It's our responsibility as pet owners to keep our dogs safe. A big part of that is making sure that your dog always stays on your property. In this video, I'm showing you how to train your dog to stay in the yard and stop him from exploring your neighbor's property. All you need for this are some boundary flags, like these (amzn.to/35dbK9d) or these ones from PetSafe (amzn.to/2ASlac8).
Full written instructions here: topdogtips.com/...
There are many ways to do that, and one of the most common is by learning how to train a dog to stay in the yard using the usual dog training methods. Most pet parents like the idea of keeping their pup in the yard without having to tether him or put up an unsightly fence.
"The key to training a dog to stay in the yard is boundaries - your dog needs to know where they are, and he needs to understand that there will be consequences if he crosses them. Consequences don't mean yelling or any type of negative action."

Yea you missed it. You walk with them on a leash. If they stay in the boundary and seem to realize there is one, you reward them. If they cross the boundary, you call them back and if that doesn't work, use the leash.

I have seen the boundary flags idea before. This vid was helpful. My 11-month-old rescue dog is in the bathroom now, on a 20 minute timeout for leaving the yard this morning and being gone ONE HOUR before we found him down the street. He already got his two-mile fast walk this morning, but still felt the need to take off. Oh, how precious is a dog who knows to stay home . . .

@lookingglass9175

It’s not the dog that’s dumb.
@Hr1s7i
@Hr1s7i 6 лет назад
+MiTmite9 The dog isn't dumb. Simply doesn't know how things are. First train your dog to come to you. Have a bunch of concealed treats on you. Get him/her used to coming to you on command. When the dog does something bad, frown (don't hit, physical abuse NEVER works) so they feel that you're unhappy. When they do something wrong a few times and see you get unhappy every time, they'll build the association. Now you have your two basic tools to teach your dog about boundaries. He/she needs to know that you'll get unhappy when they cross a boundary. You can use pretty much anything. Even a low fence is a boundary with enough training. Also there's one more thing - an exception that this training doesn't account for. If there is a bitch in heat somewhere in the neighborhood and your dog is male. He'll run off no matter how much you trained him.

IM HAVING THE SAME ISSUE RIGHT NOW. My pup is 11-months like yours was when you wrote this. She came to us when she was 6-months and she never left our yard. We don't have fence, but like a loose bush fence. For 4-5 months she never left. She stayed in the yard to well. But then it all changed some night. She just took off. She didn't come back when I called just ran further. Went to neighbors yards and wouldn't listen at all. Now it's become a regular thing. Where just a few months ago we would be outside for hours and hours just out in the yard not doing much and she would stay by my side now she just bolts off. She can not be let outside without a leash anymore and I need to fix that.

I like the idea of visual reminders, but what to do with 10 acres? My plan is to walk the property line with them on a leash to at least help them understand the boundary.
@traceystock7352
@traceystock7352 9 месяцев назад
We thought this and we found out that 4 acre is not 4 miles. We regret conditioning our german shep to the property line. She is now hyper territorial against one of our neighbors who turned out to be a nature lover who spends time near our property line. If we had it to do over again we'd give our dog an invisible fence boundary half way to the property line and board fence around the house that allows us to control her closer in. Most humans who enter our yard are legit and not a threat. And most trespassers near the property line are not a danger and best dealt with through face to face or law enforcement.
@victorw3378
@victorw3378 3 года назад
Seems like a good method, I am going to give it a try with my wandering 1.5 year old lab. How do you help the dog understand the difference between it not being OK to leave the yard vs. when it is OK to go for a walk with you in the neighborhood? It seems that once they understand the property boundary and respect it, that they would get confused when being taken for a walk outside the property boundary.

