Lucas Botkin goes over how to train in an indoor range with handguns. While indoor range training isn't necessarily exciting, there's still a lot you can work on.
WarHammer1911A1 you should listen the dandy has gotten some dam good training from a real shooter. I doubt military or police. He has been taught right!
Lol I live in a state where I can have more than 10 rounds but all 3 of my pistols have 8-10 round mags lol. At least with my glock 48 I do have some metal15 round mags too but I don't use or carry them since they wear the mag release down faster. I could just swap in my metal mag release if I wanted to run the 15 rounders tho. At least with my AR and AK I have 30-40 round mags
Note to self for range day. 1. Accuracy, small target- slow fire. Shoot close then go far. 2. Work from compress ready, find sight quickly then follow through then reset. 3. Grip. Focus on grip. Diagnose grip while shooting. 4. Trigger work. Work the slack and use prefer surface of finger. Don’t pin trigger, pull then release quickly back to wall then fire. No need to work on accuracy. 5. Back to grip. Rapid fire, again diagnose grip while firing. Shoot only as long as you can see sight.
Where are you located? I'm in the bay area and there are outdoor ranges within a 1 hour drive of SF, and there are a few BLM owned areas that allow shooting in the state where you can run and gun. Hope you had a happy freedom week, btw :D
BLM land in San Diego area is more common in southern CA if you’re around there. I’m in the San Bernardino/riverside area and it’s damn near impossible finding BLM land as Riverside has outlawed the use of BLM for some reason.
It’s about time a high influencer like yourself does some indoor videos like this. Majority of us have no choice but to be indoors... only to dream of an outdoor range like yours lol. Thank you 🙏
@@28godux yeah but the ones we typically have access to are basically an indoor range just outside. No rapid fire, you stay in your lane which means no movement or running around, you shoot in increments and then the bell rings and everyone stops shooting and checks targets. It’s very limiting. I would love to have a range like Lucas shoots at
In southern missouri and there's thousands of acres of public land we can shoot on... many lake dams and huge rock piles just sitting there waiting for hot lead.
I would say the BIGGEST problem at an indoor range is getting flagged by idiots. Happened to me twice 2 days ago. The guy was behind the firing bays loading a pistol with his finger on the trigger. Had to shout at him and he got very offended but I didn’t feel like taking a .22lr to the gut. But since I have started using Trex Arms targets, my indoor range trips have become much more productive than checking function and zeroing. So thanks for that!
@@ivancorey7389 Just because they can have their own rules doesn't mean they're not stupid. If I started a range and I disallowed shooters over 40, would you be okay with that?
Lucas, Thank you. Many of us cannot load our guns in the back of the truck. THIS video is a step up. I and many are stuck shooting indoors with no draw or rapid fire. Great video. More with these hurdles considered. Thank you!
This is good shit man! Being in Law enforcement you would expect stuff like this be taught but it's up to us to train on our own time. This really motivated me and gave me some stuff to work on. I will share this video, hopefully it motivates my coworkers as well. 👍
When I was with the Nashville Tennessee police back in 1990, those particular drills were rarely tought and weren't that strict, but afterI moved to the feds, we spent hours on these exact particular drills daily, especially the U.S. Air Marshals
A woman just said that there are a few lines targeting the 2nd Amendment in that huge bill meant to help Ukraine about to be passed. I have no way of knowing how to fact-check that and had hoped one of you would. if it is true, you need to contact your state rep ASAP.
If you really think about it, we are machines. If we do something or train enough, our bodies start automatically performing that task when the correct conditions are met to trigger the muscle memory. Like any computer, you click on something, like an app app on a phone or browser on a PC, your computer automatically goes through the steps to launch the app or browser and do what you asked of it. The parallels are amazing if you sit and think about it. Or, ya know, Lucas is just a terminator sent from the future to teach us all the gun skills we'd need to fight the robot uprising. 🤔
I literally just came back from the range 3 hours ago ... But yes please more content like for Californians . Not all of us live by or near the desert . Thank you for the making of this video!
I've been using medium sized post it notes for my target at 7 yards. To me that works out very well, instead of dishing out $1/target. These drills have been my training since I've bought my first gun. Thanks for sharing this video!
