Related quote: "Never work for other people...always, always remember that the reason that you initially started working was that there was something inside yourself that you felt, that if you could manifest it in some way, you would understand more about yourself and how you co-exist with the rest of society... And the other thing I would say is that if you feel safe in the area that you're working in, you're not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you're capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth and when you don't feel that you're feet are quite touching the bottom, you're just about in the right place to do something exciting." - David Bowie

@@edscmidt5193 what can I say? to each his own. It's like arguing which TV series is better. JP's narrative about meaning of life and depression/distress is very close to the main theme of 'House M.D.' And it is one of my favorite TV shows. Although I came out of depression on my own, it would be much easier if I'd have watched it sooner. Because I came to the same conclusions that were in the show, but through tough practical personal experience. But I don't get 'Game of Thrones', and don't like it. Despite millions of fans and a huge hype. Although I watched the very first episode and the last one. Of course, can't say it's stupid. Actually it has maybe the same idea as JP's or House's, but from different angle

"Even the innocent must be sacriced to the highest cause". Not sure if the last word is right (couldn't quite hear it), but the gist is correct. This did not sit well with me at all because I feel this thinking might be the very root the many mass murders and suffering humans have encountered in history. The same thought which went through the minds of those in power who decided it was okay to force us to wear masks, stay at home, be vaccinated, and with terrible consequences if we did not bend for the so-called greater good. Prior to saying this, Peterson did mention the word voluntary, but that did not follow on in this sentence and he is very careful with every word he uses. I wish he could at least clarify the quote. It was just left hanging. Very strange Lex was just fine with it, did say "Whoa!".
@Doors_of_janua
@Doors_of_janua 2 года назад
Why speak of mass murders and not little ants or blades of grass or small seeds being murdered. You see, the mind can not grasp to majesty of life and death. It put’s everything in boxes. But the truth is. Even the innocent must be sacrificed to the highest good. So what is the highest good? Evolution.

To me it feels like desperately seeking for a reason not to just right-off humans as a lost cause. I've been there myself, and even thinking this sort of question is such a load of anxiety that no one really needs. We humans do many wonderful things like, create great works of art, or love with a passion and intensity that defines description. But we also do terrible, evil and immoral things as well, like waging war on an entire country of innocent victims under false pretenses, killing millions and displacing still more millions. We can be incredibly callous, selfish, and self-centered beings, and this impulse to be so doggedly selfish is probably the closest thing to the "root cause" of so much evil done by humans.

in another video he talks about voluntary exposure in a fascinating way and uses the example of people who are scared of spiders. if you chuck them in a bath full of spiders you're going to freak them out and possibly make their phobia even worse. but if first you see if they can look at a picture of a spider for a few seconds. and then increase the time, and then show them a real spider in a box the other side of the room. that step by step, measured, voluntary exposure can cure a phobia of spiders and they'll be holding tarantulas in no time

@@oskarnoak391 I’ve thought about this a lot as well and where I stand currently is kind of in the middle. I personally don’t think it’s a great idea to fully commit to one “philosophy” but I think it’s instead better to make use of many. I think Watts has valid ideas for life and so does Peterson. However, I would say taking a bit more of a balanced approach is better. I have taken a lot of advice from Peterson about finding meaning and sort of just day to day things to do to improve how you feel but also will always maintain the Watts ideas of looking at the absolute beauty of life and taking every moment, trying to enjoy this ride. Also I highly recommend doing things that are difficult/ new but will in the long run make you a better person, just keep some comfort in your life too don’t go all the way off the map.
