Our fly-tying Expo series continues with a legend, the late Bill Heckle. One of the Federation of fly fisherman's Buszek award winners. For over 50 years, Bill has tied flies worldwide at fly-tying fares and Expos. We're lucky to have this footage from Eastern Idaho fly-tying fair. You do not want to miss an intriguing Tent Wing Caddis pattern from the fly-tying fair in 2009 tying theater-an incredible live tying demonstration with creative designs and unbelievably effective for matching any Mayfly hatches. Join us for a magical fly-tying session that you will enjoy. Fantastic interaction and commentary with the late Bill Heckel

You know years ago I had heard of making caddis wings out of tape but this is the first time I’ve seen someone actually do it. Thanks for posting Jack as I plan on making a few of these. Pretty good immitation of a caddis. That wing is spot on.

The Scotch® Tear-By-Hand Mailing Packaging Tape seems to be out of stock everywhere. Can't seem to find anyone selling it.

That was fascinating. Thank you for posting this. I have heard or read of using tape for caddis or other wings over the years but somehow just didn’t feel comfortable using it. Instead I glued the wing with Dave’s Flexament, & shaped it similar to the way Mr. Heckle did here. The other particularly interesting part of the presentation was Mr. Heckle’s dubbing process - waxing, touch dubbing, then spinning the thread/dubbing combination before applying them to the hook. His explanation of the how & why he uses that method was really clear, & helpful. Question for you Jack: If you needed to tie a large batch of tent wing caddis dries, would you use this tape backed method for the wing or would you use another method? I’m going to be tying them for my local Healing Waters chapter but can no long fish myself to test what I tie (other than the glass of water test) & want to be sure they will work. I know the Flexament will work but the tape backing method looks faster. Thanks again for posting this series & this video. I learn something new from each one.
