You can literally do anything to get your dog's attention. As long as you're distracting them from behaviors you do not want them to have that's all that matters. That's why Cesar Millan is as successful as he is he does not use treats or running around and rolling around in the grass he uses touch. People say he's abusive I think even this man that does these videos may have said that in the past, but I disagree when he touches those dogs they do not Yelp in pain or make any noises like they are hurt at all. And if you watch groups of dog when they are together that's exactly how they interact and let other dogs know what they want or don't want. You don't see other dogs showing another dog what they want or don't want by running around and rolling around in the grass and making funny noises.

So you think this guy is good at his job? I am sorry to say but he clearly don't know much about dog behaviors and what leverage to use to have the dog listen. On this particular dog which is pulling a lot on the leash, first thing you have to do is to remove the harnest because this tool is making the dog wanna pull, it's like a game for the dog, to show how strong he is. That's why huskies or other breed who pull a cart in the snow have a harnest and not a regular leash. A harnest gives the dog the opportunity to use the maximum of his legs power and strenght. In a busy environment as a street with car, he should have switched to a regular leash, tight and as close to the dog's ears as possible. And when the dog is trying to pull the leash, a quick "pop" to correct the dog while saying the command you wanna use to have your dog on your side will work and make him stop pulling. I guarantee you this would work faster and better than whatever this man is saying. This guy don't know his job, his energy and his constant talking just makes him like he knows what to do... That's what we call a scammer.

@@i.3661 Zak is a terrible trainer. But harnesses don't cause pulling, so you're an idiot too
@pothszabina
@pothszabina Год назад
@@i.3661 Maybe he is just a force free trainer. Although I agree with you: This type of treat training is just making the dog full and tired; that's why the problem behavior reduced by the end of the video. If the guy just stood there by the cars and waited out him get tired, same result. We also should not forget that the dog went on this walk as pretty tired already from playing in the yard. Not everyone can do this. The walk itself is the exercise to a lot of dogs. That is why a structured walk is the best to do: the dog heels loosely with no sniffing and no potty breaks, just walking by your side, then you switch to sniffing, peeing, pooping and playing in a safe area, long leash recommended at the initial stages. Then you go switch to a loose heel. This way the dog will respect you and the relationship is much better, clearer communication.

@theobserver9498
@theobserver9498 5 лет назад
@Redrooster Got a few years before that would look right! If I'm spending that kind of money on the dog it should be a little faster so the dog can stretch her legs. I'd just let her go in a field but she is has an odd mutation that makes her fur like cotton candy. She was born to tangle and mat up and the poor thing is a pure bred hunting dog. (that's why I say its a mutation cause not only did my past dogs of that breed not have fur that thin but nobody would breed a hunting dog that way........ TT ) Whilst I was going slow when I crashed the intention was to go faster eventually but I'm not a good enough trainer I guess. (probably why I was watching such videos.)

I love that Zak shows the process with all the failures because it gives insight into the difficulties of training a high energy dog like Brutus. We see that every tiny little move the dog makes in the right direction is a win, and that the process of training is a slow one. Antonio A. I am not a dog expert I barely know anything about them but I don’t think they are trying to get the dogs energy out! Zak wants to help the dog to survive the environment in a much more comfortable manner! And I think by the end of the video that dog seemed much more calmer not that it’s stop getting interested in the world but positively reacting to situation! Sorry if I am wrong ! Just thought to share my opinion! And if u r saying that the dog is exhausted by the end and that’s why it didn’t do anything! That’s kinda what u want. Once ur dog starts to understand (if that couple start doing it as a routine ) that the people don’t want him to get over excited when something passes by it will gradually stop! It’s natural if u play with ur dog (an example) before getting him to walk he will be exhausted and he won’t bark at those moving objects ! If this is a routine it will gradually stop 🛑

My dog used to pull the leash like crazy and I thought I would never be able to take him anywhere. Then, I started exercising him more (for example, playing fetch before taking him on a walk) and he started walking fine! No pulling whatsoever. It took time however, the more I took him out into the world, the better he was with walking on leash. He's also an extremely anxious dog, so taking him out more has made him more friendly towards other humans and dogs. Don't give up hope!

We trained our first dog to not pull on a lead by just stopping every time he pulled and he quickly picked up on it. This also helped when we got our second and third dog because they automatically followed suit knowing they’d also get a treat occasionally.

