So Finally I discovered how to tone my horrible brassy hair and wanted to share that with you all! I am not a professional yet this worked well with me so I decided to spread the word.
So basically using blue-black hair dye with shampoo tones the hair but be careful not to darken the hair by washing it quickly when you see the level of ashiness you like.

ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS: - the recipe in details: Get a blue black box hair dye, use a table spoon of the dye mix (paste and liquid) add to it 3 table spoons of shampoo (white or transparent regular shampoo) mix then add a tea spoon of water. Keep mixing and apply it to dry hair in a good light source to see it until it reaches a shade you like then wash it right away. Note that sulphate free shampoos and such don’t work. - wet or dry hair? I tried it on both but wet hair tends to look darker so it’s hard to know when to wash it off. Also anything you do to wet hair is more damaging as the hair follicle is open so you can’t comb the color through to get even results.

Thank you so much for the awesome video, Im very excited to try it out. I just had one question, I got my hair highlighted blonde awhile back and that has maintained a nice blonde color that I like, I simply need to "tone" the orange/gold part that hasn't been highlighted. Will the blue-black dye effect the highlights in a negative way? Edit: Ive been looking through the rest of your videos and they are all great, I just subscribed! thanks again

Oh my GOD - spent a fortune yesterday getting lightening foils to blend my grey hair after a bad, red brown dye job. Came home with ORANGE hair. Got told by a hairdresser that I was basically stuffed and the only thing was to go back and get very costly toning treatment. Tried this as I cannot cope with light orange hair with my skin tone. It was AMAZING. Have now made myself a wee kit to keep on top of the brassy colour. It will also keep my incoming greys looking a nice steel grey and not yellow and not ruin my natural dark brown hair. You have saved me a fortune and made my going grey process so much easier. This comment might help someone. I had bleached highlights throughout my whole head, ranging from orange, yellow, and then banana yellow right around my face. I used this method kinda, but with a twist. I wanted to tone all 3 colors in my hair without messing this up, so here’s what I came up with. First, I mixed together my blue-black box dye (the color+the developer) (I used Revlon natural blue-black dye) , then I literally squirted out a tablespoon of it into a mixing bowl. To that, I added 1 1/2 cups of conditioner and a tablespoon of water. *optional* I added the tiniest dab of manic panic Violet to the mixture to help with my really blonde parts. (I decided to dilute the hell out of the blue box dye w/conditioner because I was taking noo chances lol. Plus, I had a whole head to tone, not just the ends of my hair...) I applied to dry hair with my hands very quickly starting with the darkest parts first, then did the banana yellow parts last. I kept an eye on it and ended up washing it out after 4 min. It really worked and I was def surprised. It gave my banana yellow a perfect ash blonde with the slightest undertone of grey. It cooled down the brassiness of the yellow and orange too. No complaints!

Just tried this. My hair is naturally a 7 Dark Blond and I lighten it to 8 Medium Blond. It always picks up brassy tones and I have tried everything. I mixed this and poured it on my wet hair. I shampooed for about 1 minute and washed it all out. When I dried my hair it was very shiny and most of the brass tones were gone. I probably should have left it on a bit longer but was not so brave my first time. It did not make my hair darker. It just made it more a medium ash blond which is what I want. Thank you Angie! So clever!

This is one our old school stylists tricks. Back in the day we actually had to make our own color, meaning the weren’t pre calibrated like they are today. So when we would tone, we would put a dab of black in our formula and POW ! Perfect platinum. It’s a great method,thanks for reminding me!

I've tried this with Garnier's blue black hair dye on my level 6-8 asian bleached hair 3 times now and it looks soo good!. I left it in a bit longer than usual the last time and it came out almost grey in the lighter areas and ashy brown elsewhere and just soo nice. My only gripe is it doesn't last super long on the more orange areas but its easy to do and I dont wash my hair very often (2-3x/week) so it helps prolong the toning. Highly recommend everyone try it out!!

