You don’t lock the fg by doing an half hitch with the fc, it’s pointless (as the leader won’t slip at that point) , doesn’t lock the knot , and also creates a useless thicker part in the knot that isn’t ideal when the knot passes through the guides. To lock the knot you have to do an half hitch with the tag end of the braid going around the leader and the main line
Thanks, yes the tool is a little small but fits in the hand ok, with the amount of times I need to tie an FG knot it works out well and quick and easy to use if needed when out fishing.
Thanks for the link to the video, it is a good method too, when learning how to tie the FG knot I watched many videos on different methods and ways to tie it, unfortunately I don't have enough dexterity in my fingers, the Knot assist tool works well for me especially when I need to tie an FG knot quickly in the boat, thanks again for your comment.
@@ibcoutdoors have you played around with melting the tag end of the leader instead of tying a knot in it. i've been doing this exact same method except that been working great for me.
@arcticicemonkey, I looked at melting the tag end of the leader but it doesn't leave a smooth end, this is why I use the Rizzuto finish against the tag end of the leader, this prevents the FG knot from slipping off and creates a smooth finish, I don't use a knot but a half hitch of the leader tag end when tying the FG knot. One thing I have noticed when researching the FG knot, there are so many ways to tie it.
What was shown is pretty standard. I tie mine in exactly the same way as the video, except I don't melt the braid tag end. I was casting this morning with ultralight gear (i.e. tiny rod guides) and smooth as butter.
