I have used washing soda (basically the same thing as soda ash) and have had great results. I have heard of people using Borax and baking soda as well. I always have both on hand since I make homemade laundry soap.
@eescapethefate they give a a jar of powder that you mix with water to make the dye. use 2 tsp of powder per 8 oz of water. you only get soda ash if you order soda ash. if you want to save alot of money on soda ash go to a pool supply store and buy sodium carbonate( its a ph increaser/decreaser for pools). it works the same and you get can get a 20 lb bucket for like 25 bucks
@SuperCrazyus soaking it in soda ash is actually the most important step. the soda ash is what absorbs the dye. with out the soda ash the dye wont absorb into the shirt correctly and you will have a lot of white and almost no color.
I emailed the company where you buy your dye a few days ago and they have yet to reply so I thought I'd ask you. When ordering from them what exactly do you get? Just the dye and soda ash? And lastly, how much water do you use when mixing the dye in one of the bottles?
Can we simply add more sections to add more colors, or should I draw another line with a washable marker? I noticed that the first shirt has an extra color and I'm doing a mumu (for the maternity ward, hehe), so it'll be a lot longer.