I have blonde& platinum highlights over dirty blonde natural hair. I tried this and it WORKS!! one thing she doesn’t mention is that you need to leave the color to develop fully before applying. I sectioned my hair, started my timer after my hair was fully covered and saturated. 1min 30 seconds before I rinsed. Amazing results!! Helped blend my roots too! Left my hair so soft and healthy feeling. Used L’Oréal dream lengths shampoo. I used 1 teaspoon of each in about 1/2 cup of shampoo.

THANK YOU ANGIE! At 65, I decided it was time to go blonde so I had my hair bleached and some parts of my hair (not the roots) came out orange. I was going to have it lightened again in a couple of weeks but found this video and thought I'd give it a try. I was VERY nervous and put it off for days. I'm so glad I plucked up the courage. I followed the directions and most of the orange is gone and I'm mostly left with a nice ashy blonde. Just a little orange tinge remains on the ends of my hair but I'm confident that another session will do the trick. If I'd used a bit more of the dye solution as instructed for orange hair, it probably would have been done and dusted in one session but I wanted to tread carefully. This is such a great trick and I'm very grateful that you shared it.

My hair is thick and long. Started with the mix and the brush from my root's. It was taking forever. So I just slapped in on my ends and worked my way up. Next time I wash my hair I'll need to start in the mid section, go over all the last of the orangey brassy sections. Also, might be a good idea to have an extra person to check my back of hair sections. All in all I'm impressed with the outcome. And my mum has the same (fighting the copper problem). I'll be doing hers from now on too. 😊

I did the old quarantine bleach job and became light orange. I’ve suffered for 3 weeks and put way too many other products on my hair. I tried toner and ash blonde hair color. I ordered Olaplex from Amazon and applied it for two hours to repair my hair. It worked too. I finally found this video on Friday and thank heaven above! I used Revlon Colorsilk with no ammonia Blue Black mixed with conditioner. Be very careful on how long you leave it on. Mine was about 1 minute 30 seconds. If you have long hair I would advise doing it in two stages so you don’t over color and make it too dark. Thank you so much to Angie for this! When you purchase a box of hair dye it usually gives you two liquids inside to mix in order for you to make the color on the box. She did not want to mix both liquids in one bottle because she will make too much color than needed. So, instead she mixed the portion she needed on a bowl and added shampoo.

Since I have been going grey, I have tried different levels of blonde and they always turn brassy quickly. You do have to be super super careful. I did a tes strand first. Then mixed a dime size of each bottle of the Colorsilk Blue Black and about 2-3Tblsp of shampoo and started at the scalp, then used water to mix it into the rest of my short hair, waited about 5 min, then washed out and I get a light chocolate color with greys looking like highlights. Easy, cheap, fast. Works for now at 46 yrs old.

It worked!!! I fixed my own hair! Thank you! FYI my hair is light brown. I had dyed it light ash brown but it turned very brassy orange. I tried this with the blue black dye as instructed with a sulfate shampoo in dry hair for about three minutes. It took some brass out. The next night I used the same combination but left it on about six minutes and the two rounds really killed the brass! Do not mix developer with dye color until you mix it with the sulfate shampoo. From what I’ve read if you do not mix dye with developer, it lasts a while so I am saving it for another treatment if I start to get brassy in a few weeks. I was terrified to do this and watched this video about 100 times before I did it but so glad I did. I would be afraid if I were a blonde, but for brown hair or darker I think this will work. Good luck girls!

People it works!!!!! 😍I have long super thick brown hair with some mild highlights and my hair gets reddish/orangy super quick… dark brass… you know what I mean if you ever tried to have light brown highlights on brown hair. I mixed Schwarzkopf Blue Black color with normal Shampoo… put it on on a test strand and tadaa… after 3-4 minutes my brassy-brown hair turned suuuper ashy! Rinse with cold water! Use standard Black Blue color, cheap box dye. Be cautious don’t leave for long otherwise it will turn too ashy! Do this in day lights as you can see how far the color developed! Love this amazing tip! Thanks Angie! I tried this after using purple shampoo, blue shampoo and ash blonde timers to no effect. I used your recipe but it didn’t take as much as I would have liked so after towel drying it off, I took a deep breath and just mixed up a small amount of colour (as though I was going to dye my hair black) and put it on the brassy (light orangey) top section of my hair. I left it on about 2 mins then washed it off. It worked a treat - turning the top half an ashy darker shade - almost like balayage - and it looks so so much better (like a natural slightly darker roots area). Very pleased. I would totally recommend this method - don’t be afraid to try it. The very little time it is on won’t turn your hair black or anything! Just keep checking every 30 seconds or so to see how it’s going. It 100% removes all orangey tones. Trust the very glamorous salons in the Middle East to do this “rinsage” method! Thank you Angie for putting this out there.

