This involves measuring a sand in a container ideally 5cm. Then wash and decant the clay and silt until the water is very clear and you are left with sand and gravel. Once completed, you can measure the sand and gravel left behind in the container and that gives you an idea of how much sand you have in your soil.
The best bricks contain about 65% of sand and not more than 30% of clay and silt. So this test allows you to determine the nature of your soil, and whether you need to add more soil or clay to balance the mixture.