It might take a while but eventually he will learn that when you say his name and get his attention it's a good thing and he'll stop and listen to you. Don't let him pull if you can. Just stop and wait until he calms down. Make his walk as annoying as possible if he is misbehaving. Of course if he gets too frustrated dont push it. Reward heavily at first for good behevaior. Mariel, dont be a friend, be a parent. Walk with the dog at your side, he is walking with you, he shouldnt lead you. Leaders are in the front. If a dog misbehaves, let them know its not on. Dont just give subtle hints, suggestions or plead. You call the shots. Keep in mind you have an american bulldog. Do not let the dog think it has to be the one to protect the family. Thats your job. In short, while these 'nice' distracting tecniques in the vid should be employed, they should not totally replace you actually controlling the dog. The dog in the video doesnt even know its wrong to chase cars. Make him know.

Clickers are awful. Cause a dog is so used to the clicker it’s hard to get them off the clicker in the future. The point is these People need to spend more time with their animal. The dog needs more than just “a walk”. The harness they are using is awful and encourages the pulling. So they should add exercise and use a gentle leader as a harness which controls the pulling

The easiest way to Train a puppy to walk on a leash is by just stopping every time they pull on the leash. do not move until it stops and comes and sets beside you with out saying a word or giving it any attention until it calms down and slack is in the leash. then pet them and talk in quiet calm voice letting them know you approve and continue no dog wants to stand still when they realize you stop if they tug they will stop tugging on their own.

@@swampy9088 treats! and if your dog is not listening to your voice, try a bell to catch its attention and then work with that. Do not move, and speak harshly (NO!) when he pulls the leash, and then try to walk by holding the leash really close to you and giving it treats and praises every single time he does the right thing ("good boy!"). It takes a lot, loooot of time and patience, but there's no such thing as an untrainable dog. Do this every day. Repetition is key.

I think the most important thing you said, and what gets lost on a lot of people, was that a walk, and training a dog to walk, are two different things. Too many people get discouraged because they go out for a 30 minute walk and all they do is struggle with the dog. They have to go into a walk with the mindset to tolerate, as you very well put it, the bad behavior until the proper walk can be taught. It takes a lot of time and patience, especially with a dog like Brutus, but it definitely works.

I know my point of view is not the popular, latest fad, but if a trainer uses the Principles of Conditioning; i.e. Operant Conditioning as explained by B.F. Skinner, a dog learns much quicker. Using both positive and negative reinforcements actually works and is NOT inhumane. But, go ahead and keep using the PETCO ( I got my Internet training certificate) techniques and keep banging your head against a wall. Two other things: 1.) The dog chooses what is a reward to him/her, not the trainer. Trying to force a toy (company) you have a sponsorship with is wasting time, and 2.) The reason the dog doesn't listen to you is because you have yet to establish a proper rapport with him. Why would he listen to you? He doesn't even know you. Luckily, you chose a breed that wants to please everyone by nature. Hey, but don't listen to me. I have only trained dogs for the military, Florida Dept. of LE, and civilians starting in the late 1970's.

Thanks so much for this video - I have been struggling with my Border Collie cross for 5 years. She does exactly this, and it resulted in me giving up on her. I discovered your videos by accident, and it has improved my relationship with her immensely. This method really works. After quite a few sessions we are still just walking up and down the street in front of my house, but at least there are moments where she focuses really well and she doesn't lunge at every single car. I have watched every single one of your leash walking videos and each one gave me some new perspective on how best to handle her. It isn't a quick fix, and it takes a lot of work and energy especially after a long day at the office. But it does work, where nothing I've tried over the years got through to her at all. So thank you for giving me the hope that one day we will be able to walk calmly down the street!

I'll echo what Yvette said as we too have a Border Collie mix. We too almost gave up on him and considered giving him back to the group because I just cannot physically handle a lunging, pulling dog. Every time I see a new leash pulling video, I watch it. We too had to train Finley fetch and he loves it now. We started with treat rewards but now he does it free of charge. ;) He's really a very intelligent dog. It just takes time and patience and fortunately we had a trainer help us with some of his larger issues. Keep the videos coming Zak!