I mixed a Ash Brown cool tea 1 tablespoon color and one tablespoon of the developer to the shampoo and kept it on my dry hair for 10 minutes! It worked! I used about 1/4 teaspoon of the developer and colour cream and mixed with about same amount of shampoo you used, but instead used conditioner. I did my roots first as they were the worst and warm brown. The ends were blonde. So on roots I left it about 5-10 min (I did a few tests to see how long) and the ends that were blonde I only lathered through and then rinsed. After washing my hair a couple times it's PERFECT ash toned.

@@NE0Nwhip Hey there. It took just one wash to tone down all the brassiness. At the first attempt, I used too little because I was scared, and it didn't work, so I followed Angie's advice and used more hair dye right away (+ cream developer + shampoo) and got perfect results. Apply on wet hair and lather up. I think you just need to add more hair dye. Test it on a strand first. The color got a little bit darker on my ends because they're dry, but I've washed my hair a few times since I've used this trick, and the color is perfectly blended now. The orange is gone

@Francesca_CactusBlossom
@Francesca_CactusBlossom 5 лет назад
@@NE0Nwhip Let me add this- Depending on the thickness of your hair, you might need a higher volume developer to see results. I have fine hair texture and 20 volumes work for me within seconds. If 20 volumes don't work, then maybe you need 30. Just keep in mind that 30 volume developers open up the hair cuticle more, so the color penetrates deeper into the hair and it lasts longer, but it might as well turn out much darker than expected. So just test the mixture on a hidden strand of hair to find the formula that works for you. And, for the test, don't make a small amount, make the amount you need for the whole head, because otherwise it's difficult to make the perfect amount in proportion. Good luck!

Thank you so much!! For the benefit of other readers, this works. I have (dyed) level 7 medium brown hair which had a lot of gold and red tones through it. I used the same brand of hair colour as you and the same amounts of colour and developer, mixed into about a cup of cheap conditioner. I washed my hair as usual and left the conditioner on wet hair for about 2 minutes. I used it with conditioner and wet hair as I was being cautious - my hair picks up green tones if I use any hair colour with ash in it, and I wanted to prevent this. This process has toned down both the red and gold colour, and left my hair a sandy coloured brown. The process hasn't added any darkness or depth of colour to my hair, it has only toned down the brassiness. My hair tends to fade to red and gold because I like to re-colour only the roots most of the time, to keep my hair as healthy as possible. I have just done this process to get rid of some of the brassiness before I re-colour my roots. I have a LOT of grey roots at the moment and this hasn't changed the colour of them at all. For anyone with very light blonde hair, I would definitely try this. If you are worried about doing it, just try it on a small section of hair underneath first. Given that it has not changed the colour of my greys, I think it will work for you. It is so quick, easy and cheap! Thank you again!!!!

@@NoSuchThingAsGoodbye I had balayage in my hair and the process of toning with the blue/black dye got rid of the orange tones that came through. The resulting tone was a light ashy brown, but my hair had been lightened quite a bit prior to doing this. I think the tone you will end up with will depend on how much lifting of your own natural color was done in the first place. I like the tone I get after doing this, but it's not the original tone that I had when I had it colored+toned at the salon. That's why I think this method works well only in between professional salon appointments. I'm quite satisfied with this method overall as I've done it 3 times now. I hope this helps & good luck!