Dogs can understand what different objects mean- so if you have a harness or leash for walks, your dog will understand it's okay to cross the boundary as long as they're with you. If they don't have it on, they should know crossing isn't okay. It's all about being consistent from day 1

I have a 10 month old, have only had him for 4 months now. I'll take him for late night walks with a long line and he does really well. The other night, I was feeling pretty confident to just set the long line down so I could tie my shoe and he took off. I already knew in his mind, it was a game and he wanted me to chase after him. Instead, I continued walking on my way and completley ignoring his behaviour(secretly praying that he was going to come back). Sure enough, I was about 50 feet away from him when all the sudden he comes running after me almost to tell me that he was still here. Learnt my lesson and thankfully he wasnt hurt. I tried a e collar and done many training sessions with him to get him accustomed to what it means when he feels it. The problem I have with this poor quality e collar is that the vibration setting even at 100(which I do not use unless I'm stopping the dog from being put in a harmful situation) doesn't even have any effect on him, he will feel it and then just carry on doing his own thing. Same deal goes for the shock.

My dog is very well boundary trained. I'm struggling with the concept of permitting boundaries.. that are sometimes not allowed. There's a creek that he IS allowed to swim in, I need him to know that he SOMETIMES is not allowed to jump in... any ideas 😬 It's a 50 feet range, I can't add visible boundries in each day It's not a lack of recall. He comes when asked, if he gets to the water before I catch him there's nothing I can do. We have to cross the water.

The flags are really great tip because it does give the dog visualization even if they can't see color they can see the brightness. Would I would even recommend is with those get some sticks you can stab in the ground and do what coyote Trappers do and Mark those sticks and make them pee sticks for the dog that way the dog sees it and maybe even wants to Mark its boundary. Or you may not want those since sticks that close to the boundary so maybe placing them 3 ft inside the boundary good tips

Honest question - aren’t the flags a nuisance to mow around? I have a yard that’s about 3/4 acre. I pay someone to mow and trim it. They’re very reasonable, so I don’t want to add any obstacles for them to have to trim around. Is there any other way to mark the boundaries where there are no natural boundaries?

This young lady is showing how to train your dog not to leave the yard. It is the exact same training as used with an underground fence with a shock collar. It takes 4 weeks to train the dog using flags. On leash training is used for the dog to understand. My sister just used a training collar and a leash. If the dog went past the flags he got the buzz tone and told "NO". Next step after 2 weeks on leash was off leash. Doggie would go only to the flags. She would give the buzz and he would step back and be rewarded. Sure he tried to go past the flags as my Sister was watching from the backdoor. She buzzed but didn't see her keep going. Minor shock and he reversed course. The only difference of using the underground fence is that the fence will do the correction not you. Google underground fence and see if you can down load the instructions. Good Luck.
@patriciafox5626
@patriciafox5626 2 года назад
The problem with an underground fence is that it will sink over time as the ground settles. Ours only lasted a couple of years. We had a husky. Huskies are naturally born with a need to run (thus their use as Sled Dogs). She got so smart, she would lay near the fence and keep testing it with her collar until it quit giving the warning sound. Then she would run for it. Sometimes when the battery was good, If there was a squirrel in the yard, she would take off after it and accept the shock. Then she would come back a couple of hours later and sit in our neighbors' driveway and bark at us to come and get her. She knew we would take the collar off to bring her back. We did that because we didn't want her to be afraid to let us know she was back. Some dogs are highly trainable...Others not so. When I took her to puppy obedience classes, the instructor warned me that Huskies are one of the more difficult breeds to train. My husband wants to get a lab now and they are supposed to be easier to train. We also live on a lake now, so a lab would love it here. I'm just not sure if I want another dog.

