When I was learning English, I used to watch a video repeatedly for many days. That could help me to have all those words and structures in my long term memory. So pick up a video and then watch it every day for a week. That could be boring but the result is gonna be wonderful.

If you want to learn a language efficiently, then you need to give that language life. Every word needs to connect to sounds, images, senses, tastes, and emotions. Every bit of grammar can’t be some kind of abstract grammatical quote, needs to be something that can help you tell your story. 5-Discipline, you have to know before learning a new language 1. Make learning fun. 2. Make lots of mistakes and learn from them. 3. Don’t compare yourself with other learners. 4. Be Patient (Don’t say when I learn the language like a native, make it step by step). 5. Live with this language. Make a suitable method for you, there’re thousands of methods to learn a language choose a fun method. 5-Discipline, you have to practice the language every single day 1. Listen at least for 30 minutes. 2. Read a novel or news or anything you are interested in for 30 minutes. 3. Speak with yourself or a partner if you have, discuss different topics, or talk about what happened in your day before you go to sleep. 4. Learn 5 new words or sentences and repeat them everyday day, and use them in your conversations. 5. Write your personal journal every day ‘’If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his language, that goes to his heart.” Nelson Mandela Remind yourself about the benefits of learning this language, That will motivate you. Read this quote load every day ‘’Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever.’’ Don’t focus on yourself, focus on the result that you want to achieve. English is not an art to be mastered, English is just a tool to use to get results.

I tried the way of thinking of English before sleeping ,I swear I got a dream in English 😹😹

These are what I've been telling my friends who want to improve their English to do. Especially Step 4, I use it when I learn Japanese, German and Spanish. I literally change everything in my life into the language which I'm learning. Including Computer OS, smart phone OS (having an iPhone is so convenient doing this), and I even switched all my video games' languages settings.

Step 4 is a thing I've been doing for a long time. I have every social media in English and I can say I improved a lot by that. I used to watch tiktok and read comments in English. I learn so many new words that I can use in daily conversations

My personal tips: 1- Start to read more in English. Everyday read texts that are relevant and interesting for you. Use the internet to find nice articles. 2- Read them without translating a single word on you head. Only worry about the pronunciation. The main porpouse is to learn new words and strength the ones you've already know. If you notice that you're translating in your head, stop translating and start again. This will also help you start thinking in English. 3- After you've already read the text. Get the words that you don't know in a list and look for them in a English-English dictionary. If you are a beginner it's ok to use an Eglish-(your language) dictionary, but when you become a intermediate student, use only English-English dictionary. 4- This exercise will help you to thinking in English and your reading speed and comprehension will increase a lot. This will also help you with listening, that's why you need to learn the correct words pronunciation, because once you hear that word you'll get it. 5- Start to watch RU-vid videos in English. Use subtitles IN ENGLISH until you get more advanced and confident to watch videos without them. 6- Watch videos about issues that are relevant and interesting for you and when you're listening the words don't worry about their meaning, focus on the pronunciation only. You gonna learn a lots of words throughout the context. 7-Combine reading texts and watch videos about the same subject in English. You gonna learn a lots of vocabulary and your reading, speaking, thinking, listening and comprehension skills will level up amazingly. And always remember about to not translating in your head. Just learn the words how they are pronounced and look for the meanings you don't know using an English-English dictionary. A nice online English-English dictionary is vocabulary.com, they have easy explanations with examples and you can also hear how the words are pronounced by a native speaker.

I've been studying English for 11 years in school, and I don't even remember when I started thinking in English. It just always occured to me as natural.

I did all of these steps like 3 years ago. I promise you IT WORKED! Now I think in English and I feel more fluent. Another thing I do is to copy phrases from movies or tv shows that helps me to get expressions and then sound more natural in conversations

I've realised that I did all of those things in my life. Started just like Rachel describes, with small things, and then immerse myself in English more and more and more. Now I'm pretty fluent. Taking my IELTS exam in 2 days, fingers crossed 🤞

I actually made this a goal for 2021

To improve my active vocabulary I started to write essays in English. But it was very difficult to find topics to write about. Trying to find a solution I started to retell the plot of my favorite book. And it worked very well! There was not a need to figure out what to write about by myself, and I was able to just focus on finding write words in my passive vocabulary and using it to gradually transfer it in an active one. If someone has similar problem, you can try this method, it’s very effective🙂

I've been listening to an audiobook of a novel in English before bed, and it does improve my English

I use my smartphone in English, my computer is in English, I play games in English, watch movies and videos in English, sometimes I talk with myself in English too, but when it comes to speak or writing, I just become dumb, I struggle, make bad structures and forgot words. I usually do what I feel that is natural, but I'm not always confident about it. Pronounciation is a thing that I do poorly too, so I'm gonna see how far can I improve watching your videos, I have learned a lot already.

It helped me a lot to listen to stories in English, yes. read them just imagining what they said.

Talk with yourself, it's really helping me to talk more proper in English. I always talked to myself everyday, whenever i did a thing, like cooking or gardening or walking or listening to music and news, almost everything

When I started learning English I would translate each word in the sentence to my native language and I find it difficult because the translation don't match the definition of the word so what happened is I felt overwhelmed and what I did to overcome this is I started writing in English and I avoid translating it to my native language and every time I want to talk on something I would use English instead of my native language and I set a time each day where I can learn a new word to add up to my vocabulary and every time I reflect for my day I speak it in English. Right now at this time, I can say that I improved a lot in my speaking in English and this video helped me a lot. This makes me realize that I'm on the right path in learning English. For those people out there that are also learning English don't give up and always practice and believe in yourself this will take time so be patient and keep going.

