How to Tie Dye Heart 

Just finished teaching a vacation Bible school class of high schoolers to do this. They had a ball and did a terrific job. Thank you for the instructions. We used a tie-dye kit from Hobby Lobby that had 12 different color dyes, gloves, rubber bands and a plastic sheet for spills.

Most amazing.I just wondred HOW you would get the heart to show up. I really enjoyed watching your video tutorial. Very well explained and easy to follow step by step instructions. totallly make it! i did for chemistry and it was super awesome all my friends liked it and it turned our super cool, just make sure you follow the tutorial step by step and its super easy

@tinac04 yeah the earliest you should wash the shirt is after 6 hours. if you wash it before 6 hours the color could fade because it didnt have enough time to react with the fabric.

@xian67 you want the cotton silk and other plant fibers tab on the side. thats best if your going to tie dye alot. if your just tie dying a shirt here and there your probably better off just getting tulip bottles from your local craft store

I am in love with this design!! I have a summer project to use a plain white t-shirt and decorate it to show my personality, I was thinking of doing a rainbow heart on the area covering my heart/ chest but I wanted to do a smaller design covering only a small section, would it bleed outwards a lot and if I were to do the smaller design I am guessing I just fold the t-shirt more to the right side to get a symetrical heart on one side? @xian67 you mix the soda ash with water in a bucket then you soak the shirt in the soda ash water before you do anything. then you ring it out fold it then dye it

What brand of dye do you prefer to use?

@alonif92 i was it in cold water in a washing machine. but you can use a sink or a hose it doesnt matter.

Would I be able to make a heart design on front only? If so, then how do I arrange the remainder of fabric? Similar to above, with random elastics? Small t-shirt, size 6/8 for my 5 yr. old grandson.. Thanks for your help..love your videos!

SO going to try this but i dont know if its such a great beginner idea or if i should just start with the classic spiral tye dye...

You can wear normal latex gloves to prevent staining of the hands. The dye isn't toxic, but will stain your hands for several days. Not a big deal if you don't mind having colorful hands for a few days.

Dude i fricken love your hat

I used the tulip resist on back of shirt first, then after it sat and dried overnight we soaked in soda ash.next step i dyed in the dye (using tulip brand dye). after the shirts sat 24 hours I rinsed in cold water as you stated. Next step the resist states wash in Hot water.which is what I did next.My shirts kept loosing color more and more . Bye the time I washed in Hot water they had very little dye left. What did I do wrong? I also did !9 shirts that were 50/50polyester and cotton

does this technique go for any design you want to do? thats so cool!

if you fold it in fourths you will get a normal heart and an upside down heart. if you want multiple hearts you can draw one more on the chest and then another one below it then just fold them both how you normaly would

instead of applying the dye from a bottle if you want one full colour you can boil water and put the dye in and pace the folded t shirt in the boiled dye

@VengeanceMW2 i use 2 tsp per 8 oz of water. i use 16 oz bottles so i use 4 tsp per bottle
