Whats up guys!? Today we are jumping right into the topic of How to TIG WELD Stainless steel tube and I'll be offering lots of tips and tricks regarding stainless tube welds in the Automotive fabrication world.
We Will Be Briefly Touching Down On:
-Stainless Steel material Prep
-Stainless Steel Fit up
-Tig Tack Placement for Aesthetic Welds
-Tig Cup size on different diameter Stainless Tube
-Back purging
-Tig Weld Tie-ins
-Tig Welding Filler Rod Size
-Tig Welding Amperage Settings
-Travel Speed
-Tungsten Prep and grind angle
I have a dedicated video on "How to prep stainless Steel Tube" as well as "How to Back Purge Stainless Steel Tube" that I will link in the description as well as cards in the video!
Tig Welding Stainless Exhausts, Downpipes, Dump tubes, Turbo Kits.. or anything automotive fabrication wise is a true art form when you break it down and try and turn out the BEST part that you can. At the end of the day we are all craftsman just trying to advance ourselves in this industry and learn everything we can to make our lives better and sharpen our skills.
Everything from Tig welding cups from Michael Furick @Mfurick to the Silicon Purge plugs that I use from Brad Harmer @Tigaestheics assist in giving me the most potential to produce a high quality purged stainless steel TIG weld that will last a lifetime without failing.
Getting cool looking colors when Tig welding is definitely not for every industry and it has its place so please don't get offended if you are doing Xray aerospace welding work. I have done Aerospace welding work and can truly appreciate the precise process behind it.
Tig / Gtaw welding stainless steel tube is an art form and you can be as lazy or picky about the quality as you want.. If you want quality stainless steel TIG welds you're going to have to put in the prep work and make it happen. Set yourself up with the right tools for the job and you can make anything you want come to life.
Tommy @FDRFAB has the best Stainless steel material that I have welded to date and if you are looking for Automotive Fabrication material go check out his website!

Well in all fairness there's many more times mig welding aluminized tubing is required than stainless tig welding is. Tig is just fancy gas welding that we did in shop class when we were 13 years old so being a hateful tig queen probably isn't necessary. Stick and mig are really what builds the world so just settle down and go do your secret club belly rubs to each other while military welders mig aluminum attack ships together big guy. Oh and I haven't given it a thumbs up or down yet.

You make very valid point about prep. When I have employees prep parts to be welded I usually have to have them clean it up a second time, I tell them that "welding is doing surgery on metal". They often laugh at that but its too true.

I’ve been in the engineering game for 16 years now (all my working life) and I’ve always loved to Tig weld and fab all sorts of stuff. A change of job roles the last 2 years means I’m 99% hands off the tools now so I’ve decided to set up a little workshop on my garage and get back to my roots! I’m loving your content at the moment though mate, making me very excited to get my new Tig plant at home and get my hands dirty again!

Brad, Awesome Video as usual. I have to say this was one of the most in depth Videos on Stainless Tig that I have seen EVER! I mean there is a wealth of information here for the Beginner, and Intermediate Tig Welder, and there are sweet little Tricks in here for even Veterans. I loved that little Propane Torch Trick for getting rid of any leftover Lint or Frbris from your Rag/Paper Towel when wiping down with Acetone. I've never seen that before, and will be implementing that into my Weld Prep Rituals. I've been Fabricating, Welding, Mechanicing, etc for a long time, and I still always learn some new Tip or Trick everytime I watch one of your Videos.

I dont think everyone is cut out for TIG welding. I can Stick, MIG pretty good but my TIG Sucks, specially when I'm trying to build a 304 stainless exhaust system. My welds are embarrassing to look at but get the job done. I think you need to do TIG 40 hrs a week or just be extremely consistent, persistent and have alot of concentration to master stainless tube welding. Kudos in trying to teach us dummies out here.:)

You probably just can't see the puddle. I find that when I do stick and mig that the orange puddle is easy to see with green shades. My eyes can't see shit with tig and green tints. Once I got my optrel crystal 2.0 I could see the puddle. Some other true color hamlets are almost the same. I thought I sucked at first.

@dafreezinfriesen4950
@dafreezinfriesen4950 4 года назад
Awesome video! My only question is you said you use the same belt to sharpen tungsten for carbon and ss. I was taught never ever cross contaminate anything from ss to carbon. Because the ss can rust if contaminated with anything from carbon steel. Ive also seen 1st hand proof of this. Cut some ss pipe with a blade used for carbon and it got wet, few days later it had surface rust.
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 4 года назад
Everything is ground on a 6” wide belt. Left is for Steel, right side is for Stainless steel. A completely dedicated belt for aluminum.. besides, this is automotive fabrication man. I appreciate your precision but cutting SS and mild steel on one blade and leaving deposits is completely different than sharpening tungsten on the same belt. I do pay attention to where I sharpen my tungsten in the belt .. BUT I’ve welded a decent amount of stainless from automotive fabrication, aerospace and sanitary grade tubing and have never had an issue with imbedding or contaminating my part. In my defense, I don’t typically dip tungsten bad. I might just barely touch off on the tip if I’m holding a tight arc but as for absolutely burying my tungsten, I don’t anymore and I can see that being a problem. With that said, I’ve never had any SS rust due to improper technique. Thank you for the very good question! Weld on 🤘🏻