If you break a hip because you were afraid to correct according to the dog's size and understanding the price is a bit high. Dogs are so clever and can learn how to behave in minutes if lead with common sense. Personally I can't find any here. Life isn't force free. The dog's natural world isn't force free. Nah, I think your tips for training a wild dog are a bit too weak and slow, it'll take the owners forever to train their dog like that, week, maybe months! (I train new and old dogs to walk with me, stop at intersections and wait for me the FIRST DAY! Old dogs with bad habits from their owners might take a casual week, but it's fairly simple!) I think you have to be more assertive, more like an alpha dog to them or more like a parent dog. Your a human trying to teach human tricks! You have first work on your communication, and then being "fun". I don't think that's appropriate, maybe later. You also use treats, but then you have to rely on treats to teach dogs, that can get expensive, and also your dog expects treats everytime they do something "right", soon you'll have to break them from the bad habits of treats for everything!

Zak I got my puppy yesterday, but he's a beagle/golden doodle mix and he has floppy beagle ears, so all training is harder for him. What should I do?

Its been nearly a year! It would be awesome to know how Brutus is doing on leash training :) I look after a Kelpie girl, she is now two years old. She has been with me for a month, and after about a week we started having problems. Of course, she is a generally high energy dog. I took her for walks three times a day, she would bark, jump and it felt like she was on a different planet at times. She happens to know and love fetch, after I started playing fetch a couple of times a day, and being very positive about ANY progress she made on leash, we are now doing much better :) I bring a tug rope on walks, if I see her tention level rise(Im getting good at that, and HER level, not the leash), we play tug and it works wonders for her to blow off some steam :) Then we move on. She is not allowed to pull, I always stop and have her look at me before moving on. Every other step in the beginning, no we have long periods where there is no tention on the leash. Often rewarded with treats. AND we clickertrain! My point is: THANK YOU ZAK! :) Will give her back to her owner in a weeks time, and I have learned so much from her.

seria j.a when my golden retriever was a puppy, i socialized the crap out of her. My friends offered to doggy sit and kids came over. Maybe try a dog park or ask family to bring their dogs and let them play. Maybe it’s just my dog I’m not sure but she was never aggressive with a dog or person ever, love her and I wish good luck to you, just be patient and keep working on it.

See a good trainer, get an outlet for his drive so he can be happy maybe consider scent work, obedience, agility that sort of thing. For the growling etc you really need to correct it treat training can help as part of it but the correction is necessary if he's going off at people correct hard then reward when he stops. I have a high drive working line German shepherd and found a prong collar used correctly with rewards for appropriate behaviour and lots and lots of repeating the correct behaviour fixed those kinds of problems very fast. But if your dog is a psycho it primarily needs an outlet. Look for a good balanced trainer or dog sport club with good reviews and work with them. You'll find you love the sport as much as your dog and committing to a system and getting feedback about the timing of both rewards and corrections will improve your bond infinitely.

Really loving these videos! I like that you don't only show when things go well, too (it's nice to see that things don't always go well instead of having that edited out; it's reassuring to see that it does take time and baby steps instead of just reading about it or hearing about it).

This dog should be handled by a real trainer before he kills someone. How can you allow a dog to attack a car? Why should someone DIE because of your dog and lazy owners who think that cookies or a toy will fix sth.

Our 10 mo old ACD is unwalkable right now. Very frustrating. She has boundless energy and is so attracted to distractions, anything with wheels or four small legs. Energy level is a 10!

I had a super hyper blue heeler that went crazy on walks. I started walking with my hot green chucks every walk and when I saw her focus on things I knew would trigger her pulling I shook my shoe in front of her and said catch the green shoe. It worked so well for her.

good video but a prong collar gives pressure evenly around the whole neck and it was built NOT to hurt them and DOES NOT choke them at all unlike regular dog collars

Love this! I have a 4 month old boxer puppy with very HIGH ENERGY! haha shes a handful and seriously needs to learn not to pull! She is mainly exploring the world still but also gets scared of dogs barking that she cant see or loud noises and runs and pulls in the opposite direction as soon as she gets scared! It's so hard to get her not to run and to either sit and wait and or keep walking but we are working on it! Thanks for the great videos!

Yeah, my 4-mo Rat Terrier does similar! They are learning which sounds or objects, etc are safe, or not safe, etc! A big part of socialization! Everything is new to her! Try to stay Calm! Make sure not to overload her with too many stressful events at once! Also, if u get too stressed, she will pick up on that! Change Direction, distract, come back later (or in another day) when she is calmer to what upset her! Slowly desensitize! Longer walks and play times should help, also, with her energy! Some pups need more than 20 - 30 min at the time! She will calm down as she gets older, every 2 years! You can try dog sports, such as agility or flyball, or pulling carts, also!
