I love videos that mix judo and bjj, i practice both and they work great together, nowadays i think it's the most truthful way to practice old school pre Olympic "Kano JuJutsu"
@ricardokerscher
@ricardokerscher 5 лет назад
Kano jujutsu actually never existed. When Jigoro Kano created judo in 1882 he already created it with the name judo. Others called judo jujutsu kano. The brazilian jiu jitsu has very little of the kodokan judo that is what maintains the essence of judo idealized by Kano. Judo in its essence has changed little. What has changed is how to teach because instructors give more emphasis on sports judo than training kata and in-depth judo studies.

This is me getting thrown around by a judo female black belt when I first started judo. Then she proceeded to scarf hold and side control. That was my very first randori and intro to actual grappling. 12 years later and I'll never ever forget that moment.

Just a very small "correction" for the judo guys here: When you reach over to grab the belt, it´s not sumi gaeshi but hikikomi gaeshi,.Sumi gaeshi does NOT involve reaching over your opponent's back to grab the belt. Anyway, very nice video and good explanation, thank you!

You follow into mount or side control in judo as well. The main reason is most of the time this throw is scored wazari (1/2 a score, sort of) and then you win via a pin.
@KathyHubbleNTBFIGHTGEAR
@KathyHubbleNTBFIGHTGEAR 5 лет назад
Yes for sure, and I do ride them over a lot of the time in judo matches too... or even horizontal flip over into Kami-shiho (North/South) - it was kind of for the purpose of exaggerated illustration to differentiate the throw... (also Sumi has so many variations too, as you know... so we could have demo-d a lot more, but these are at least two anyway...) Thanks for pointing that out!

Thank so much for this video. I do this throw quite a bit. I do it a bit different though with the grips and instead of grabbing the belt, which I am going to try, my high grip is rather a gathering of the material at the shoulder. I by no means am at her or your level, but it seems to work right now. Thoughts on this approach?

stephan! decade in freestyle judo here (nidan) and working towards purple currently in bjj. have me out sometime so we can go over other things that she didnt really touch on at the end (particularly about who i wouldnt do this to, or the types of people) freestyle allows for leg grabs, kuchiki taioshi (single leg) and morote gari (double) and kuchiki is one that if theyve got a strong base i wouldnt do this to. if i know the person is a strong wrestler, i wouldnt do this. ive been thrown with a single leg, and morote with this before. it looks really stupid. the person throwing sumi looks like they just flopped... you CAN however, modify this to still work in that situation, but it involes a strong arm drag and wrapping up the partners arms. again, bring my by there! itd be really cool! :P

For bent over opponent : as soon as your opponent grabs your back and you feel it's bad you can go forward hug her and take her down (if you're good enough and can feel it). For the upright one : you can grab his back and control him It's just a matter of who's got who. It depends on how fast you react and your reflex and how good you are Every stance has a counter to it Bent over disadvantage : back grabbed Uprights stance disadvantage : hugged and taken down

Depends on momentum there is a freestyle wrestling throw/reversal that's the same concept without the belt and you just lock your hands around the hips and rolls back. [ bad discpriton sorry] Either way I find judo helpful for gii

Rice bale throw - tawara gaeshi - is the exact counter to those takedowns, works against both kinds. It differs in that you use two handed "ring around belt" hold, similar to double overhook.

ok but demonstration should be the other way, can stephan get under hubble if she's crouched over and do a sumi gaeshi. I'm big and tall if i'm doing bjj even in my weight class the other guy is probably shorter so if he's crouched over maybe i can do a sumi gaeshi or maybe i can't. but thank you for the lesson anyway

These techniques are legit, but one thing I've had issues with is that posture break snap down initiations of judo and bits of bjj. I almost never pull them off other than a sneaky arm drag, and likewise I've been able to stop them mostly. My body just does not 'give' like that and the jedi mind trick stuff is just too readable. I must be missing something, very willing to be wrong on this.