Blonde here. Took the plunge and tried it. IT WORKS!! How well it works depends on how much bleached hair you have and how long you leave it on your bleached bits. It DOES darken bleached blonde, so you gotta rinse out after 2-3 minutes! I bought a $2.50 box of Revlon Blue Black dye, I mix up a spoonful of dye, then mix that with my shampoo. My hair is waist-length, I cake quite a lot of it on my roots, and lather downward. My hair was bleached but it's halfway grown out. So I don't lather it much on my bleached ends. My hair was a brassy mess from dying it light blonde for years. I'd been toning with violet Punky hair dye without ever getting the ashy hair color I wanted. The black hair dye gets that result! Currently I'm toning with a scoop of Blue/Black, scoop of violet Punky, and a drop of ION Blue Ash intensifier. This mix creates perfect dark Ash Blonde/ light Ash Brown, costs pennies, and is super gentle on my long thin hair. Cheap Easy Secret was Right. You Rock Angie!!

This really works! I searched for a dark orange fix and this trick provided! My hair was complicated to fix, I'm a natural brown/chestnut with highlights done 8 months ago, used a blonde from L'Oreal that turned my natural hair caramel/red and it wasn't awful , but it just didn't suit me. So I had highlights that I wanted to keep and orange that had to go. I got a blue black from L'Oreal, mixed all of it, not knowing how much I will need, got a conditioner from L'Oreal, since I didn't wanna waste mine. First I added about a table spoon of dye and 3 of conditioner, applied quickly on all the hair, left around 3-4 minutes and rinsed. It was far from being perfect but it did something. OBVIOUSLY not all hair is the same. I mixed about the same proportions again, applied just on the roots and just waited and looked in the mirror for the right shade, color. I think it took around 5-10 minutes and PURE DYE added on top of the mixture on my head to get rid of that reddish color. Some of my highlight are greyish silver now, but it looks great! This fix actually works, it wont stain your hair in just 2-3 minutes. Don't be afraid to reapply and play with concentration if the orange doesn't go away the first time. If you have highlights it might make them grey if you leave it for too long, but 2 minutes won't ruin your hair! Promise! Good luck! P.S.: I really wanted my roots to also be a bit darker, thus the undiluted dye added. Overall I am really happy with the results!

This “trick” saved my sanity! Natural hair color is medium ash brown with gray/white mixed in. Stopped dying my hair the warm chocolate/caramel color 8 months ago to grow out my natural color. The bottom five inches of my hair were bright/brassy orange and I was wearing my hair in buns & ponies for months since my hair looked gross. since I have very thick, medium length hair, I quadrupled the recipe of toner and dye and added two small travel size bottles of shampoo. I managed to have enough to cover my entire head and I left it on about 10 to 12 minutes after finishing the top layer. I was extremely nervous and didn’t want to overdo it, but I am happy with the results. The brassiness is gone and the line of demarcation between my natural and the orange is practically invisible. My gray/white hairs are a tint of gray/blue, but look fine. The next time I do this, I will definitely leave it on for about 15 minutes or so, especially on the top layer ends as they are not as processed as the underneath. Thank you for this tutorial!!!!

It's better to first try with very small amount or only a strand and wash it immediately and repeat if needed. Thanks for this useful tip!!! 😊

@@petraromanova1938 it happened to me and I washed it three times with dandruff shampoo and it faded out. It will wash out, don't panic! That's why you have to leave it only 1 or 2 minutes to avoid greenish or blueish tones. Esther Ethereal I used it as a shampoo so I applied it to wet hair. I did it twice. The first time I didn’t leave it on long enough so the second time I washed my hair with it and left it on for a few minutes while I finished bathing and then rinsed it all out and then conditioned.

Omg so I tried it. Why on earth did I not know this before. I was struggling with blue shampoo. It dripped and caused blue greasy buildup on my scalp. So I bought Syoss midnight blue and made the shampoo, applied to dry hair for two minutes and rinsed. Tip, add a lot of shampoo to the mixture because dry hair is harder to lather in. Mix it well and let it develop into a very dark blue. When I dried my hair I couldn't believe it. My hair is so so ashy. A tiny bit darker too but I love that because that looks fresh and it's summer, my hair was getting too glassy. I love love love this, it saves me so much money on Fanola orders. I even consider throwing out the Fanola. It makes my hair too dry and the effect is not great. Thank you thank you thank you a million times!