When dabbing the filler , is it when you move and pause or move and pause and dipping before the puddle fills out completely. Without filler (flat plate) , I see a shine edge before it fills, and when it does fill out , I move. I'm guessing when your dipping the filler faster it's the puddle filling in faster.
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 4 года назад
Yeah. Dip your filler.. move forward, let the puddle stabilize (wet out and relax) and then dip it again.. if you have any weird wandering going on it’s typically due to material prep or poor quality material.

or not enough amps or too large filler freezing to fast. You want a freeze line every time you move the torch as a guide for proper amps . So it will be tons of very tight dimes not the wide gnarly aluminum spacing (stainless or mild.) )))) vs ) ) ) )

How do you know what amperage to weld your material at? You say several times to set it 10 amps more than what you want to weld at but if someone doesn't have experience, how are they supposed to know?
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 4 года назад
I showed examples a few times on my amperage on this specific material thickness. Machine is set at 65 amps.. I’m only talking about .0625 or 1.6mm tube in this video. Did you skip through the video? Have a great weekend.
@nathanschmaltz672
@nathanschmaltz672 4 года назад
@@hourglassingenuity103 no I watched the whole video. My point is that there's other thicknesses and that amperage changes with material thickness. How does someone with little to no experience who is trying to learn determine the appropriate amperage to start with?
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 4 года назад
Nathan Schmaltz yes, I 100% understand. But this video is structured around this specific wall thickness on stainless tube. I can a video on how to select amperage for different alloys and material thicknesses.. stainless, titanium, mild steel..aluminum, etc. the rule of thumb for carbon steel is 1 amp per .001 of material so if you were welding 1/16” material or 1.6mm material.. you’d weld at about 62 amps technically.. which works just fine on mild steels. Stainless and titanium and inconel all require less heat to weld. So instead of 1 amp per .001 I will reduce that by a percentage.. mostly off of feel and experience. I will weld .0625 / 1/16 / 1.6mm stainless tube at 50-55 amps.. I set my machine 10 amps higher for cold restarts and quick penetration on restarts. I weld 1mm or .039 wall titanium at about 28 amps or so.. take roughly the 1 amp per .001 rule that you would use in carbon steel and then reduce that by about 10-15% for stainless and titanium just to give you an “idea”. Have a great day!

@@hourglassingenuity103 that's fantastic information. I think it would make a great video. I'm a journeyman welder and you would be surprised by how much that kind of information is helpful to beginners. With any of my apprentices, I try to give them knowledge that can apply to a broad range of situations. I have found that telling someone a specific way to do something about a specific task doesn't help them in the future to be able to correctly alter their process with differing circumstances.

Make a flux. 50% boric acid and 50% borax, mix the powder, heat the powder to 450-500 degrees to melt the powder. Cool, grind the solid piece to a powder. mix the powder with ethyl or isopropyl alcohol until the viscosity is like thick sour cream. Apply a thick flux to the back joint of the pipe, wait 15 minutes. The ethyl alcohol will evaporate. Weld stainless steel pipe. The flux on the back side will melt and close the weld from the air. After welding with hot boiling water inside the pipe.

How are you getting yellow and blue with a #17 cup? I can't get an oxidized weld unless I use a #5 then it's oxidized and grey. Otherwise no matter what I do it's shiny silver. Second pass without filler and a #8 at 15cfh just enough to re melt almost gets straw.
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 4 года назад
If you can’t get oxidation in your welds I’d say that’s a good thing.. these 4 joints are welded out back to back without stopping in about 4 minutes so they got hot and they oxidize.. also, I don’t know how far you are running with your cup and what your post flow is.. I run 1.25” to 1.5” without stopping.. so the blues are halos from loss of coverage when I wrap the tubes radius. Also, I’m not letting my post flow sit forever until the material is cool enough to react to atmosphere and not oxidize. I remove the cup when I’m ready to give it the colors I want it to have. Have a great weekend!

@@mordantly Technically, the blues/purples are failures in the weld quality. If you are doing welds for specific applications and are being inspected, any colors in the weld other than silver or light straw would be failed because of oxidation. The colors are for aesthetics and look pretty but are actually weaker welds than those made with pure silver or straw color. NOW, before I get internet flamed, this all has to do with the application that the welds are being used for. For medical, extreme high pressurized systems or aerospace, purity in the weld is a must. For auto applications like manifolds and such, the colors look pretty awesome and the impurity of the weld will most likely never matter and is just fine. If you are welding and getting pure silver or straw, that's the correct way and you are doing everything right.

Awesome video. However, cross contamination should be mentioned. I realize you are doing a demo but you mentioned stainless and steel on the same belt. Also aluminum table or butcher paper for your table top. No one likes surface rust from cross contamination of steel, especially sanitary and high heat applications. I subscribed.
