I'm training for the Montane Lakeland 50 by hiking with camping kit as well as the usual running about stuff. This was a hike in the UK's soggy, windy Peak District in February, trying to find the motivation to do one more hill rep. Have you trained for ultras with hiking too? Let me know in the comments below.

Its a lovely area that, and easy to find hills to train on.

Very similar training for me. Doing my first ultra 54km in September. Walked the Camino Frances 800km in April/May and then ran a bit before I was down for two weeks sick. Back tomorrow, hopefully I can run without coughing! Next week hard day hiking and week after some hiking camping along the route. Gonna train with lots of walking to get back my strong Camino legs. Thanks for your inspiration!

Oh argh I feel your pain! So annoying to get sick but need to be patient don't we. Good luck for your first ultra! Have you seen my coach Tim Pigott's playlist on here? ru-vid.com/group/PLyZ16LRfpz0DZf7ieoLiq0145r_JDp62t Fantastic unmissable advice from him. Also available on the WGR podcast so you can listen on the run too. Best of luck! Claire

Well done! I've been there and the little voices are quite hard to silence. You did great 🙂

Thanks Severine! Very kind of you to say, it was mainly the thought that I'd driven all that way to some hills that made me make the most of it! I couldn't drive back without giving it a bit more welly! :)

Great topic! I'll be going on a 6 day hike with my brother this summer right at the start of my planned marathon training season.

That's great! I found that a 5-6 day continuous effort is really good training. I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.

Well done for not bailing and driving home early. Good mental toughness there! Curious what shoes you chose for this adventure?

Always hike stretches of my training runs, especially the long ones. Last year I went back to ultras after an accident and trained my first post-injury race almost entirely by hiking, speed-hiking, or very slow jogging.

Awesome, it's a great way to train isn't it, must do more of this

Definitely live in a hilly area. It's why I'm mostly run roads and not a steep hilly incline for a daily run!
