A productive Intruder Fly for fly fishing for steelhead. Follow along with this fly tying tutorial that shows how intruder flies are tied and the special techniques for better fishing flies.
This style is what I referee to as an "Over the Top" intruder - an intruder with a defined top and bottom (rather than tied in the round) and a heavy line of flash on the top. They color combination has worked well for Great Lakes Steelhead as a swung fly on switch and spey rods as a baitfish imitation.
Materials in order of application
Partridge 35mm wading ton shank
Partridge Z4 intruder hook
Ice dub - Green and UV pearl
grizzly flashabou
Ostrich
Schlappen
Lagartun French flat braid
Ice dub
Arctic fox
mirage Flash
Ostrich

Great intruder pattern. Fantastic teaching here with pointers on tying in materials efficiently and attention to the way they contribute to how the fly swims. Great way to tie in ostrich. Thanks!

Great looking fly pattern and great info on how and why you do things. Just one question..... Have you tried " blending" ostrich and peacock feathers for these flies???
@KevinHospodar
@KevinHospodar Год назад
Thanks. Personally I haven't liked the ostrich as an overwing. I've tried some of the dyed and UV treated, but I find it doesn't have enough movement. I have used it in the rear station on the sides and think it looks OK

Great job! Have you ever tried using a long hook with the hook part removed as your shank for these flies. The price of shanks are too high for my budget.
@KevinHospodar
@KevinHospodar Год назад
Yes. You can cut a long shank hook… problem is that the cut shanks are very light in weight and finding a hook large enough to have a long enough straight shank before the bend. There are also people who bend their own shanks from bulk material…. Not sure on the specifics

Excellent job on your video … you’re using my kind of materials … however I don’t like your choice of colors … I Think … You’ve over thought your color choices … I like how you’ve explained on how to distribute materials like the keel 👍

thanks Don - curious as to what color choices you didn't like? The black over UV Chartreuse has always been super productive for me.

Do you find this pattern works best certain times of the season (early fall, winter or spring) or is it more any all year round pattern, and you fish it when water conditions permit?
@KevinHospodar
@KevinHospodar Месяц назад
With a large fly like this, I don’t find it effective in low and clear with stale fish. I’ll fish it any time of the year, just maybe an adjustment on color. I tie a pink/orange for mid winter to grab attention
