It's very important to start up your gas leak detection device outside in fresh air. That way it ensures it will be very sensitive to picking up those gas leaks. I also want to point out 2 more things. in regards to doing the soap test. No. 1, always use a noncorrosive soap - or at least as close to it as possible. And No. 2, ALWAYS use it AFTER using the leak detection device. If you use the soap first, it could give you a false positive reading on your leak detection device from any residual soap that's left on the pipes. I also want to add that if you smell gas or are suspicious of a gas leak, please, please step outside and call your gas company's emergency hotline. They all have a phone number specifically for these situations. Gas leaks are nothing to play around with! Depending on the severity of the leak, simply lighting a cigarette, cell phone ringing, turning on a light switch or any other electrical current could lead to an explosion. Stay safe everyone! :-)

Good info! I wasted a couple hours learning that soap and leak detection fluid can set off your electronic gas detector.

The adapter is machined thread going into pipe thread that doesn’t match together, should be a regular nipple

or you could just use dish soap diluted in water 50%, and spray it on the pipes. in fact, if you detect a leak with that detector, the spray bottle of "bubble-water" can help you tell where EXACTLY in the line the break is. nicest thing is, you can dilute it LESS if you need the solution to stick to the pipes better for bubbling. also, Scamazon has the detector for around $20. just saying. no need to return. just throw it in your toolkit for future needs. without battery in, so that it lasts.

Returning a used tool to any retail store, expecting a full refund, is unethical. Many people do it, but that doesn't make it right.

3:28 is the advice in question. That being said, this video is from 5 years ago and maybe things have changed since then (they may have been very expensive back then). I just bought one of these style of testers off Amazon for $40 and the thing is awesome. I would consider this an invaluable tool if you have gas connections in your home. After I checked my own work, I went and checked other gas connections in the house and actually found them to have small leaks, stuff that’s been like that for years and done by professionals.

They sell inexpensive gas sniffers on Amazon and ebay. Probably not the finest quality, but they work fine for the diy-er.

Gas Company shut off the gas - we can only use air to test - Plumber spent 8 hours over 2 days ($1000) still can't find the leak
@how2q
@how2q 5 лет назад
That sounds like what happened at my sister-in-law's house. It took them a while to find - she was without gas for almost two weeks! I knew my son & his girlfriend had a feint smell so instead of calling the gas company I came over and filmed that video!lol We called the gas company & of course a plumber...they didn't have hot water for 4 days before we could turn it on. The person that installed the water heater did a hack job when the house was flipped to them. Thanks for watching...hope they figure out the leak!

Using a tool and returning it to a store that sells $5 plastic downspouts for $25 and $1 rubber washers for sink leaks for $10 isn't unethical. It's karma.

So that was the wrong kind of fitting meant for a different kind of coupling, or was it just a defective fitting?

Yes, completely wrong coupling. The hack that installed it must have thought it was close enough.

@3:34 Jerk move.
@how2q
@how2q 3 года назад
Thank you for your comment. To some, yes jerk move. If you have plenty of money, call a professional or gas company. These testers can be extremely expensive and for those on a very limited budget it's a smart move for the one time in your life you will track down a gas leak (hopefully). Just my opinion, thank you again for sharing yours.
@risajajr
@risajajr 3 года назад
@@how2q I'll elaborate. Even on a tight budget, a basic tester can be found for ~$25 at the local hardware store. If you really can't afford that, then you have much bigger problems being a home owner. Assuming you have a gas leak, you will need to repair it. You can try to do it yourself, although it is usually strongly advised not to as the risk is high if you fail to do it correctly. Thus, you probably need to call a plumber anyhow, which is never cheap. But, buying a tool, using it, then returning it is a form of theft. If the real issue is you don't want to have to store a tool you believe you won't need again, then give it away to someone who needs it.
