Here is an update for everyone: -Frank was compensated for letting me film. I fixed his other car and saved him over $600. I did this because he was great with letting me film the video. -I thought I made it clear but for those who are confused, this car is worth $2500 with no problems, it needs $1200+ in work to make it safe to drive, so a $1900 offer is more than fair (and he had many people check the car and not even get an offer because of the bad shape the car was in). A dealer would have given him $800 for a trade in if they even took it at all. -For those of you saying, "I would have just given him the extra $100" you are missing the point. If you give the person even more money than the car is worth, you are getting taken advantage of. No one is forcing the owner to sell the car to me, he agreed to the deal. If he didnt want to sell it, he didnt have to sell it. -Hopefully that clears somethings up for those who are confused! Hopefully the series was helpful!

+ChrisFix yeah that's true, actually he tried to lowball you, when you went with the price down he said ohh but you said that you loved the car. He tried to play with your mind but in the end you played with him. Because this is how things go, I did once a mistake when buying my first car, total dumbass at 19 years xDDD and since that I've learned the lesson.

+ChrisFix Cool thanks for your honesty. I was wondering if he was given any kind of compensation for letting you film. I guess that makes sense and that might have influenced his selling price in the end slightly. I think one of the best things about these luxury cars that if they are still in decent shape is knowing that someone previously probably paid around 30-40K for the same car you are now enjoying at just a fraction of that amount.

@Green Giant you have a twisted way of viewing standard business practices. You ALWAYS should try to get the cheaper price on goods and services if at all possible. Used cars come with risks of internal parts going kaputz. As long as the seller was satisfied with the deal - that's all the hell that matters. The only Class B guy here dude is you. If you talk me down on a price and I agree to it - I'm not being ripped off or bled. If I'm not happy with an offer, I don't have to accept. Same thing with Frank dealing with Chris. Frank agreed - so why are you pissed off? Keep in mind., Frank was not mentally deficient.
@ImTheDaveman
@ImTheDaveman 4 года назад
@Green Giant oh boo-hoo. You totally hurt my feelings. LOL. You're butt-hurt because you live in a child's fairy-tale land. Just to clarify - that place is in your head. When you shop groceries - surely you go the most expensive store available because all those other stores are just cutting the throats of honest businessmen? Same thing with medicine? Grow up son. Grow up. You should stop acting like a backward 12 year old.
@ImTheDaveman
@ImTheDaveman 4 года назад
@Green Giant I had no idea I was talking to Bill Gates himself! What an honor to meet you sir! Forgive me for my not realizing that you alone are the sole authority on business dealings. Dumb ash. I'm sure you're a wizard at finances. Which explains why you waste your time on this RU-vid channel, talking to a lowely person you consider beneath you. That almost makes me believe you really are Bill Gates. Bwahahahaa! Trust me. I dont feel the least inferior to losers like yourself. Goodbye - have a good day convincing yourself how much better you are than anyone else. Its time I run along now. I hear your mommy calling you and I dont want to get you in trouble. Cya!

Most car shoppers get too emotional about the product, imagining themselves driving it around town, telling their family and friends, thinking how cool they will look in it, etc...As hard as it is to do, you have to be emotionally detached and willing to walk away. Emotions play a huge role in the sales process. Some people will avoid a test drive all together to avoid this, but I don't recommend it, as you should ALWAYS test drive a vehicle before purchasing. And technically you want to buy a car you CAN be emotionally attached to, just don't let that play a role in your negotiating.

@@princeakilesh4881 So I've been doing a lot of studying on buying cars from dealerships and yes, Dealerships will try to put on a _lot_ of 'add-ons' and 'fees' to jack their prices up. You can tell them *NO* to any add-ons, and most, if not ALL of the fees they add are straight-up bogus. My advice would be to settle on a fair price in your budget, then, if they try to add any fees to make you pay more, tell them "I'll pay those fees if you take the amount of them off the price of the car". Not 100% sure if it'd work, but it lets them know you're adamant about sticking to your guns and if they don't agree, stand up, shake their hand and say "Adios" 😂 (just kidding, but be sure to let them know you're not afraid of walking away. That puts extra pressure on them to sell at _your_ price, not theirs)

