In this tutorial, you will learn How to Transfer your Firefox Profile to a New Computer. When you buy a new computer, you will need to do a fresh install of Firefox.
This means that you will again need to customize your settings, add the bookmarks, save your passwords, and add your extensions. However, the good news is that you really don’t need to go through this whole customization process all over again.
You can save or backup your Firefox Profile and then transfer it to your new computer. This can save you a lot of time and frustration. Firefox saves all your data in a profile folder separate from the main folder where Firefox is installed.
In this tutorial, I will show you step-by-step how to export your Firefox Profile to an external USB flash drive and then transfer it to your new computer.

Anthony, I tried this on my upstairs computer where I transferred another from downstairs computer to upstairs computer with not all bookmarks from downstairs showing up . I tried it your way and looks like I now have all bookmarks thank you. I will erase the hard drive downstairs on the computer because of freezing issues and now install it bookmarks the way you suggested. The best I FOUND HERE ON RU-vid... THANK YOU!!!!

Great info! I would have had trouble following your comments without the graphics that show exactly where everything is and should be copied to. The only hiccup I ran into while copying was that a message popped up saying that 3-4 files couldn't be found. After retrying several times I simply hit the "ignore" option and the transfer to my flash drive went very smoothly. I've transferred everything to my new laptop and it seems to be there. The biggest things I wanted are my password and bookmarks and they apparently make the journey in one piece. Thanks loads for your tutorial on this!

Thank you for this nice clear video. I followed the instructions. All good on the old computer. On new computer, when I clicked "open folder" at the Profile Folder in Firefox Application Basics screen, I got the popup "Location is not available." When I use File Explorer to navigate to the profile folder listed in the Firefox Application Basics screen, I find that the folder does not exist (and I do have "show hidden files" turned on.) Suggestions? Thank you.

Hi William, sorry, I was out of town and was not able to respond to you earlier. I'm not sure if you've already figured things out. If not, generally the error "Location is not available." pops up due to permission reasons. First of all, make sure you're signed in as Administrator on the new computer. So, if you've created different profiles, then log into Windows 10 as Administrator. Also, do both the computers have the same version of Firefox? One other way to go to your Firefox profile is to copy & paste the following path into File Explorer (in the address bar top section) without the quotes. "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\" Hope this works for you!

@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho Год назад
Hi there, sorry, I could not respond earlier. I'm just catching up today with my RU-vid comments and questions. The error that you're getting in Windows 10 is due to the limitation with long path files exceeding 256 characters. I'm not sure if you already resolved the issue, if not... One way to deal with this is to zip the folder and then copy it to your USB flash drive and then to your new computer. Once on the new computer, you will need to unzip the folder and then transfer the files to the respective folder. Hope this helps...cheers!

This is different from how I did it last time; seems quicker. Does this also copy over extensions and custom hotkeys for those extensions? Basically will the new computer open Firefox EXACTLY like the old one did it? Do I need an account/to be logged in on Firefox to do it (never bothered with that)?
@AnthonyGodinho

Hi there, yes, it does copy the extensions as well. I personally don't use too many extensions. I think I only have 2 or 3, so I'm not sure about the custom hotkeys for extensions. @AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 2 года назад
Hi Lucian, if you want to transfer multiple Firefox profiles from one computer to another, you can do the following on your old computer. First make sure to close your Firefox browser: (1) Open File Explorer and type "%Appdata%" (without the quotation marks) in the address bar and hit enter; (2) right-click on the Mozilla folder and click Copy; (3) then plug in your USB flash drive and paste the Mozilla folder (this backs up your Mozilla folder). Once you do the above, go to your new computer and follow the steps below. First make sure to close your Firefox browser: (1) Plug in your USB flash drive (where you backed up your Mozilla folder); (2) right-click on the Mozilla folder and click Copy; (3) Open another instance of File Explorer and type "%Appdata%" (without the quotation marks) in the address bar and hit enter; (4) right-click on the Mozilla folder and click Delete; (5) finally, right-click on the Roaming folder and click Paste. Once you do the above, you can also log into your Firefox accounts on both computer and run Sync. Hope this works for you...cheers!

Hello, Anthony. Windows 10 is wanting me to upgrade to Windows 11 on my laptop, but I have read I'd lose Firefox and have to reinstall it from the Microsoft Store. Since this is not a new computer transfer, how do I transfer my profile to the new Firefox install? Even though it's the same computer, do I have to do your process with the USB drive--or can I save my profile folder on my desktop--or will my profile transfer automatically just by logging into the new Firefox install? I use it as my default browser, mostly using Google Chrome for maps, and never Microsoft Edge, so don't want to lose everything and have to start over. Thanks in advance for your time and attention! EP
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 2 года назад
Hello Elayne, ideally, even if you need to reinstall Firefox, it should generally store your profile on your current computer. However, just to be on the safer side, I would suggest backing up your Firefox Profile (on an external drive) like I showed you in this tutorial. Once you upgrade to Windows 11 and reinstall Firefox, log into your Firefox account and see of your current profile automatically transferred over. If not, then you can proceed with part 2 of this tutorial and manually transfer the Firefox Profile. Hope this makes sense and helps. Do let me know how it goes. Good luck!

