Having said that, I tried out reconditioning them and it took me only an hour to do it! It doesn`t matter what type of battery you want, the process works.
This finds a bad battery, but does not measure the charge stored in a battery. Put the battery in a circuit with some kind of load like a resistor to compare how charged up it is.
John RossStar Put the battery and a resistor parallel and test. Hold a resistor, any will work, one lead of the resistor on one end of the battery and one end on the other. This will give a relative value. Do the same with a good battery and compare, so you can see the difference.
A battery that has been in such a state for a long time may need some reconditioning by putting it through a few charge/discharge cycles. Read up more about it, probably also learn how to measure the internal resistance (you'll have to do some math or read up on how to do it). If the internal resistance relatively high they'll be useless for any high drain device.
There is bad advice and there is bad advice, your test of 4 identical batteries has some merit since you can compare one against the other, but what happens when you have one battery that's bad, but your multimeter test fails to identify it at all. Batteries must be tested under load to tell you much, as an example I have a 9 volt battery sitting on my desk, using a multimeter it tests 8.9 volts, hey, that battery has lots of life left! Or does it? Using a multimeter with a battery testing function, which many have, it places a load on the battery, under load that same battery tests slightly over 2 volts, suitable only for recycling. Some of the cheap Harbor Freight multimeters have the battery test function, but none of the ones I have work right, they actually read a higher voltage under load than with no load, but I have a good multimeter and its very accurate, showing me what is really going on. BATTERIES MUST BE TESTED UNDER LOAD!