I have been using this video series to help my son find a good cash car. It has been super valuable, great time spent with my son instructing him on the process and helping him feel comfortable taking his time and not jumping at the first thing that he looks at. My takeaways in order: 1. The process of determining the value of a car PRIOR to seeing the car might the best part of this series. 2. Finding all the things that are wrong, and determining if they are more trouble than they are worth. If not, factor the repairs into the negotiation. Seems obvious, but I didn't do that in the past. 3. Knowing what you are willing to spend, and walking away if you cannot agree on that price. I had one observation of the ChrisFix checklist. I didn't see a place to write the mileage. Maybe I missed it. But having that recorded prior to seeing the car was helpful in one case where the car's mileage was meaningfully different from the listing (around 12,000 mi different). I don't know that I would have noticed otherwise. We haven't found the right deal yet, but thanks to this series, we feel like "pros," which gives us confidence.

That's not a lowball. He outlined what it would take to fix the car, which would be over $1200. Not to mention, he didn't even talk about what it'll take to fix the back sensor as well as the front bumper. If the car was in tip top shape it would be $2500, but it wasn't that at all. So, if we assume $2500 is the standard trade in, taking off $1200 for all the things he'll need to fix would be $1300. $1500>$1300, so Chris actually gave a pretty good offer. Why does it matter what Chris's occupation is? Purchasing an item is purchasing an item, the number isn't arbitrary. Would $2100 be reasonable? Up to you. But 1900 is still lower than 2000 and that's how negotiating works. Having an even round number isn't worth $100.

I always do the brake test. If you ask the owner and he / she agrees, what's the problem? In my experience most of the cars I tested have failed the tests ;) It's not dangerous when you're within the speed limit. Brakes fail if the car stops slower than expected or ABS doesn't kick in. Most cars however failed the hard acceleration test. After like 5 test drives I decided to keep my old car, because unlike the cars I tested - it passes all the tests. Yes, I do these tests every time I leave the garage after another repair ;)
@PlasticRocket2

Testing the brakes is never a bad idea. Did this on my car once when i suspected the brakes lines may be failing and sure enough they failed. Better that they failed at that moment rather then when i need them.

i don't think it's speaking skills. knowledge beats negotiating tricks everytime. just drop knowledge and don't budge. the market is just asking price and selling price. his number was 2k, going down to 1.5k and seller asking 3k is a formality. the thing here is that the seller didn't have a number for himself. he's probably just trying to do better than trade-in, which is technically still a number i guess. but chrisfix has way more knowledge.

+Marco de la Peña Low ball is making an offer significantly lower than the value of the car. The car needs $1200+ in work if I do it myself. There is a reason why he hasnt sold it, or even got an offer after he had a bunch of people looked at it. His asking price was way too high. If he was at the $2500 it was worth, I would have offered $1900 and came up a little but he was so far away you have to offer a lower price to negotiate in the middle. That is how you buy a car.

Wonderful video Chris. I was an auto broker for nearly 2 decades and you are giving out amazing information for free. People are commenting on the fact you low-balled him but in all actuality he was selling a mislabeled car. That 2003 in mint condition wasn't worth even 2,500. In the condition it was in 1,500 was pushing it not to mention the 1,000-1,500 in work it needed. That Ford engine with 130K is also not the most reliable. Great job

It's actually illegal to do that if it's salvage I believe. At the very least it will be on the paperwork somewhere. If you're stupid enough to not even look than that's your problem. I avoided it one time because I saw a sticker in the door jamb, which had to be there legally in that state.

How to get a good deal? Have some balls, be willing to compromise on colors and/or options, and be willing to travel far. For instance, I live in Florida. I was looking for a black 2015 Civic coupe with a 5 speed manual transmission. Right off the bat the black will be more expensive and the manual transmission will drop the price because people are lazy pussies. I did some searching and was able to find the exact car that I wanted a few hours away, but in blue instead of black. I decided I would be fine with that and saved at least a few grand by driving to that other dealership. Location, location, location. Stick shift Civic in Miami=almost no negotiation because if you do don't buy it someone else will in 45 minutes. That same car in Oklahoma would be sitting on the lot for months. Be willing to drive 2, 3, 4 hours away. Hell, I know a guy that flew 600 miles away to buy a car and drove it back. Oh, and no to leather, no to the heated seats, no to everything else they ask, no again, and no to the extended warranty. Then get the longest car loan you can and pay double or triple payments if you have the money. That way if you don't have the money one month the payment will be peanuts compared to a 3 or 4 year loan that most people get.
