This is an around the waist bowline knot. It’s good for emergency repelling or to make a big loop for your bowline knot. It’s commonly used by firefighters in the fire service, military, scouts, and outdoorsman. It’s a good survival knot to know how to tie in an emergency situation.

Skilled Mariners use two handed slap technique by slapping the end real hard on the standing part and forming the rabbit hole Or a Flying Bowline.

This could prove to be dangerous. If you slipped off a cliff or overboard and someone through a line to you (and the boat was under gunfire 😳) You could dislocate your wrist. Mariners are taught to never put your hands through bends twists loops etc. A better choice for your own waist is a Midshipman's Hitch. A Midshipman's can be tied under load and is also untieable after heavy load. Also a Bowline can become loose if not under constant load of super taughted. A better better choice than a Bowline is an Eakimo Bowline. An Eskimo Bowline does not loosen and is also easy to untie. If however you are not confident in tying an Eskimo Bowline then you should you should finish it with a couple half hitches to safer

Always use a safety knot. I think I mentioned that. I might have missed it. That’s some good information. This is just one opinion of many

Super cool! The chances of remembering it in an emergency are probably ZERO.

You have to practice it a lot where you can do it without thinking about it

Sorry, what I mean is a better choice is a Midshipman's Hitch also known as a Tautline hitch for tying around yourself. A Bowline is very hard to tie under load like if you slipped off a cliff while still holding the rope line or if you fell off a boat and your buddy threw you a line behind the boat and you grabbed it (while the boat is for example needing to get a fast getaway). A Midshipman's Hitch can be tied under load and is easy to untie after a heavy load. A bowline is good because it's fast to tie around someone else. Also a forgotten fact about the Bowline is that it can come loose especially with modern rope material. So it's good to finish with a couple or more Half-hutches. Or even a better choice is a Eskimo Bowline which does not loosen.

@@user-rr1le3zp3k that’s why we always add a safety knot at the end to prevent it from coming loose. As mentioned. But yeah tons of other options out there. If I need to bail out window it will hold me in place until a ladder truck can swing over and pick me up. I’m sure there is a better option out there but this is the one I’m comfortable with and know from muscle memory. And to be honest if I’m ever in this situation the likelihood of surviving is not good anyways. This is just what I’ve been taught so I thought I would share.

Maybe you could learn it then educate other firemen in the tying and the use of the Midshipman's. It's what is taught in the military