I did try this tonight and it does get rid of the brassiness. You just have to be careful not to put too much of the dye when mixing with the shampoo. If you do that you will see green blueish tone. This works better then blue shampoo. Also I tried it on a strip before doing it all over. Once when you put it on wash it out immediately cause it turns the brassiness down fast.

@@arianaspillane3727 I used Gariner’s Blackberry Mojito (BL21). I mixed the color and developer in the provided bottle and in a separate bowl added about a tablespoon worth of the hair dye and about a 1.5 cups of shampoo. Mixed it well and applied it to my hair. I let it sit for about 3 minutes (looking at the color as it toned) and washed it out when I liked where it was at. I also massaged the mixture into the hair for that 3 minutes. This worked great! I have long dark brown hair that has been highlighted, bleached, dyed red, and toned a ton of times over the last few years. Now I am growing my grey hair out and as it grows in you can see the cool dark brown of my natural color. The brassy orange of my formally dyed hair was driving me nuts. So I followed this video, purchased a "Black Indigo" dye and a sulfate free shampoo (the brand she shows in the video) just at the drugstore. I used about three(mainly because my hair was dark orange red and long) dollops/swipes like she shows of the color and then three dollops of the developer, mixed in about 2/3 cup of shampoo. I started on my ends because they bothered me the most, then worked my way up. This way was great because I didn't have to cover my natural color at the top. I had my phone stopwatch going and made sure to wash it out before it hit the 2 minute mark (1:44). I rinsed out with cool water and then applied the conditioner that came with the dye. I let that sit for 2-3 minutes and then rinsed and air dried. It's perfect. I was prepared for a big oops that would lead to black hair, but no. It's a lovely dark ash/mushroom brown that resembles my natural cool tone brown hair. I will maintain it with blue conditioner and saved the rest of the box for the next touch up. Thank you so much!!!!

Thank you for posting this Angie! This saved my hair! I went from pumpkin orange to a dark blonde with gold undertones (I plan to do this one more time). After I left the dye-developer-shampoo mixture to develop it turned into a navy blue. I was hesitant to use it but I’m glad I did. I left it in my hair for two minutes and rinsed it out. Now my hair looks a lot more natural :) for the record: I have very thick shoulder length hair that’s naturally dark brown.

@@monikabhoir8820 I mixed twice the amount of shampoo I use to wash my hair, a bit of dye (a 3 cm long squirt maybe? xD) and 2-3 drops of developer. A bit too much shampoo is better than too little shampoo btw. Yeah I started applying from the roots, and on wet hair because it was easier. I recommend using smaller amounts of dye and developer on your first time, and increasing it for the next wash if it doesn't tone your hair enough. Good luck! :)

Ree Alhosani hi, so my hair was orange, very less red tones so i can only say from my experience. I followed her recipe exactly so dye (with developer and colour cream), shampoo and water in the ratio 1:3:1 if that makes sense? I had to leave it in for about 5 ish mins because it was orange and not yellow hair, and you might have to leave it for longer. You can always reapply if you don’t like it first time. It toned my hair, so got rid of most of the orange, so overall maybe a little darker? Hope this helps :)

Omg, I have two types of orange in my hair, and I don’t have a cheap blue black dye, so I mixed equal parts of blue and black, and it came out perfect on the lighter ends, but had to leave it on the upper parts that were really dark orange for longer, but I am very thankful to Allah and you, as this not only saves my hair color, but it saves my hair, as now I don’t need to bleach it again to get it light enough and damaged enough, to use a toner, and going forward I don’t plan on bleaching it any longer than the original 35 minutes I did to get this orange. I’ve damaged my hair so bad in the past, I have learned to live with orange hair for many months becoming panicky and then dying it black cherry. I’m not gonna do anything different this time as I like my hair not becoming so damaged yet I am achieving the same results using this method, please keep sharing things like this.
