In this video Sebastian Bentz shares how to throw a One Seam Sinker. He shows us the One Seam Sinker Grip, as well as how to throw it and the philosophy behind it. The One Seam Sinker works really well for Sebastian (as you’ll see in the video) and I think it can be a valuable asset to any aspiring pitcher as it has late downward movement and is on the safer end of the spectrum as far as pitches are concerned. Try out this One Seam Sinker next time you throw and let us know how well it works for you!

This is one of the best and easier pitch to learn, that I've seen. I coach a 10yo team and showed it to a couple of kids who have hard time learning the change-up grip. One of them threw this one-seamer 3 times in a row to the best hitter in our league and fooled him every single time. THANKS!

I've been teaching to he is pitch to my kids for a few years now. I was throwing this for my slider but since I'm more 3/4 it moves more to the side. I try and have the kids think of it as a fastball that has late mocement. As most kids have different releases and grip strength it moves differently for each kid. Sometimes it is more of a vertical drop and other times it is more like a cutter. Good luck and try it out.

It seems these days that every aspiring pitcher who has tommy john surgery comes back stronger than before, almost bionic. Maybe you should consider tommy john for your 8 yo. By the time he gets to little league he should be unhittable, with that kind of pitching arsenal already.

Nice video Coach Madden. Though...there's a slight difference in his mechanics/arm slot (see side by side video), prior in releasing the ball. The difference starts when Sebastian has his leg lift, breaks (4.48) and starts cocking (4.53). With the 4-seam his hand is way much back than when he's throwing the 1-seam sinker. Also his release of the 1-seam sinker is higher/earlier than the 4-seam (4.55).....minor details that only a very very good hitter can pick-up. What I most liked was the difference on the vertical break compared to the 4-seam, also a good pitch to teach kids (age 12-15) to throw instead of the curve ball, less stress on the arm.

I always wonder more about the release, and whether you rotate anything, fingers, wrist or arm, can you talk about the release? It took me a while to understand what creates movement even on fast pitches!
@BG-ef3zg
@BG-ef3zg 3 года назад
Hold it a little bit tighter and a bit farther into the palm. I used to call it my “main curve” as it dropped better than my curveball. I keep my fingers close together, and on the dominant side of the two seam grip. (For me, a lefty, the left seam) you don’t have to go all the way down on the horseshoe, stay in the middle. There should be no release or wrist action different than your 4 seam. Throw about 70-80% velocity of your 4 seam, and it’s a very successful pitch. I’ll subscribe to you, so try to make a video for what you think the grip is and dissect how you would throw it. I’ll comment and try to help you more.

Would this be a good pitch to teach 11-12 year olds since it's the same arm action as a fastball? I know 11-12 old shouldn't learn a curve and I wanted to throw something in besides a 4 seam and change-up so I was looking at this pitch

Can batters pick up the spin on this after a while?
@frankpalancio8471
@frankpalancio8471 3 года назад
There's different types of 4 seamers... he's talking about a 'wide' 4 seamer where you put your fingers across the widest part of the seams. When I throw a wide 4 seamer I get a lot of downward movement so I use that grip for my sinker. I use a 'narrow' 4 seamer for my straight pitch.

@fredmertz2175
@fredmertz2175 4 года назад
I know the arm action and spin are different for the 1 seam versus a curve, but isn't the ball movement very similar to a 12-6 curve ball? Also higher velocity than curve.
@YouGoPro
@YouGoPro 4 года назад
Fred Mertz No the one seamer has backspin, a curveball has forward spin. If you are talking about the movement of the pitch then yes I guess you could say that. But I think a good Sinker beats a good curveball. But that’s just my opinion.
@fredmertz2175
@fredmertz2175 4 года назад
In my mind, at least, I agree with you that a sinker should be better than a curve. My pitching coach wants the CB velocity no more than 15% below the velocity of the 4-seam FB. At my current age (15), it is hard to reach that consistently. Our 2-seam FB and sinker is only about 2-3 mph (low 70's) below the velocity of the 4-seam FB (mid-70's), so I expect the velocity of a 1-seam pitch to be close to the velocity of the 2-seam pitches, for us at least. And I have to pronate the 2-seam sinker to get much movement of the pitch (down and slight arm-side movement). So, the 1-seam pitch should be faster than my curve, about as fast as my 2-seam pitches, a bit easier on my arm and much more consistent than my curve. All, IMHO, of course.

Sensation also broke his hands before he went forward, really well. He stayed back, got loaded on his backside, not drifting forward and walking away from his arm, which allows his arm to get up, so he’s on top of the ball and throwing down hill. I would have liked to see his 1 seam change up. Other topics: Hip explosion(Dak Prescott drill) Bent landing leg vs stiff and catapult Short armers that drift forward and throw in the 100’s, middle relief vs starters who stay back and give their arms time to get up. Contrasting their longevity and different arm injuries. What makes a knuckle curve ball different What made Barry Zito’s curve ball so good. What happens to sinker/ slider pitchers Famous spit-ballers Why some great hitters can hit a hanging slider, Mike Schmidt Drop and drive pitchers keeping your back knee down and driving towards the plate vs back leg coming around Getting underneath the ball, dropping the elbow and ball taking off Flying open and how to stay closed Not coming around the ball but driving through it How umpires call a game, gotta throw to their zone, don’t show up the umpire How to teach a kid to step and throw, and other basics for Little Leaguers
