I really appreciate the idea of establishing the desire to work with me before worrying about every little micro thing. It makes perfect sense not to worry about a few small undesirable behaviors until you get that macro behavior first.

Great video. This idea of macro vs micro really clicks with me and seems very important to keep in mind. I love the simple yet game-changing tips like this. Like in another video from another channel he talks about teaching your puppy to focus. While it seems obvious and simple, it's not something I would have thought about, yet can make a world of difference.

Some great, simple insights here. 'Simple' but vital, and keeping the big picture/engagement viewpoint on which to build seems like the most telling combination I've experienced, after a few years of training my own gundogs. Great teaching style too.

It's funny you mentioned the "puppy voice"...I found my dog always listened to my daughter spot on, and she talked in a higher pitched voice...so I tried it with my Mastiff Pitbull mix, and it works wonders...I think it's a more positive sound to the dog than a deep command....and they just seem to respond to positive reinforcement versus stern commands...like it you said, it makes it fun...

The dogs trainers show on their channels never seem to be like really inexperienced pups which are basically nuts - rolling around, chewing the lead, smelling the ground/grass, picking up feathers or slugs, freezing when the hear a car, chasing after a bird in a tree etc etc.

That was a really nice and useful video and I liked the macro vs. micro issues explanation! However, I have a couple of questions: 1) The training in your video takes place in an environment without distractions, i.e. other people walking, cars, dogs, etc. In such situations, it is much more difficult for my 5 month old lab to focus on me. So, even if it might be considered a micro issue, it is important and disturbs the whole idea of keeping the puppy engaged to you. How would you handle that? 2) You say 'don't bother correcting minor issues'. What if those minor issues are dangerous for the puppy's health? TO be more specific, my lab puppy has the tendency to eat a bunch of stuff from the ground when we are on a walk. Some are just leaves, which are thought harmless (at least eating one or two), but others are plastic stuff and litter that inconsiderate people throw. We have practiced the 'let go' command and she does let go most of the times, but sometimes I will have to take it out of her mouth. How could this issue be incorporated in the approache you showed in your video? I would reaaally appreciate your advice on these two things, as it's been quite hard for me as a first-time dog owner! :)
@willathertoncaninetraining
@willathertoncaninetraining 3 года назад
Hey Christian, thanks for watching! With regards distractions it's all routed in your relationship with your dog. If they see you as their clear leader they will focus on you no matter where they are. Remember your pup is only 5months and it can take some dogs longer than others, just remember consistency is key! With regards to the eating things we have a video coming out soon looking into this question so keep an eye out on your channel 😊

A quick one here, any remediation that can be done with American Staffordshire Terrier when heel-walking and another dog is seen? If that other dog is walking with not signs of attention towards my dog - its all fine. If a slightest motion or head turn towards my dog, he starts to jump around and literally scream. I would assume it's excitement and hype,but would love to understand how to tackle this type of behavior to nor embarrass myself and have a calm walk in park/public places etc. Thanks!

@WillAthertonCanineTraining How long are your average training sessions. I do obiedance throughout the whole day randomly but I usually do 2 hours of exercise per day and a hour of leash training twice a week. I don't care if my dog is miliantly trained but I do want to have a good relationship and to make her not run off/ leave it when I want her to leave it. She is doing very well but im preparing for the teenage phase. I'm gonna have to up it then I think to keep her on track. Your how to deal with teenage dogs is making me question my schedule a bit. I should probably make time to do a bit more after she hits 8 months. She is 5 months now. Sorry for asking with help to make a schedule lolol I know your a busy dude.

I've noticed in a couple of these videos the positive reinforcement you can provide when the puppy does what you want to follow you and look up to you with the change of directions. When I've tried this though, I have found its possible for the puppy to be stubborn and want to continue on its chosen direction or sometimes change direction, follow you and accept the praise, but then bolt ahead and pull into the changed direction. These videos are less clear on what to do it the puppy doesn't give you a behaviour to praise initially.

My puppy has no interest in me or treats when out walking. He just sniffs, pulls and stops. If I use anymore high pitch voice people will think I’m Barry Gibb.

I hope this problem has improved. Your dog is likely uncomfortable with the environment or is more driven by environment than you or food. See if play or freedom gets some engagement if it hasn't best wishes

Love this, it doesn’t matter how many puppies you have, we forget each time how to train and support our new puppies.

What do I do with a 2 year old Doberman that slams into me and leans on me when I call her to come? When I got her at 20 months she wouldn’t recall at all. She’s 2 now and I’m getting recall in the house beautifully but in the garden where she has room to run, she slams into me, doesn’t sit but leans on me. I used lots of praise and made it fun to come but she’s a little too excitable. If I lower the level she ignores me. Outside at the beach she doesn’t recall until getting tired so we have to go out at night where there are no other dogs or people and have her on a 60m rope. She needs the exercise otherwise her behaviour deteriorates. Walking on a lead is good with prong but pulls on a flat collar or slip lead.

does your dog slam into walls and cars, probably not. Become something he does not want to slam into... a knee usually works. You have trained your dog not to come when you say "come" (or whatever your word is) by saying it when to cannot enforce it. Pick a new command (like "here") and a new method. Have him on a leash/line always (or else do NOT use the new word). Do not feed him in a bowl, carry his meal with you. Throughout the day, with your hand on the leash call him, put one kibble in your hand held with the thumb and wait for him to touch your hand to release it. If he is hard to catch when loose, add a collar grab before you release the kibble. Its very hard to retrain, but dobies are super smart. Just be 100% consistent. Good luck

when the video is speeding up and you're walking back and forth, what are you saying to her to keep her focused engaged with you? outside of snacks, i'm not sure how to keep my pup engaged for longer than a minute.

Quality video and outstanding mindset. Very informative and the macro vs micro explanation helps so much with the mindset needed for a puppy.

Oh Lordy, my pup is 12 weeks old and I have been focusing on the micro problems not the bigger picture. Only had him 2 weeks, hopefully not to late to go back :)

Love your videos. I found you through Tom Davis :) is there a minimum age the puppy should be for use of a slip lead? I love the reminder to not focus on the jumping and enthusiasm when puppy gets to you. I get too caught up on trying to iron out all the “problems” from the get go. Baby steps. Thank you so much for all the content. You’re really gifted

I have started long line recall with my 13-week puppy and it's going really well with high value treats but was giving them every time - thanks for pointing out the 'slot machine' thing!
