Basically the spool caps are for the types of spools that have a cut in the plastic to secure the thread tail when the spool is being stored. Threads that feed off the end of such spools could get caught on that notch, so the spool cap would keep that from happening. If your smaller spools don't have any rough edges then the spool caps would be unnecessary.