We have a two year old female german shepherd we bought right after we moved to our new house and thought we were moving to the country. It turned out to be a "neighborhood in the country" where people have acreage homes ranging from 2 to 7 acres. We had our invisible fence installed all around the perimeter of the property line only to find that the woods surrounding our home is actually outside the property line and now neighbors are appearing in those woods to putter do whatever. This drives our shepherd dog nuts and she barks constantly at the guy next door while he trims trees, etc. The other neighbors are steadily installing board fences on their side of the property line but it does nothing to conceal the stimulation of seeing and hearing the neighbors just a few feet away from the invisible fence line. We are considering installing a 3 or 4 board fence ourselves closer in away from the property line but the invisible fence is so close to the property line we are wondering how to go about this? There is only a couple feet between the invisible fence line and property line and there are bushes and trees and even a stream in there. Should be put the wooden board fence inside the invisible fence or will this cause her to lose her invisible fence training? The terrain is heavily vegetated where the property line is so we could risk installing the wood fence on the neighbor's property outside the fence but I would think they would notice at some point and we would hate to be "those neighbors" or risk being forced to move a new fence. So how to incorporate a wood fence in a large 4 acre yard with existing invisible fence that is just inside the boundary to keep our dog further away from the property line so she doesnt stand there barking at the neighbors on their own land? I'm afraid they will call the sheriff at some point.

This is not an effective method if there is suddenly a “lure” on the other side of the boundary, such as a squirrel, another dog, some smell that is new such as wild animal scat. You are showing a calm dog that appears trained already. Also, does that same dog stay in the boundary when you are in the house? Show the video with a young dog that has energy and is easily distracted which typifies a lot of breeds. We have a very bright 1 year old Golden. Flags mean nothing to her. She smells them, she can do exactly what the dog in the video does because she is paying attention to the tension on the retractable leash and the voice......just like the dog in the video. Let her off her leash and she could care less. The flag is just a big leaf blowing in the breeze....
@amandahayward2977
@amandahayward2977 4 года назад
Both issues you bring up can be addressed. The first is through distraction proofing. So you put the dog in more and more difficult situations in a controlled way. For example eventually taking their favorite toy and throwing it over the boundary while they have a long leash on so you could stop them if they try to run through it. The second part about them not respecting the boundary when you're away is making them think you're always around (and having them well trained before you leave them alone). As long as the edges of the boundary are visible to you just spend time watching them when you first start leaving them alone. If they're about to leave open a window and say "no", or some people use e collars. It's never 100% though so you have to decide if it's worth it or not.
@amandahayward2977
@amandahayward2977 4 года назад
If it isn't obvious you can also get your dog super amped up and then practice respecting the barrier. If I can get my Red heeler to slam into a down from a full on run in the middle of chasing a cow you can get your dog to not walk through a barrier. I believe in you!! Just practice practice practice.

Beyond my property is a condominium complex, which has many dogs and a lot of interesting smells. The other day a police officer brought her back and I didn’t even realize she was gone! Another time she roamed on to the frozen river alongside my house and fell through the ice. How do I keep her from roaming beyond my large property?

Yeah this doesn't work at all unless the dog is highly trained to be obedient already. We have a 2 yr old lab and a 4 yr old husky and if they get even the slightest chance to bolt they. are. gone. They come back eventually but it's hair raising watching them dart across the road and back. We have tried boundary training. We have tried treats. Positive reinforcement. Negative reinforcement. Shock collars. Wireless dog fence. Wired dog fence. You know what the husky did? She decided that should could stand the shock for 15 seconds while she leaped across the perimeter. Basically gave her self a seizure while running through it and then ran along her merry way. At this point I firmly believe that without thousands of dollars of training from the day they come into the world dogs cannot be trained as simply as this woman is implying.

What have u guys done ? Did the dog(s) eventually learn.? I have a 1 year old German Shepherd and he also leaves the gate sometimes, hes been doing it more now so it's really annoying and scary since hes a big dog I'm afraid he may bite someone or fight another dog.

Also, my dog understands basic commands (Sit, down, come here, stay, etc) but hes pretty stubborn and sometimes doesnt even pay attention to me... 😣 so I'm thinking of maybe having sessions with a trainer.. and I know it's my fault in a way for not being on his ass and training him as a puppy, and also I'm not the best trainer so.. 🤧

