Do you have any suggestions or tips for how best to accomplish this on a very large piece, such as a twin sheet sized wall hanging?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 7 лет назад
You can create wood or plastic pieces that you clamp into place - like giant forceps. For example, the curved section of large plastic clothing hangers and c-clamps can be used.

Something I've found useful, before clamping down, add a zip tie through the handles. Clamp down and tighten the ziptie. Helps with popping off (can cause injury as they go flying)

I'm interested in seeing if there's any suggestions for something that can be used as an alternative to the forceps? Since forceps are not something people usually have on hand and if they do, it's more unlikely they'd own several pairs, so any item that is suggested should ideally be something inexpensive that's commonly found in most households or regularly sold at popular stores, such as Walmart or Michael's.as an alternative for
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 лет назад
There really isn't a good alternative that: won't stain, will hold up under the pressure, and is readily available. You can use c-clamps and metal coat hangers that are cut/formed; but, that's going to rust/stain the fabric. You can use c-clamps and plastic coat hangers or wooden forms cut to size; but, stainless steel forceps are less expensive than quality c-clamps and wooden forms would require other equipment (scroll saw, hardwood & poly to protect it from the water, etc.) to create the wood forms. There are several eBay/Amazon sellers that offer stainless steel forceps for less than $5/ea and have discounts if you purchase them in 12 count sets. I've had very good experiences with edontomed on eBay and they have 8" curved forceps in single quantities for less than $4/ea and less than $30 for a set of 10. I know Hobby Lobby and Michael's both carry forceps as well; but, they're 5x the price of Amazon/eBay.

This design is beautiful!! I purchased 12"forceps and tried them on a piece of 21" square satin silk, but they did not close tightly enough to create the desired resist. Do you think smaller forceps will close tightly enough to create a better resist?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 лет назад
While I haven't had an issue, I know many people coat the tips of their forceps with Plasti-Dip to make sure they can get a very tight grip (with no serration pattern). Silk can be troublesome at times, as well. You can't always keep the dye from bonding - even in a tightly tied area.

You will not be able to do this design with rubber bands or sinew. If you are unable to find hemostats, you can do the design with c-clamps and heavy gauge wire (or wood forms) that are molded into the proper shape.

I'm assuming you mean anything in place of the hemostats? If so, you can either form pieces of wood, heavy gauge wire, use parts of plastic hangers, or similar items with c-clamps to hold pressure in the correct places. But, hemostats are *much* easier to work with.

@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 7 лет назад
The hemostats in this video are 8". I prefer to use a single size on each piece of work to keep consistency in the final design. Be sure you go with a good quality stainless steel so that you don't end up with rust stains on your final design.

I purchased the hemostats I use in the videos from a medical supply store - so that I know they are made from a quality stainless steel that will not stain/rust/corrode. If you opt to go with an unknown quality, you could buy a single hemostat to "torture test" in dye/soda ash/water to see how it fairs before buying a full set to use on your shirts.

Can i do this design with a t-shirt
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 7 лет назад
Yes, you can use this pattern on t-shirts. You would need to tie the lotus pattern into only a single side of the shirt (typically the front) and create a different pattern for the other side. The least time-intensive would be to create a lotus on the front and scrunch everything else to create an organic pattern that flows around the lotus and throughout the back. Upcoming videos will include a front lotus/back other design as well as other 2-sided techniques.

Katie, as of this writing, they've got a set of 10 on Amazon for only $13 if you're in the U.S. Some sell for around $3 each, but you can also find larger sets that are a bit more expensive (of course), 2-packs, etc. It all depends on how much you're able to spend, but 10 of them for $13 is only $1.30 each so it's a bit cheaper to do that specific set. Just search "locking forceps" and - at least right now - that set is the 8th or 9th item down on the page.

Some patterns require more than rubber bands or sinew. It would be impossible to produce this design without using some type of clamping system due to the angles involved. For larger versions of this pattern, you can use wire/plastic/wood formed into the proper shape and c-clamps; but, for a pattern of this size, the perfect solution is a set of hemostats. You can find them on ebay, Amazon, and your local Harbor Freight -- for as little as $1.50/ea.

Wonderful! Can we use thread tying in stead of those clamps?

Not for this pattern. Clamps are necessary to re-create this pattern.

eBay, Amazon, or a medical supply store. I believe the name of the seller I buy from on eBay is odontomed1.

Sodium Carbonate. You can find it in most grocery stores in the laundry soap isle as "Arm & Hammer Laundry Booster/Super Washing Soda" in a bright yellow and red 3 pound box. That box will last a home dyer a very long time.

Yes, for this design you need to use curved hemostats.

Why couldn't he use rubber bands
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 3 года назад
The pattern wouldn't be the same with rubber bands versus the forceps.
