Honestly, one of the best replacement guide videos I've seen for this year Corolla. I know this is a 7 year old video and you may even make better ones now, but everything was clear and concise enough. I have to replace my rack, second time since I've owned this car in 2010. It made it to at least 2019 without the rack leaking (oem). Replaced it with a reman, now I have to replace it again this year (although 5 to 6 years seems average for replaced units). Decided to just buy completely new, no reman, maybe it'll last until the car finally falls apart lol I'm not interested in doing this myself, but at least I can help my mechanic as we're doing it without a lift too.

Just from my experience rack and pinion comes out from drivers side ,however you need to drop subframe ,remove rear motor mount and mount holder too. You have to twist rack and pinion upside down to fit through access hole and way to do it bring rack pinion head where motor mount was and rotate it 180 deg so is upside down then pull it back and fit it thru acces hole ,head first then the body,hope it helps.

Thanks you! It was a big job but with your help I was able to replaced the rack and opinion on my 97 Corolla. I was able just to loosen (but not removed) the front crossmember suspension in place by a floor jack and then remove the three rear transaxle mounting bolts to get to the last bolt holding the rack and opinion in place. I also needed to remove the rear transaxle through bolt for clearance to remove that last rack and opinion bolt. Unfortunately, I snapped a bolt when torquing one of the bolt that was not clearly specified in my manual. Thank God it was not a critical bolt for the front crossmember suspension. It was for the front stabilizer bar that was not equipped in my car. I would not attempt this repair again. It was painful not having a lift. BTW, that front number 8 metric stabilizer bolt should be torque to about 108 ft-lbs. Toughest part of the job was removing the power steering hoses and the last rack and opinion bolt blocked by the rear transaxle through bolt. It took me about 3 days to get the job done and a professional wheel alignment. I am a novice.

After finishing this job i realized that the best way to remove the rack and pinion in or out of the car is to remove rear motor mount and mount holder too and just use that space there instead of access hole just make sure put your jack with piece of wood under transmission and raise it. Also before you install you new rack and pinion in place try your hose fittings because i had that problem with my first part and had to return and reorder from different vendor.

Great video. My 1998 corolla with 250K miles just stared leaking steering fluid, I'm crossing my fingers is just a hose issue cause replacing the rack and pinion might worth more than the car itself and not planning on doing it myself. Man these corollas are build to last for ever, is the most realiable car I ever had. Had a few GM's, buicks and ford but those are not reliable et all. I'm only buying toyota from now on.

@@FixitBongbong Finally finished this. Your instructions were terrible lol, but I still owe you a few beers! Like others have said, you skipped over the hardest parts and in some places skipped things entirely! That said, this is the only video on here about this for the Corolla, so it did get me on the right track as far as the basic steps and especially the subframe. Also, I didn't end up having to completely remove the subframe, I just let it hang down. Like you said, probably not the best practice haha

I have a question if the power steering makes a winding noise and it leaks should you see the fluid on the ground
@FixitBongbong

Whining noise typically means fluid is low, if you have a slow leak you might not see any big puddles on the ground, but I would imagine your subframe to be pretty nasty.

Hey there! You need to get an alignment anytime you disturb the suspension or steering geometry in a vehicle. In this project's case the lower strut mounts were disconnected as well as the tie rods being removed from the rack to be swapped onto the new part.

You desperately need a nice long breaker bar! You're in danger of busting your foot & ratchet with that pipe. Hey there, great question.. I actually had to rewatch the video as a reminder since I did this job 4 years ago! So at 14:13 I poorly explained it but to answer your question it went through the driver's side tie rod passes through. In order to get the rack to pass you have to push the arm all the way driver's side to allow you to tilt the rack upwards to clear/shimmy the steering pinion through the hole and then it should pass right through. I hope this helps!!

As for the right side of your motor.. have you checked your power steering pump and valve cover gasket?
@Fata1fr3ak
@Fata1fr3ak 7 лет назад
I replaced my valve cover gasket about two years ago. And my power steering pump doesn't 'seem to be leaking'. But it is covered in grease and sludge. Although I have a strange buzzing/rattling sound that only occurs in gear and when accelerating from a stop. Which has gradually gotten louder over the past 4 or 5 years. But goes away when it's warmed up. I'll be checking my belt drive by removing my serpentine belt and checking if the buzzing goes away. If not, I'll flush my power steering and put in ATF like the manual says, and not synthetic power steering fluid. My last ditch effort is to check the motor/transmission mounts, which as far as I know, have never been changed. I'm at 183k miles now. I probably won't change out my drive axle until I get a better car jack. Using a cheapo 'Blackjack' that my wife bought a few years ago. Height is extremely limiting my range of movement, lol.

Hello. Quick question. I have a little wheel play 3-9 which moves my steering wheel slightly. The axle rotated like it’s really bent or something but I am not sure what it is. Is it the axle or the power steering bushings? Or what? Shakes at high speeds and shakes badly while braking at high speeds

@FixitBongbong 4 года назад
I'd start with your tie rod ends and lower ball joints.

Fix it Bongbong good! I actually just noticed that my axle is in a diagonal angle. Ball joint it’s fine no play or sounds. But I think it’s the wrong side or wrong part. It’s making the strut point backwards thus causing the axle to be in a diagonal angle. Jeeez! Thank you for the quick reply! I will start by replacing that. Or may be the ball joint is busted and came out of place. Regardless. I will start with that! Thank you! Liked and subscribed! I got my corolla for 650$ beat up so I have done all kind of stuff for less than 200$. I am keeping my budget low but good quality parts

Great vid...!! Quick question, did u need to support the engine with the floor Jack or would the engine and transmission mount support the motor n tranny??
@FixitBongbong
@FixitBongbong 4 года назад
Thank you! Yes, I supported the engine with a floor jack. You can also use an engine support brace tool like here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iyn23_4Wkj4.html

Do you need to drop rackandpion to change the steering yoke?
@FixitBongbong
@FixitBongbong 2 года назад
Great question.. I'm not certain since I haven't ever serviced this rack or any for that matter.. but given the space constraints I would imagine it would help to remove the steering rack to perform any service outside of the rods.

Is it any easier to remove a rack and pinion from the junkyard? 97 corolla
@FixitBongbong
@FixitBongbong 4 года назад
Than buying a new or reman unit? I'd say going to the junkyard for one would be more difficult and honestly a gamble.. I'd hate to do the job again in short time should the used rack go.

Is this process similar for the 9th Gen Corolla? 2003-2008.
@FixitBongbong
@FixitBongbong 5 лет назад
I'm not certain, but I'd image there would be some significant differences as the 9th gen corollas were quite the redesign. Same concept I'd imagine.. you'd most likely have to drop the subframe.

@@FixitBongbong For anybody with a 9th Gen Corolla: I had a leak at the top of the rack, it's possible to change the upper seal without removing the subframe or the power steering assembly.

I'd recommend 4 just to get the car up as high as possible.

Well most likely a mixture of not knowing how to use a camera, different shoot days, and auto mode doing all sorts of crazy things.. but mostly me not knowing how to camera.

your video does not make sense to me. if you remove the rack and pinion from the driver side wheel, why the hell did you remove the subframe and engine mount, i think you did some unnecessary work basically you just made the job harder then it should be
@FixitBongbong
@FixitBongbong 3 года назад
Great point! It's been a few years since I did this job and this was my first RU-vid video so in full transparency I wish I was more detailed and concise. Anyway if memory serves.. one must remove the subframe to gain access to the brackets that are securing the rack to the firewall. Trust me, I definitely don't like doing unnecessary work! Appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