JB 02 I got my spaniel when he was already three years old, and already had the bad habit of leaving the yard. He was found wandering along the road, and taken to the spca. We adopted him, after the spca had put in numerous adverts for the owners to come forward. Nobody ever came to claim him, so we landed ourselves with a nice, big, fat problem. He will NOT stay in the yard, and finds any and every way in which to escape. I have a boerbul x German Shepherd, and she has never even attempted to jump a wall or fence. I have a bull terrier, who has never attempted to cross the boundary either. I think this spaniel was never trained as a pup to obey any command, and yet he sits on command now. He responds to being called, and immediately comes. I am at a loss, as he is a really lovely dog, but has this inherent urge to wander. He is neutered, so he is not seeking out females. I really have tried everything, without resorting to harsh methods, such as shock collars etc. he has to be on a leash every time he goes out now, which probably is as frustrating to him, as it is to us, poor baby. I really have no solution and so our ‘normal’ for him, is the leash, or indoors. He has 2000 square meters of yard to run and play, which the other dogs do all day long, and never once ,have they tried to run away. I give up.

Samantha Dennett Huskies are runners. That is the breed and there is nothing you can do about it except have 6 ft chain link fences and/ or keep the dog with you at all times when outside and not off leash either. On leash. And some huskies can learn to climb chain link so rollers can be put at the top so they can’t pull themselves over. Other than that, the dog has to stay inside when you are away or in a fully enclosed outdoor kennel with chain link roof.

@SoSeriouslySirius
@SoSeriouslySirius 3 года назад
@@lilyrose5947 they are not ideal for long term use or even use at all. Various reasons as to why but the geist is if dropped while stretched , dogs are more likely to run if they are being chased by the lead retracting. These types of leashes can also cause damaging wounds
@SoSeriouslySirius
@SoSeriouslySirius 3 года назад
From a website: 10 Reasons Not to Use a Retractable Leash: 1: The length of retractable leashes, some of which can extend up to 26 feet, allows dogs to get far enough away from their humans that a situation can quickly turn dangerous. A dog on a retractable leash is often able to run into the middle of the street, for example, or make uninvited contact with other dogs or people. 2: In the above scenario, or one in which your pet is being approached by an aggressive dog, it is nearly impossible to get control of the situation if the need arises. It's much easier to regain control of - or protect -- a dog at the end of a six-foot standard flat leash than it is if he's 20 or so feet away at the end of what amounts to a thin string. 3: The thin cord of a retractable leash can break - especially when a powerful dog is on the other end of it. If a strong, good-sized dog takes off at full speed, the cord can snap. Not only can that put the dog and whatever he may be chasing in danger, but also the cord can snap back and injure the human at the other end. 4: If a dog walker gets tangled up in the cord of a retractable leash, or grabs it in an attempt to reel in their dog, it can result in burns, cuts, and even amputation. In addition, many people have been pulled right off their feet by a dog that reaches the end of the leash and keeps going. This can result in bruises, "road rash," broken bones, and worse. 5: Dogs have also received terrible injuries as a result of the sudden jerk on their neck that occurs when they run out the leash, including neck wounds, lacerated trachea, and injuries to the spine. 6: Retractable leashes allow dogs more freedom to pull at the end of them, which can look like aggression to another dog who may decide to "fight back." 7: The handles of retractable leashes are bulky and can be easily pulled out of human hands, resulting in a runaway dog. 8: Along those same lines, many dogs - especially fearful ones - are terrorized by the sound of a dropped retractable leash handle and may take off running, which is dangerous enough. To make matters worse, the object of the poor dog's fear is then "chasing" her, and if the leash is retracting as she runs, the handle is gaining ground on her - she can't escape it. Even if this scenario ultimately ends without physical harm to the dog (or anyone else), it can create lingering fear in the dog not only of leashes, but also of being walked. 9: Retractable leashes, like most retractable devices, have a tendency to malfunction over time, either refusing to extend, refusing to retract, or unspooling at will. 10: Retractable leashes are an especially bad idea for dogs that haven't been trained to walk politely on a regular leash. By their very nature, retractable train dogs to pull while on leash, because they learn that pulling extends the lead.

This video is very stupid because if you let you dog walk around the bushes were you live off course they will take of because it’s open field. Make sure your property has high fence around then leave your animal in your yard problem solved. This type of training is waste of time
