In this video I show how to test the voltages on a switching power supply using a multimeter. We test the voltages on the power supply and also test the 5V on the game's PCB. We test the +5, 12v, and -5v. I also show how to replace the switching power supply with a new one.

This is a good video, but I just want to add one suggestion. When using a multimeter probe on a circuit board, it's safer to wrap the probe with tape so that only the tip is exposed. That way there's less risk of accidentally shorting 2 adjacent pins on a chip. If that happens while the board is powered it can cause significant damage.

Hi John - it was a great howto, I got very useful informations about wiring of the PSU. I'm working on my Neo-Geo cab restoration, and will change the molex PC ATX PSU back to original PSU-s, including all of the cable rewiring, so... thanks!

So far this has fixed my issue but it has only been one day. :) Time will tell! I remember the "comb trick" my friends used to do BITD. I should try one of these tricks now! :)

Hi John, great tutorial on changing an Arcade power supply i found it very informative, I only wished i had watched it first before i decide to change my old power supply in my Galag88 to a new Switch mode power supply as i blew the transformer up, dam. I certainly wont be blowing another one up now. thanks...

the roads and other background elements on my outrun and turbo outrun arcade cab go crazy. The self test i did said all the roms and ram chips were good so i'm guessing its the power supply. Also plugged the pcb into a computer monitor and same results. I'll test it later. I hope this is all it needs.

Great video ! To be super safe ( I am not an electrician ) , how do you test the outer Chassis to make sure its not live ? Just put one test probe on the chassis and the other probe on the ground terminal ? ( with the multimeter set to DC i guess ) Thanks

I got a more modern cheap psu but it didn't have a neg 5 volts. Is there a way to get neg 5v out of it. If I'm correct I need the neg 5v for games like double dragon. Thanks 👍

@johnsarcadegarage I have a mortal kombat 2 cab and the following are my readings on the power supply. 12v reads 13.45, +5v is at 5.00 and -5v is at 4.75. Are these within reasonable range? Thanks!

I have an Asteroids, everything original including the Big Blue Cap, is mine a linear psu? Mine are not labeled, I guess I should go thru it and write down all the current powers in case it goes out in the future?

I got my Chase HQ upright up and running with a new power supply but the screen is flipped upside down..? Would you know if there is a switch of some sort or something I could do to fix this? I looked everywhere but couldn't see anything. Thx

Thanks, these are helpful video's. i'am not annoyed!!!,I always learn from your videos.Look forward to more vids. Curious...So did this solve your problems with sound on Track & Field? As kids we would play this game with a butter knife on buttons, to run.Yeah,,, crazy huh,it works though.Makes you run crazy fast! Spent many quarters in this one.later ..
@Johnsarcade
@Johnsarcade 11 лет назад
That's the -5V wire from the JAMMA harness. I purposely do not have that hooked up since Track and Field does not require it!

John, i'm total NOOB here with very little electrical knowledge : so two SILVER boxes in on the right side of the floor panel is the transformer for the monitor (the bigger silver box) and the smaller silver box is the AC / ground coming from the wall right ?

Great video. Why is an adapter needed though when converting from a game with a power supply and a linear power supply to a new switching power supply? Can't I just open up the linear power supply and connect those wires to the appropriate lugs on the new switching power supply?

You just helped me again! After tracing through a galaxian cab I just picked up with the multimeter, I found the problem: A blown fuse! It's a 125V Buss MDL-2 fuse, Should I replace it with an exact copy ordered online or can I use some other kind of fuse?

The power supply can cause games to do all sorts of problems, I always check the voltage on PSU 1st. I remember one time it was causing my Vs. SMB to run in slow mode just being off a couple of volts.

I always thought this switching power supplies look like PC-PSU's? So the there are switching ones that looks like the old ones and directly bolt in?
@Johnsarcade
@Johnsarcade 8 лет назад
+Hirthirthirt yes. The typical ones used in older games are still being made like the one shown in this video. You can also use PC style.

+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Could you do a video how to prepare an ATX-PSU for the use in an arcade game? I think people are interested in this. Are the direct replacement-switching-PSU's shown in this video chinese products? If so I rather would go with an ATX-style PSU's.

I replaced my power supply on my offroad challenge and the new one failed immediately The game gives a loud boop steering wheel moves for a split second and then nothing except some humming from speakers. Any idea what could cause this?

At 17:45 you have a loose blue wire nearly under the power supply, I presume you know that though. Not sure where the wire came from because you hadn't started to take the remaining wires off the old supply yet.

Never a switch mode PSU is more reliable than a linear. Linear PSUs are always, even with many years on top of them, from far the most reliable PSUs in every equipment possible. The only thing is that they occupy more physical space but they are very superior quality too and have less components to fail. It's basically a transformer, rectifier capacitors and maybe some regulaters and one or 2 power transistors and some pot to fine tune voltages. So, you said that switching PSUs are more reliable and you are a little bit wrong. It's not a metter of opinion. It's facts.
