This is how you can test the inner joint on a cv axle. No removal necessary.
As always, constructive criticism is welcomed and encouraged. I’ll take hate too if that’s all you got.

I watched 10 videos to find a way to explain how to inspect a half shaft, all useless until I found yours. Good job. May I add that on a rear wheel drive car, you will get vibration in your seat on acceleration that gets resolved when you release the gas pedal. Also you might hear a click when you first back up in your driveway.

i have a vibration. on an 06 pilot. i know my rear alignment is way off. i just replaced the lower control arms due to the rear compliance bushing being bad on both i believe the ball joints were shot too. that mostly eliminated the steering wheel shake above 70. im going to try the front axles as well to fully get rid of it, i get the alignment done finally on sunday, it still drives pretty good without it but wouldn't hurt to have it handling better

Exellent video. In my case, my Lexus had a little play at the axle shaft at differential housing and a mechanic told me that is abnormal and may cause axle seal to leak which worried me. But you were told that that play is ok by someone which makes me feel relieved. Other video also showed similar play at the axle shaft at the differential housing so I am inclined to think that what you were told is correct. Thanks for the video!

I had the car up on stands and looked all over the suspension and couldn't find anything wrong; thought I might have loose lug nuts or tie rod ends. Wish I had seen your video earlier! That is a great method to check the inner CV joints and that would have been a good thing to check. The symptoms match your description of the problem. I will definitely have to put it back up on stands. I was going to replace the CV axles, but your method will let me try to verify that they are indeed the problem, and also which side is the problem; so that I can repair only the one that is broken. Thanks.

Let me first say great video! I have a Dodge Ram 4x4 and the dealership changed the wheel barrings over a two years back. They didn’t put the cv axle back in correctly after the wheel barring replacement causing the axle to wobble and now fluid leakage. Some of the spline teeth are worn from the front differential as well. No ONE could figure what the issue was. Dodge themselves said oh you need a new torque converter! I was like yeah right. Transmission shifts perfect They said this because of the vibration shudder that I would get intermediately. Anyway finally brought it into my local tire shop and they found the damn issue! Hopefully no internal issues with differential, other than the worn spline. I’m so mad that dodge tried to screw me over! Glad I didn’t pay them 2k to fix a torque converter that isn’t the issue

Hi, I have hamming/vibrating noise coming from passenger side, when I'm sitting in driver seat. It sounds like something is spinning in uneven way. Zero up to 100 km/h nothing. It starts at 100 km/h, peaks at 110 km/h and disappears at 130 km/h. That sound is definitely connected only to car speed and not to engine rpms. Its louder when pressing gas pedal/accelerating, but it does not disappear completely when not accelerating. It’s not engine, because that sound is same when in neutral or any other gear. It’s not unbalanced tire or wheel. I tried many different wheels. Ball joints are perfectly firm. Sound does not change when braking. There is no play in wheel in any direction. I've already changed both sides bearings and inner transmission side axle homokinetic joint since I found this joint could cause this sound. No rubber boots were damaged. All looking good as new. I used high quality replacement, and nothing helped. Axle itself looks perfectly fine. I also tried clicking test when turning full left, full right and accelerating. Nothing, there is no clicking sound. Anyway, this sound started just like that 4 month ago and does not get better or worse. Still the same. I didn’t hit pothole or anything like that. Now I plan to change outer wheel side homokinetic joint, but I don’t believe it will fix it. I will be glad for any ideas and suggestions. Thank you

I think the issue started happening when I launched the car and I was getting some wheel hop. I fixed the wheel hop issue with upgraded bushings and motor mounts but the clicking noise was still there. I went under the car and started pulling on the axel and I could hear it moving ever so slightly. Tried the same on the passenger side and it has no play what so ever. I'm thinking this is my issue. Ok, Grandma hit a concrete barrier on the passenger side. a couple of years ago. About the same time I noticed a vibration at higher speeds-I thought it was the older tires. Slight vibration continued after new tires. Recently the starter went out and I noticed the passenger side CV looked wet and also the part that extends to the differential. I am wondering if the impact had something to do with that the joint and the leak. Pretty sure I will need a new seal as well. Thank you for pointing out the vibration. It had stumped me.

Inner CV axles are the "tri-pot" type containing three channels and allow some inward and outward (axial) movement along those channels. They cause problems when the driven side of the channel gets overly pitted or in worse cases gets a deep divot in one spot in all 3 channels. That's where the shaft can get out of balance under load. Unfortunately, that spot cannot be tested in the manner shown in this video if you jack the car up because the inner joint will be in a unnatural position. Test as shown but only with the car fully settled on all 4 wheels. That's when you want to feel for the dead spots which will cause the excess radial and lateral movement.

