens & Chicks" tag on an Echeveria, and an Echeveria tag on some random sedums. So yea, if we followed some the instructions on the tag that could definitely spell disasters.

All the Christmas cacti I've seen in stores are actually thanksgiving cacti or hybrids with mostly truncata heritage. We see a lot of true Christmas cacti in peoples homes, but they usually got them as cuttings from a friend or relative. I was able to get some cuttings of the real thing on EBay this spring. Since they are so easy to propagate, make such huge plants, and are so well loved, lots of people are selling them on EBay. I think the situation here is that our greenhouses don't grow their own "mother plants" anymore. They buy crates of cuttings from a wholesale nursery every spring, pot, root and grow them through the summer and fall for sale during the holidays. The nurseries only grow plants of about five different hybrids, which I will admit usually have larger and more colorful blooms. but they are mostly derived from S. truncata. As far as I've been able to see, S. buckleyi is just as reliable a bloomer as truncata, but the blossoms are slightly smaller and come in a single color. When they bloom, both species are magnificent. The term Thanksgiving cactus is a relatively new phrase. In all the old books, they called them "crab cactus". I guess some nursery, somewhere, decided that "crab cactus" wasn't very marketable, so they invented the "Thanksgiving cactus"

I know this video is old, but the leaf and flower arrangement/style on my (ID'd thanks to your video!) Thanksgiving cactus is the same as you've shown; but mine starts to bud in late December and blooms properly in mid to late January. I have had it bloom in mid to early December too. Could it be a hybrid? Also, what are those long white things sticking out of the flowers? I've never seen that before!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Год назад
Hi Christina :-D thats wonderful your Thanksgiving cactus blooms for you yearly, yes these plants can vary quite a bit and there are many different hybrids and some are more prone to flowering earlier, I notice that this year all of mine are still in bud in January and usually by now most of them would have been flowering or finished flowering, they can vary in their flowering times year to year due to the temperatures being different from previous years, we have had quite a cold spell here in Ireland and Uk in early December and it has set them back by about 6 weeks, but strangely I have noticed the same with my Thanksgiving cacti I have indoors as they are all slow to open their buds this month also, the long white threads are filaments from the flowers, but these plants also produce long white threads in between the leaves ( clades ) that are little fine aerial roots where they take up moisture from the environment, thanks so much Christina for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

Help. I am trying to identify a Schlumbergera sp cactus I have. Unfortunately I don't know its origin. The leaf form is basically that of Schlumbergera truncata with the sharp edge notches but rather than flower at the centre of the terminal leaf pads it flowers either at the junction of leaf pads or actually in the leaf notches. The flower form looks more like Schlumbergera x reginae but that also seems to flower at the tips of the leaf pads. Any ideas?

Thanks so much Lori for your wonderful comment :-) sometimes these beauties will flower on their own but sometimes when they refuse to flower it can be down to the extra hear and or lighting in our homes, as the cooler nightime temperatures and the shorter day length is what triggers these plants to form buds :-) if you have your Christmas Cactus in a room where you have the lighting on of an evening it may be best to move it to a room that doesn't have any additional lighting as the lights in the room can sometimes make the plant think the days are longer than they are LOL! but sometimes it doesn't make a difference as my Cactus is in my office with the lights on of a night and it is still coming into bud, I think these plants have a mind of their own haha! :-) thanks a million for watching Sis and sending you an abundance of love and happiness from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Tuesday XXXX