@@bluyetiinc7553 took my first USPSA match then dozens more last year after finally mustered the motivation to do it. I've been consistently slightly above the middle of the pack locally. I'd say somewhere between lower B class or upper C. I sucked at every classifier lol I'd say it's working really well and if I doubled down on dry firing more, I would've been at a better spot.
Many thanks for the great tips. I’m an old dog learning new tricks, and your tips have helped me improve dramatically in the last four range sessions. Surprised both my son, a good shooter, and a range officer friend. Makes me feel good too.
You actually made me excited to go to the range again. The most practical range I have access to is an indoor range which makes trips few and far between. Thanks for this. (PS: My wallet hates you now)
I appreciate your ability to convey ideas simply. Thank you for the well articulated info; also for reinforcing the fact that you don't need fancy targets to get fancy results :)
I have been shooting since I was eight years old but know there is always something to be learned by watching someone like you . The Military did a very good job of training me for Special Forces but the local police department had almost no training back in the 60's . Actually l wound up training those in our group of new officers . We didn't even have a formal academy back in those day's. The information you provide is so important l believe .
I can get to the indoor range any day of the week: it's pretty much around the corner from my house. Nearest outdoor ranges are over an hour away, so this actually helps. I always wondered what I could do besides just tightening my shot patterns.
This is the best and most informative shooting video I have seen. No one rolling around pretending to be John Wick, just solid practical advice. Thank you.
My range supplies the paper plates. I then use those nickel sized colored coding labels for a bullseye.. Find them in the stationary section. 300 for two bucks or so. Cheap shooting.
A woman just said that there are a few lines targeting the 2nd Amendment in that huge bill meant to help Ukraine about to be passed. I have no way of knowing how to fact-check that and had hoped one of you would. if it is true, you need to contact your state rep ASAP.
Another extremely informative video from the trex himself. I’ve found over the years that as I watch and listen to your advice my skill has improved. Thanks
The guy who usually trains me is a retired green beret, teaches SWAT for the city and state, is a badged deputy, and does occasional work for “government agencies”. He teaches to spend most of your time point shooting at full size targets. He said that in all of his close range combat with pistol or rifle, he can’t remember ever looking at his sights.
Great stuff Lucas, thanks for the excellent video. I only shoot outside where I can do whatever I want, and sometimes it’s easy to overlook the fundamentals. I need to do all these drills more than I need to run around, as fun as that is. Thanks again!
Thank you for talking about the draw. so many people focus on clearing a holster quick but forget you have to hit something. Your compressed ready to sight picture I think is the most important thing to have dialed in.
Here mind you is the kind of lesson I thrive for at RU-vid! So practical, comprehensive and simple to grasp for a wet-behind-the-ears handgun novice like me.This young sharpshooter can save me a bundle in range class fees--such a great shooter and instructor! Thanks a lot!
Dude, I've watched numerous pistol grip videos on youtube, and experimented with most of them, and I've found that the type of grip you present really works well for me. Thank you so much for making this vid.
@@MrBigjoe2400 Yes. There are people that do that. They are also completely insufferable cunts, even when you call them out on it. It's like it's your fault they shot at your target.
Did you not hear him say it was $1 per target? I don’t know about you but I’m always looking to save some money. So I’ll gladly shoot your target from my lane! 🤣
I’m a new subscriber and I gotta say, your channel is the best. I’ve watched your “how to shoot a pistol in 10 min” and now this segment. This has helped me grow as a novice gun owner and looking forward to learn more on fundamentals and consistency from your channel. Keep it up, I’m taking notes...
Thanks Lucas! Your videos are really informative and beneficial to guys like me who are just getting started shooting seriously. Keep up the awesome work!
Thank you for some wonderful training tips Lucas! Your a good man for sharing your knowledge and skills with us, hopefully helping us become more proficient shooters!
