THANK YOU for using a dog that's still in training instead of a dog that's been perfectly trained for 3+years like most of the other dog trainers i've seen on YT. That teaches us NOTHING. but what you did helps so much.

Imani Ross Zak George has a whole series on his new puppy to break it down. I think the reason a lot of dog trainers do that is because according to RU-vid analytics people get bored for videos that are too long. And people want to see the end of result

Omg this actually worked on my super hyper dozy dog! I had no hopes of this working with him but it did, not as quick as your dog but within 10 minutes. When I took the lead off, he jumped straight up, but I used the same technique and he quickly sat down. So SO amazing! Thank you so much! You have NO clue the amount of pain he's caused by jumping up cause he's a big dog, big paws, big claws, a lot of weight behind him so to get him to stop jumping so quickly is amazing! I know the problem isn't solved but in time, with this technique, I know it will and I am so excited. I don't usually comment on training videos but I just to!

This is such a good video - I love your presentation style and your message is so clear and positive. I am puppy raising a 'Mobility Dog' who will hopefully one day help someone in a wheelchair. She is less than 6 months old and is very jumpy (has poodle in her). I have been turning and ignoring (she then humps my legs because she always finds some enjoyment / element of play in every situation!). It has worked with my husband and I but not my daughter who is petite. Tying her up is such an obvious solution I hadn't thought of - it will be great for when my daughter gets home from work. I have tried having her on a leash, but I'm not as strong as a door and she sometimes still reaches my daughter and hurts her. Please keep up with your videos - they are fantastic.

By "real discipline" do you mean positive punishment? I base my training off of empirical research, not off of personal preferences, since that is the method that has gotten us technologies like computers, smart phones, electricity, etc... The scientific community agrees that positive reinforcement is more effective than positive punishment and is the most ethical choice. Check out peer-reviewed research articles to see what I mean!

This was really great. So many people teach getting your dog to sit and then reward, but my dog has just learned that okay if I jump up, Mom's going to get me to sit and then I get a treat. I've been trying to ignore her and that seems to be working better. My problem is now though that whenever I try and do tricks with her and I give her a cue she just lunges at my hand for the treat. If i ignore her she'll jump up from behind. I generally just take a break at that point because we're getting nowhere (and yes this is after exercise)

susan hanifin I have owned a Rottweiler and never found that I had to use a painful shock collar to train her not to jump. Whosoever would sayor do that has never owned or trained a dog. Rottweilers are smart dogs who do not need to be abused to learn behaviors that one may want. Shock collars are abusive

I hate shock collars! I admit i like slip leads (some call choke leads) but i only like them if they're used correctly so they don't hurt the dog. I don't like prong collars but they're better than shock collars.

I have a 6 months old Boston Terrier, which is notorious for jumping when excited. Typically when alone for an extended period of time or when strangers give her attention. We practice this exercise at home minus the leash. She has gotten so much better with us at home but with strangers is a whole different story. We pull on the leash, we hold her down, we tell her to sit nothing works.
@FACTAcademy
@FACTAcademy 7 лет назад
Oh that's a great point! Dogs are masters at noticing details, which makes them not so great at understanding that sitting is not just for mom/dad, it's for everyone. To them, a different person is a totally different situation, and most dogs won't understand unless you ask your friends to do this training with you. It just takes a few seconds once your dog has started to figure it out. The hardest part is finding friends who won't just give in and reward the jumping lol. The way we did it was to put our dog on leash when guests came over, and say "hey, if you don't mind would you just ignore her until she sits?" I will say, some of my friends just couldn't figure it out so I put my dog away when they came over until my dog had more opportunities to practice with other people ;P

This is so smart and very clear and simple. This method also doesn't rely on treats which is great because treats are expensive, and I also want my dog to _really_ learn and stick to the good behavior rather than just doing it momentarily for a treat. I'm going to start this with my boy. He's super sweet but he's also 70 pounds and will knock someone over by jumping on them.

I've had many pants, skirts and leggings ruined because of dogs jumping up and scraping their nails on me when I walk in a friend/relative's house. Not a plus if they've recently been outside in the mud. Also, if you're wearing shorts and there's no fabric between their nails and your skin, it hurts really bad. Please be responsible pet owners. It's not about punishing them for being excited, it's about directing their energy elsewhere.

Hi! Sorry about the extremely slow response time! Yes, I would recommend you have the dog tethered, leashed, or even just behind a baby gate the first several times a guest comes over. You will have to explain to them, as your dog is still learning, to stop petting and step back a bit if your pup jumps. Hope it helps!

This is a great "starter" method, however I have one gripe with it. When walking in the real world I as owner now become the "door" with the leash and do nothing regardless of what my dog does and everyone who greets us is supposed to be the "experienced dog trainer who knows exactly when to offer or withdraw attention". What happens is if the person we greet ignores my dog then my dog learns to sit for a few seconds and if that doesn't work, jump up on them. Then they get attention, positive or negative! The rest of the world has no idea how to train my dog. The problem is amplified in an off leash scenario. What I need is a method for the OWNER to train/reward/correct the proper greeting even if the greeter does all the wrong things.

Cool I hope it works for you and your pup! I actually do have a short playlist on teaching dogs to come when called: ru-vid.com/group/PLO2voKXXAZertF-mxrcqU0r5utq0F8M4Q The hardest part is really taking your time to teach them to LOVE it when you call their name, then you just practice it more and more difficult situations. I like to practice every day just by calling them during walks. I let them get distracted, then I call them and let them chase me while I run away. My dogs get so excited when I call them, which I'm grateful for because one of them actually escaped last year near a busy road and came running back as soon as I called her!

It's more then making waiting for the dog to sit. You are still rewarding him for his excited energy. The crying and whining that the dog is doing is excitement. You giving affection while he is in an excited state of mind will encourage the dog to stay in that excited state. It takes patience. Wait for the dog to be totally relaxed. Ears back, tail down or in the center. Mouth open and panting means the brain is beginning to relax. It takes time but it's the most effective way to stop your dog from jumping. Reward calm energy. Not excited energy. I learned all this from Cesar Millan

Lulu C but your little jumping chihuahuas can break the skin of a person who might be a hemophiliac who won’t be able to stop bleeding, snag the material of someone’s brand new clothes, frighten an autistic child, cause anxiety in a person with PSTD. You can see this list could go on and on.

Any age works! You don't need to wait until they are older. However, I do recommend you teach a really good "sit" before you try this. That makes it more likely that the dog will think about trying that behavior when you try this method.

This also works well with children want all your attention and when they have tantrums.. we do them a favor by ignoring the behavior and its common sense for most but not alot.

Seems to work! Does anyone know if it works long term? Like, when you come home, is your super excited dog applying what they learned or do you have to keep doing this all over again?

Hey, Madison. Good question! I will say that coming home from work is SUPER exciting, so I would recommend you practice this exercise but instead of using the tether, use the door. You can read more details at the bottom of my article about jumping: lovingpawsdogtraining.com/no-more-jumping/ With my dog, who is EXTREMELY excited when I get home, it actually only took about two weeks of consistent practice when I got home for her to glue her bottom to the ground. I haven't practiced that exercise in over a year with her, but she still glues her butt to the ground (usually her front paws are bouncing like crazy, which is really funny) when she wants me to say hello when I get home. The key is being consistent so your dog really believes that the fastest way to get you to say hi is to sit.
