You can use CorelDRAW Trace Outline to convert a Bitmap to a Vector Graphic. This uses the CorelDRAW 2019 Trace but this will work with earlier versions of CorelDRAW as well.
In this CorelDRAW tutorial I show you how to use CorelDRAW Trace.

Thanks very much, George.That was a brilliantly taught and very useful lesson. Question - On the left ear gradient in the vector image on the right, the final result has some jaggies and a thin white line in the outer part of the image you worked on (where the dark red is adjacent to the black). The original seems to have that, too. Is there any way of getting rid of that?

Hi, once the image has been converted to a vector graphic you can edit it like you would any other vector graphic.

Hey. I have a vinyl cutting machine and want to have a better place to make my designs. What kind of Coreldraw do you use? Would the CorelDRAW Home & Student Suite 2019 work ? There are so many different ones.

I use the standard CorelDRAW. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with vinyl cutting machines so can't help you with that.

I have the trial version and Im trying to work along. I imported the image but the tool bar is different that the one you are using. It doesnt have the bitmaps-outline trace-clipart

Make a New Document, Import your bitmap image into that new document, make sure you are on the Pick tool (arrow tool) and click on the bitmap image, now you will see the Trace Bitmap option in the options panel

I am having trouble with a image with a black background I want removed. It's only a Initial and two words but I can't seem to figure out how to just trace and removed the background..

Hi, depends on how busy the background is. I would try doing the trace, then delete all of the objects except for the text objects. Easier to do in the dockers instead of the image itself.

How do you remove those white outlines after doing the trace bitmap around the objects? those outlines don't have any color so they show the white background instead.

if they don't have any color then just hide the background and you are fine. If you can clean up the image before doing the tracing you will get a better result. Also sometimes increasing the contrast on the bitmap can help the trace

@@HTGGeorge They're visible in your own image at 18:10. So far the only way I've been able to fix them has been by selecting all the image and copying/pasting over it a couple of times then grouping them, but only after I'm done with the image.

How do I bring in the raster graphic to even start doing this. I would really like to be able to convert quilt block images to vector first and then learn to draw as I am a newbe

I did everything you said and I get an error message from Coral draw 2019 1 Issue Bitmap Image - the current document/selection contains one or more objects that will represented as a bitmap image... not supported by svg viewers and I cannot use it on my cutter.

I have paid for your CorelDraw I have paid for your CorelDraw Graphs Suite 2019 course also. I was trying to convert a jpg log cabin image high quality image and I tired every option you showed in your video but I was able to export/save as a svg but I always received an Issue 1 telling me that it was still an jpg image and it would be saved that way and programs would not recognize it as a svg file and they do not. I also tried the convert to bitmap method mentioned below and it does the same thing. Would you please explain what I need to do to get it to work.

HI Irene, the image needs to be traced to a vector graphic first, like shown in this video. Then that vector graphic can be saved out as svg. But the jpg cannot be saved directly to svg as it is a completely different type of image.

One more thought, high quality photographic images are really not appropriate for the svg format. They are better left as jpg. Unless you are simplifying the image to give it a more graphic look then that would be appropriate but in that case I may do a posterization effect in a photo program first then trace the posterized image.

why not use convert to bitmap and select 300 to 500 dpi on the 72 dpi image I use this all the time

That works fine but it isn't the tool I was demonstrating. As with all graphics programs there are several ways to do things.

When I export it even using your method I get Issue 1 saying it is a jpg image and programs will not recognize it as a svg even though it is saved as a svg file and it will not open as svg either.
