How to Throw a Cast Net, Two Best Ways, Easy and Clean Best
Captain Cody shows the two best ways to throw a cast net. The first method is good for throwing, 4 foot, 5 foot, 6 foot, 8 foot, 10 foot, and 12 foot nets. It is easy and clean. The net being thrown in the video as an example is an 8 foot and 4 foot net. The cast net throw is slowed down in slow motion to explain the dynamics of the throw. Captain Cody's Dad and nephew are also shown loading and throwing the cast net. Kids can use either method.
The second way to throw the net works for small cast nets 3 foot, 4 foot, 5 foot and a max of 6 foot. It is called the easy cast net method. This is a similar method used when there is a metal ring just below the horn of the net. The metal ring is not needed though to use the method.
At the end of the videos ballyhoo, and bunker are caught using a cast net. Other types of bait commonly caught are mullet, pilchards, greenbacks, scaled sardines, goggle eyes, pinfish, and cigar minnows. Hopefully this video helps you learn how to throw a cast net. Thanks for watching! If you have any questions, leave a comment below the video. Most of the filming for this videos was done in the Florida Keys.

I've watched dozens of cast net videos and never would have imagined watching a video that is more than 10 minutes, yet here I was watching all 23 minutes because of how great the video was. Awesome instruction and examples of multiple styles of nets. I have multiple of the EZ Throw, and one of the fun things with them is you don't even need the second hand - just spin and whip it out there with your dominant hand, after draping the net over the ring, for pretty easy pancakes. I also have many regular cast nets as well and appreciate the non mouth/shoulder techniques you taught. :)

Hey Cap'n Cody, Really good, maybe the best turorial Ive seen on throwing a cast net. Im having an anoying problem with my 4' net. At short and longer distances, the net in shalow water, has a nicely shaped bottom (closest to me), but the section fartherest from me is bell shaped; At the fartherest part, there is narrow rounded top and is caved in on right and left sides. Its symmetrical. Ive looped this RU-vid vid so I can see details of your throws. Ive tried many many combinations of the setup and throws and my best throws always have the bell shape. Give me some things to try to get the traditional pancake.
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 Месяц назад
Thanks, I am guessing you are using the second method here! I would still suggest pulling back with your left hand while throwing forward with your right hand just like the first method. The motion should cause the net to rotate counter clockwise just a bit. This centripetal force helps get the net to open evenly. You can even twist/rotate your right hand just a bit to make the net rotate in a slight counter clockwise motion. Let me know if that helps.

If you are in deep water trying to catch bigger baits then you need a professional cast net.

Cap'n Cody, Actually I'm working on the first method. I'm 85 and dont have the strength to throw the second method very well. Your idea to rotate my right hand counterclockwise and pulling back with the left hand got rid of the bell shape. Then I started throwing a backward D. I found by trial and error that if I make the two "loads' about level with each other, the net shape became more circular. Think I'm on the right track. Do you have rules of thumb how load sizes left vs right and load levels left vs right affect net shape? If you do please share. BTW If you have any suggestions on how to get started throwing the 4' net with the second method, please share them as well. I like the simplicity of the second method. John
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 Месяц назад
You seem to be on the right track. That is great you are out there catching you own bait at 85! 1/4 to1/3 collected in the left hand would be good with a 4 foot net. With a 4 foot net though I defiantly think the second method is easier. That is what I thought you were using.

The bait at curacao is smart and they start to run as they feel you aproch with boat and if you are walking near the shore you found that they stay more of the day some 14 feed fron shore They demand you to be capable to trow the net 16 geed away to catch some of them. Your first way to hold and trow seems not a way to trow very far Your second module to trow the net at minut 16 is the good far trow method. Yes we did learn from your way of trow. * * F.Y.I.: Known as the "Uncle Thevenow" (Thev-in-oh) method of "dry" casting, it was developed back in the early 1980s by Thevenow Harold DeLaney (1927-2009) of Avon Park, Florida. The technique has only recently become widely known and utilized. Namesake of "Tommy Joseph Thevenow", a 1920/30s pro baseball player, Uncle Thevenow was an imposing blonde figure, quite a character, with a dry sense of humor. He was considered the best bass and snook fisherman in the region. NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY !!!