Yes you are right, what you've said is true and interesting because if we hear per attention listening the sound step by step, during the practice without translate dialogue in the own mind, you can slowly receive clearer and almost distinguish all that it says. Thanks for this advice 👍👍😉

British speakers are the most native speakers, so saying "computer" pronouncing the sound [t] clearly is the best way to pronounce it, to my mind

I am already trying to start doing these things everyday. I am learning English in order for me to land a job. The interviewer told me that I have grammar lapses and suggested I watch more English movies or series or speak English conversationally. I realized that maybe she is right. I do know how to speak in English but admittedly, my English is not that good for it is only my second language. I know learning English will take time. However, I will try my best to speak English so that the next time I apply, I will have no problems speaking English fluently.

Hi Rachel. Most of these ideas, I used to do them when I was learning English without even realizing, you know. Like switching the language on my phone (never switched it back and still have it in English since then), talking to myself in my head or writing down American English idioms and collocations from subtitles or downloading movie scripts from movies that I enjoyed watching. In fact, when you really enjoy learning a new language, you eagerly find different ways to practice. And if we add up time to that thing, there's no way that progress cannot occur. By the way, you look pretty much and sound like a lady who was my boss in NC and who I was lucky to meet at work and inspired me to gain more fluency. I follow you from a long time ago. Reading and watching videos and movies in english were 2 things that really helped me to stop translating. At first, I used think: "I can't get anything" and this thought was responsible for making me give up and translate, but once I decided to pretend I was understanding everything, I started to really understand and actually learn new words, phrasal verbs, etc.

Hello dear Rachel, I know that there are as many ways of learning a language as the number of people trying to learn a new language. My personal view to a language is that the language learning is a process or better to say a set of experiments in which you try out a learning method for yourself. You are a sample. Personally, I tried out different methods until I found my way of learning English that worked out for me and that was chunks of the language that express different ideas, not words. Not only did I try to focus on chunks, I also tried to focus how they sound when native speakers say those chunks. I found out that the native speakers do not learn vocabularies, they learn chunks associated with a melody that signals a unique idea. Therefore, the native speakers are much more quick to understand the others speech, even if they talk with a mouth full of something they are eating, because the unique melody that they still can recognize. Second, they do not learn even vocabularies, when you ask for the meaning of a vocabulary, they search in their mind for the examples they have already learnt and then, they try to figure out the meaning of the word you have asked for. This is the way everybody has learnt their own native language effectively and easily without any grinds. I think that the language teaching is still in its infancy because I have witnessed so many people struggling with learning a new language, only a few has been successful. I believe that there is nothing wrong with these learners who failed, it is just the methods which should be blamed for their failure. To cut short, stop learning using dictionary books (youglish is much better thank you, even if it is indirect and it takes time to figure out the meaning of the word), stop learning memorizing words (memorize the unique rhythmic patterns associated with an idea of chunk), and start learning speaking from the first day you start learning a language, just like the way you have learned your own mother tongue language. You did not start reading to learn you own language. Instead, build a community of the language learners, a medium, where they can share what they have learned by communication, exactly the same way we have developed our own native language. Otherwise, it won't be a recipe for success.

I think talking to ourselves is the best way to improve our thinking and also our speaking.

My English is far from perfect, and I rarely speak out loud. But I often read or watch something in English. The other day I watched a movie in English and then went to bed. In the morning I woke up with thoughts in English and realized this only after a couple of minutes. It was so weird! This is cool. I'm Dutch, born and raised in the Netherlands, by Dutch parents. In school I was taught English, but I didn't pick up much there. One year, I had Dutch and English lessons from the same teacher, and on a scale from 1 to 10, I scored at least 9.5 for Dutch, but never better than a 2 for English. It was embarrassing. Then, when I started working, in some factories I was confronted with a conundrum: many of my co-workers were temps, visiting from English speaking nations around the world... That stimulated me to do better. At some point, I automatically started thinking and dreaming in English. In 1982, I bought my first home computer, and the manual and all other information I could get about it, was in English. If I wanted to know something about my computer, and how to use it effectively, I had to learn in English! This stimulated me even more. In 1992, when I got my first (second-hand) PC, it was a no-brainer to always select English during installation of any programs. This was helpful later, when I got access to the Internet. Most forums and support systems primarily use English, as it is known all over the world. So what's the logical step if you need help? Ask your questions in English, not Dutch... now it was extra helpful that I had always installed all my software in English, wasn't it? So what, do you think, is my primary language with social media like Facebook? When I encounter any English word of phrase that I'm unfamiliar with, I don't immediately think of Google Translate to put it to me in Dutch. No, the first thing I'm likely to do, is to tell Google.com (the English version) to "define: ". Translating to Dutch is hardly ever necessary after that. I'm more likely to ask Google for the English translation of a Dutch word than the other way around. As soon as I had my first DVD-player, I quickly learned that Dutch subtitles are seldom accurate; they use dumb phrases and words, and half of what's said isn't even translated at all. So making sure that every title I bought had English subtitles available, was a no-brainer. Now I watch everything with English audio, and can fall back on English subtitles. The same goes for Netflix. I'm actually annoyed if a show or movie that I want to see, has no English subtitles. Because that forces me to either use Dutch, or do without, entirely. I now have 40+ years of practice hearing and speaking, reading and writing in English behind me. Thinking and dreaming in English is second nature, more likely than doing so in Dutch. While awake, I switch back and forth from English to Dutch without thinking about it. Translating in my head is so 40 years ago! In day-to-day social life, my primary language is Dutch, that may never change. But as soon as I'm home alone, online or offline, I live an English speaking existence. I know that your method works, because without knowing of it, I've done the steps already...
