MIG wire..... Pull out 1 metre at a time. Loop an end. Put in the power drill chuck. Vice grip the other end. Run at a slow pace while pulling outwards until the wire snaps at the chuck. This leaves the wire straight as an arrow and can then be snipped to 300 mm lengths. I also use champagne or wine bottle corks on then ends of any wire just for easier handling and they'll also easily arc down to the cork comfortably. You know just what its like trying to pick up a length of wire from a bench top when you've got gloves on don't you?

Excellent Video - Well Done Sir ! .. Like the fact about why to use the right Tungsten , I personally only use a low volume of Gas.. 8 LPM on a 5 or 6 Cup with a mixer inside , High Current , Low Base with Pulse.. and thats for as little as 0.4mm Stainless - works a treat.. But yeah this is one of the better videos out there so thanks for putting this together for many to watch and refer back to.. and you didn't speak to fast and rush it !! . AAA+++

anyone else cringe when they saw that wobbly tungsten sharpening?

I'm not a pro welder and I'm pretty crap at it. But that was some pretty clumsy sharpening. Not being a pro, I can afford to take my time with it, so I put the tungsten in my cordless drill and just get it rotating pretty slow before I apply it to the grinding wheel. Works perfect for me.

@@richardpavey1687 I came up with a way that combines your drill-chucking with a back-to-back pair of diamond "lapidary" wheels mounted on my 6 inch bench grinder. I rough the tip out using the 180 grit diamond wheel, and then smooth it to the point I want (whatever that might be) using the 1000 grit diamond wheel. It's fast as stink and I reserve the wheel (2 discs back-to-back = 1 wheel, in my books) for electrode grinding only. The other wheel on my grinder is a normal coarse grindstone wheel for lawnmower blades, angle iron and such. I sweep the tip of the electrode back and forth across the discs to keep wear reasonably even and I'm super happy with the result. The only crappy thing is that I had to jerry-rig a bushing to get the discs well-held on the arbour. They're really thin. Just search for "6-inch Grit 800 Diamond Coated Flat Lap Wheel Grinding Disc" on Amazon. Loads of them will pop up.

Exactly what I do, Cordless drill and sharpen on bench belt sander. Works perfect for my non expert abilities.

One of the best videos I have seen on RU-vid re body work thickness metal tig . Most go the easy route with thick steel.

For tacking I use a blunted 'trode. When I melt the tacks together I use a pointed.

Don't heat up your tungsten to red hot when grinding it to avoid contamination.

He tells you to keep the metal clean but he doesn't do it himself XD. Just look at 4:53 the sparks are either burning filth or burnt metal after angle grinder cuts ( may also be zinc coating since its a car fender it's fumes are toxic btw ). And my man why are these tack welds so freaking black ???? Also he does not show the finished weld so probably not much to look at. I can tell because even after grinding there are overheated spots and just straight up melted sides. My man you could use a bit of your own advice wich is actually good.

Trev's Blog shows a way you can use mig wire, and it works a treat. One end on the vise the other on a drill and twist.

Did i hear to use a stainless steel filler rod? I am totally new to TIG welding and I did not know that you can use a stainless steel filler rod for non alloyed steel (is it right?) Cheers for the nice video!!

awesome helpful vid, I'm in the process of TIG welding some patches in my car, but I'm using a cheap DC inverter TIG welder, so how many amps is a ballpark figure? I'll be using a 1.6mm gold tungsten electrode and 0.9mm MIG wire as filler.

I have been tig welding car panels for a few years now I am also tig brazing with silicon bronze rods on some panels. This is so easy it’s like oxy but with less distortion.

Acetone, stainless steel brush, scotch Brite scrubbie... depends. Just have to keep the surface as clear from impurities as possible.