Great isolation tactics! You hear a noise..... Day to day you wonder is it getting louder, or is it something else? I safely put the front end up to try and check exactly this among other possibilities recently. It is still in the air! It is hard to describe how the noise started. It was most noticeable at lowest speeds first thing in the morning. But as soon as the parts had been moving long enough (maybe (relubricated) is was not so distinct. At high speeds a kind of WW2 Bomber sound started up resonating inside though. That's the noise it seems so hard to judge day to day. Is it really getting louder? Or is it just me? But just lately there is this new sort of clicking noise at low speeds well after any cold start. Reading comments, and the evidence from doing these steps has pretty much determined the culprit I hope. Question: Do outer cv joints also click as they begin to fail? Other youtubers give take apart demonstrations and the design is very different. Makes sense to me each design would make sort of distinct noises as it falls to ruin. Only one joint on the inner passenger side has this wiggle in the movement when isolated. But I also found play the the outer tie rod end. So that explains that wobble I have started noticing suddenly. Until checking I had no idea. I thought it might be the same thing. Now the question is how long before the inner cv joint fails and can I get it repaired before that happens? Tie rod end today if all goes well!

YES!! The vibration is so bad I Thought my lugnuts had been removed and wheel was coming off or my struts were unbolted!! Idk its horrible. Do you think it could be my suspension? If I Jack the car up my front tires extend way too far before they come off the ground but idk. I will check the axle like you did and see if its that. @COU51N.Kyle. 3 года назад
If the vibration is constant and increases with speed, then I would say it’s not your suspension. Hard to say though. Another cause of vibration could be unbalanced tires, bent wheel, or the tire surface has become uneven. I once had a tire that had a large bulge on the tread. It vibrated badly. I wish you the best of luck and I wish I could help you out in person too. Hang in there and let me know what you find.

Have some kind of clunk/pop noise when I turn lock-to-lock when im parked or when I put the car in reverse, accelerate from a standstill. No wheel hopping feeling or anything so im not sure if this is the passenger side inner axle joint. 190k on both axles, new rack & pinion (including tie-rods and swaybar endlinks), lower control arm, and lower ball joints. Ive posted all over the place from Reddit to web forums and have an appointment with the auto shop on the 12th (only available one). Did record a video which I cannot recreate the sound when the front end is lifted in the air, only when pressure is applied. Link - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RCX5GuyPjwQ.html ....cv? Front and rear motor mounts are no more than 2 years old, passenger side and transmission mounts (TSX) arent new. If it makes clunk/popping noises when at a stand still and turning left to right (steering wheel position doesnt matter and it happens only a couple times) I cant think of what else i didnt already cover that could be the culprit other than CV.
@COU51N.Kyle.
@COU51N.Kyle. 3 года назад
I agree, I think it is your cv. It’s making a lot of noise when you’re moving it in your video. I can’t say for certain of course but you’ve done a lot of diagnosing yourself and I think the shop will agree with you as well. Let me know how it goes on the 12th. From my research, it sounds like your symptoms are those of a bad outer joint on the cv axle. One test you can do is to drive in a circle with the steering at full lock. A bad outer joint will click or make noise while it’s driving in the circle.

For example, sometimes the accelerator pressing time (is 0-5km), and sometimes max 40km running time I release the accelerator that time(max. continuously 4 tik tik tik tik sound) (Turning time no sound.) I went to the garage, they check, and they don't find issues. Shoke no issue. Right side axle boot inner & outer before I change. What is the issue?

My 2003 Malibu shakes like a pup pooping peach pits betewen 45 -52 and it's more of a forward to back shake -- like something "grabs" at one point or something. and does it also when going downhill and braking.. IDEAS??
@COU51N.Kyle.
@COU51N.Kyle. 9 месяцев назад
That sounds tricky to diagnose. Initially I was thinking it was worn shocks/struts causing your car to undulate when the suspension is under load like when going downhill or braking but the “grabbing” has me stumped. I wish I could help more. I don’t have experience working on a car with those symptoms. I wish you the best of luck and hope you’ll let me know what the problem is when you find out. I’m very curious now.

@@COU51N.Kyle. I've had the bearings replaced- the rotors are new- and brakes are all new-- so it's still doing it-- which is now kind of making me think the axle itself may have a bad spot or something.

QS: When testing for a Bad CV axle, when the car is up on a lift should the tires be off the car? Or would this make a difference?

The wheels don’t have to be off, but the weight of the wheel will make the axle more difficult to move.

Sorry to hear that. That is frustrating. It sounds like it could still be the axles since the vibration got worse when a different set of axles was put on. I originally replaced my bad axle with a new Duralast axle. The vibration got worse. I bought a new axle set from DriveShaftShop and the vibration went away.

Honestly I do not know. I didn’t drive this car much once the problem occurred. I probably put less than 500 miles on it. The symptoms didn’t get any worse during those 500 miles. Complete axle failure would leave you stranded but I can’t say for sure how long it would take for that to happen.
