How to tell when your soap is fully cured | A fool proof method | Cold or Hot Process Soap

How do you know know when soap is fully cured and ready to use? Weather you are using cold process, hot process or even melt and pour you may have heard a number of things. Most soap makers will tell you to wait 4-6 weeks to make sure it's fully cured but there has to be a fool proof way for you to know when your soap is ready to use. Simply measure the weight of your soap bar for a few days until the soap stops loosing weight. You will then know that they lye/water solution has finished evaporating and your soap is ready to use. If you are making melt and pour soap you don't have a cure time. The soap is ready to use immediately after it hardens back up.

This is interesting. I'm going to try it when next I make soap. How about keeping the bar on a coffee filter. Write all info including dates on the filter?

Thank you for this insightful video. I made my soap, cut it after 48hours and left it to cure for about 4weeks. After which I weighed for 2 days after and the weight was consistent but 7weeks later, the weight had dropped by 0.14oz. I want to start up a business and I want to know how best to manage this in order not to mislead my customers

Good question. The only thing I can think of is your scale could be off or you are not placing your soap directly centered on the scale. Also, make sure you rotate your soap as it cures . Once I left my soap on one side for a really long time while it cured… I could tell the water content did not fully evaporate from that one side. Good luck. It’s a lot of learning.

What about PH testing do you check to see if the level is right before using or do you just wait the 4-6 weeks for cold process soap?

You should be able to check the PH at the time its cured as well. I don’t check my PH on soap often but once it’s cured you can check it. I typically use the same recipe so I feel confident once it’s cured. Most of the time you will be waiting about 4-6 weeks anyway. It mostly depends on your water discount in the recipe you are using.