Lucas -- thank you so much to you and your crew for taking the time to contribute your knowledge. I think it's "especially special" that you are so young, with so much skill and yet also have a great talent to be able to share that with others. Keep up the great work and the positive contributions for sure you will have a great impact on the self defense world in your lifetime. Can you share sometime skills for those of us CCW people who carry smaller guns, such as the G26, 43, Shield, P365 and all the rest. But for sure I would like to see you talk about the G26. Many thanks, God Bless and all the best.
Fabulous presentation and editing! I watched it several times and took notes. For me, this is one of the most important vids about optimizing one's range time that I've seen.
I save alot of your videos and watch them again whenever I start to get sloppy at the range. You provide some of the best content on the interweb, thank you sir and keep up the fantastic work
Great video! You’ve definitely given me some insight for the range. I’ve felt lost at the range as far as what to do next and what to focus on. I dry fire at least three days a week. I’m a new gun owner and learning a lot.
Used this video for inspiration today. Smaller targets at closer range, focusing on the trigger wall. Super effective stuff and I can't thank you enough - I watch your newer videos but even the old stuff pops back into suggestions. Keep up the good work as always.
Hey Lucas, I found this video very helpful for variations during indoor. I'm from the Caribbean and T REX has a best presentation of vids and equipment that I Believe is great to follow. All the best.
Awesome info, it's great you put these videos together for people who don't have the same opportunities we do. Love what you are doing for the community of people who want to be able to protect themselves and others.
Very useful and straight forward training content, the way you commentate throughout the vid keeps the interest to the end, always good to watch and take away info to practice with.
Love the great suggestions I'm taking this to the range with me. Would be interesting to see a moderate or inexperienced shooter beside you to see what Doing It Wrong works like
My personal advice for doing reloads in an indoor range is to bring a basket to catch your falling mags. If you can adjust the bay table lower than you, put the box and make sure it's large enough to prevent your dropped mags from bouncing. The last thing you want is to have your empties bounce into the range and you bothered the whole room to fish for it.
I've started using my range bag on the table to practice mag changes. It's still a bit slower(because I have to be deliberate on *where* I drop it), but it's better than nothing.
@@cooperpayne So far this year, I've shot about 30 matches of at *least* 5 stages each. And I've only done 2 or 3 retention reloads. Considering how infrequently I have to do them, my practice time is probably better spent on other stuff... 🙂
Great tip on nit pinning the trigger. From where I was when I started that was a huge improvement. But now I just keep growing. I will practice this this week.
I seriously just watched this whole video sitting on the toilet. My wife accused me of watching porn and I said no it's just Lucas from Trex Arms and she was like "Oh." Keep the videos coming TRex👍
Thank you Lucas I’m learning a lot from your videos I very much appreciate everything you do and say please keep up the fantastic work you are doing 😊 May God Bless You & Your Family Always 🙏🏾👼🏽😇
ya good video bro, I'm impressed by your knowledge and also your communication of said knowledge. Also, you show what you're talking about very well too....like I said...good video. Thanks
@@ayylmao5121 Even stranger is that I was only able to be at the range because I could get a buddy to join me...they don't allow singles to RENT if by yourself...insurance regs won't allow it. It seems that over the period of five years, three depressed souls decided to off themselves on the ranges, and the insurance leeches decided they weren't going to cover those sorts of injuries. So even though I've been a dozen times, they now require me to bring a moving target with me :-}
ColdCanuck50. are you talking about Target Masters in Milpitas California? out in Dublin there is a store called Guns Fishing & Other Stuff it has a range and they allow double taps
I love this page!!! Just got my first pistol Hellcat Pro on Thursday went indoors and put 100 down range. Felt great compared to my dad glock 21 .45!!! I’ve learned so much about the trigger and how to control it.. keep up the great videos
I learned a lot from this information! In my area, there are only indoor ranges open to the public. As you stated, they don’t allow you to draw from the holster and no rapid firing. As a woman and new to shooting, I was able to take a look at what I am doing incorrectly. Fortunately, today I had the range to myself so I didn’t feel rushed. Thanks for the info!
My family is loaded with vets and cops. My dad was a WWII sailor. I never heard him drop and FBomb. I can’t even let my 10 year old watch most of these guys. He’s just getting into shooting an AR. Lucas, Lovell, and a couple more get the most air time here