@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 3 года назад
It is nice to have soft nets that open easy. I find that new nets throw really well just how they come. The fabric softener trick is probably a good way to fix an old stiff net. To be honest though I have not tried. As older nets get damaged from snags and big fish swimming through them they are more difficult to open easily. The fabric softener is something I should try! As many times as I viewed this video and others of yours, I cannot throw this so that it opens up all the way, It sometimes partially opens and sometimes gets tangled. I have viewed and tried this technique of yours over 50 times and it has not once opened up all the way with an 8-foot cast net.
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 Год назад
Well it might just be that then net is still a bit tangled. Once it gets tangled it takes more work to get it 100 percent tangle free. Or if the net is old the net does not open as smoothly. Sometimes getting a new net helps. Throwing a cast net does take lots of practice so you might also just be doing something slightly wrong. Hard to say without watching you throw.

Thank you for replying. I am going to again try it. I think the problem I have is in the throw. I end up with Banana throws and have a problem fully opening the net. This video seems a lot better than the other one that I was following. I have been throwing a 6-foot net successfully with my left hand so changing hands could make the difference in the throw that I am used to on my hip swing and throw.@@CaptainCody7

WOW!!!!! Capt Cody!!!! Following this video I was throwing 80 to 90% open! I am very happy. With small hands that are a bit arthritic, I will have to practice more. Thank you, thank you. I highly recommend your method. I have tried many other videos and methods and you are the best!!!

Let everyone know not to use the Walmart pvc coated leads they sink too slow
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 Год назад
The PVC-coated weights are steel. These work well if you are throwing in shallow water. If you are throwing in deep water for bigger baits, you need a large heavy net that sinks fast. So it depends. Even with a 12-foot net with 1.5 pounds per foot you still need to track the bait down and throw the net the correct way. Large baits are very fast so sometimes you have to push them in shallow or deep so they are not scared from the splash of the net. I hope this helps, good luck catching bait!

Learned this method when I was around 10 years old. Most of my friends put the lead in their mouths. I never liked that method because of the lead and because of whatever you were casting in is now in your mouth. The triple load is an excellent technique for bigger than 8 ft but you get all boogered up after the first cast. I can throw my 10ft net like the video here. Heavy, so make each cast count!

Nice, yeah exactly, tripple load works well to open the net but it makes catching bait a messy chore rather than a fun task. Thanks for watching!

I have tried and tried your method but always end up with the net landed in the water upside down. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong but no clue as to what.😤
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 2 года назад
Sorry to hear that. I bet you will get it if you keep trying. What size net? I would say make sure you are collecting your net with your dominant hand. I use my right hand to hold most of the net and left hand to pull back. Also once it gets tangled it is lots of work to properly untangle it but it has to be untangled to open properly.
@robertsimcox8185
@robertsimcox8185 2 года назад
@@CaptainCody7 I’m using a 7’ net and I’m 6’ 4” tall same as you. You are correct it takes a minute to get the net untangled once it lands upside down🤪

Yeah, it does. Have you ever seen the bunker in NJ. They are not over fished by people with a cast net. The do have some big commercial boat that harvest them in the millions of pounds.

Another incomplete video. Show people what the hand with the net does. That's a movement that nobody talks about
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 Год назад
Sorry if you could not follow. The hand with the net is pulled back to then allow the net to be thrown forward with some force. It is a swinging motion but the net thrown straight forward. The hand has a firm grip on the net and is released once the net starts pulling forward away from the hand.

A wonderful video. Can you provide information on how to see the fish before casting, during the day and at night, please?
@CaptainCody7
@CaptainCody7 5 месяцев назад
That would be a good videos to make. It really comes down to knowing were and when bait is around in your area. Sometimes you have to catch it at first light, other times you can use chum. If you see diving birds the birds are likely on bait, you just have to see what kind of bait. Where are you located and what kind of bait are you trying to catch. In general finding bait in shallow water makes it easier to catch. Just make sure you are not throwing in structure where the cast net will get snagged and tangled.