@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho Год назад
You're welcome my friend, I'm glad this tutorial helped! If you have only a few desktop folders that you want to transfer from your old computer to your new computer, you can just copy those folders (from File Explorer, if you're using Windows 10) from your old computer and transfer them to the new computer. This is similar to the process I showed you in this tutorial. Once you do the above, you can then right-click on the specific folder (in File Explorer) and choose \Send To\Desktop. This will create a shortcut to the specific folder. You'll have to repeat this process for the other folders. On the other hand, if you want to transfer your desktop settings, folders, etc. from your old computer to your new computer, you can use the Sync feature in Windows 10. This can be found in the Settings app under \Accounts\Sync. For this you'll need to log into both computers using the same Microsoft account (for example, Hotmail or Outlook email). Hope this makes sense and helps...cheers!

@@dr.j6747 actually I thought so too, but Firefox will be supported up until september or something 2024. @Dezzyyx
@Dezzyyx 11 месяцев назад
Why not just use Sync? it includes most things. I'm also curious that by the time I need to do this (when I get new computer in maybe 1 year) Firefox will no longer support Windows 7, which means that my new computer will have the new version of FF while this one will still have the last supported Win 7 version of FF. I've seen mentioned that to do this trick both devices need to have matching version of Firefox, so in that scenario would it become an issue or what will I need to do?
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 11 месяцев назад
Hi there, yeah, in your case you will be using Windows 7 and most likely Windows 11. So it makes sense to only use the Sync option in Firefox rather than transferring the profile folder. When I transferred my Firefox profile, I did it from Windows 10 on both and they both had the same version of Firefox.
@Dezzyyx
@Dezzyyx 11 месяцев назад
@@AnthonyGodinho So if you get everything with the Sync option, why is there even a need for the profile folder trick? Is my question
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 11 месяцев назад
@Dezzyyx for most part, yes, Sync will do the job. I personally prefer using the Firefox Profile folder method because for one, I have the folder as a backup. Secondly, I don't think Sync transfers all the customization in Preferences done via "about:config" (configuration editor). Also, I personally don't like Sync (other than using it the first time when transferring the Firefox Profile) since there is no way to properly control things given that there is no central computer that you can set up to be the master. I have my Sync turned off always.

What if you have multi-container containers ?
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 8 месяцев назад
Hi Azad, do you mean multi-account containers? If so, I'm assuming you're using the Firefox add-on? I've personally never used multi-account containers, so I can't say for sure if it will transfer with your Firefox profile. However, I do know that add-ons are included in the Firefox profile, so most likely they will be transferred. What I would suggest that once you transfer your profile, just use Firefox Sync on both computers.

@APH yeah, I can totally understand and relate to what you're saying. You're right, the Sync can sometimes mess things up. Hi Gary, yes, I mentioned twice that you need to closed your Firefox browser - once during the backup of the profile, and then again during the transfer of the profile. In both cases, you're not in the middle of the steps. The main reason, in both cases, you have Firefox open only because you want to get to the Profile folder. After you do so, you need to close the browser because it won't allow you to override the profile unless you've closed Firefox. Hope this makes sense and helps...cheers!

Gary, which step are you in right now? Is this the first step where you backup of the Firefox Profile folder? If so, as soon as you click on the OPEN FOLDER button (in Firefox), it will take you to File Explorer. What you need to do next is go back to the Firefox browser and click on the "X" in the top-right corner of the browser.

hi, on the official firefox page, they say that profiles need to have the same name in order to use the method you described in your video. btw, this is the best video that explains the process, so thank you for that. so, do names of the profiles really matter now? or is it just the content of the profile folders. i plan to upgrade to a new pc, so i am atm on windows 7 and should have windows 11 on a new pc, will the same process work?
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 2 года назад
@gricnime hi there, you're welcome! I'm glad this tutorial helped. I believe that applies only if you're restoring the profile on the same computer. If you're transferring your Firefox profile to a new computer, you should be ok because that's what I did as well. BTW, you can also use the Sync feature in Firefox on both computers, if you'd like to keep the profiles on both computers in sync with each other. You will need a Firefox account for this because you'd need to login on both computers and turn on Sync. Hope this makes sense and helps...cheers!

Will it save all my 40 Tabs, Thanks for all your videos
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 8 месяцев назад
Hi there, you're welcome! In order to transfer/save your open tabs, the Firefox Sync feature is one way to do it after you've followed the process mentioned in this video to transfer the Firefox Profile folder. If you don't want to use the Firefox Sync feature, to transfer open tabs, what you'll need to do is find the file called "sessionstore.jsonlz4" and then copy and paste it into the main Firefox Profile folder on your new computer. You'll find the "sessionstore.jsonlz4" file under the sub-folder called "sessionstore-backups" which is under the main Firefox Profile folder. If you're going to use the second option above, it's best to log out of Firefox Sync from both the computers and you'll also need to make sure you close Firefox before copying/pasting the above mentioned file. Hope this helps...cheers!

I really appreciate your fast response and your suggestion but I think that it would be easier for me to copy all the URL and paste it back in the new Firefox since I have no experience with the Sync feature,I hope it will work !! Thanks again
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho 8 месяцев назад
You're welcome! BTW, you don't need to use the Sync feature. Instead, you can just copy the "sessionstore.jsonlz4" file. If you just prefer copying/pasting the URLs of each of the tabs, you can save them in Notepad and then save it onto a USB flash drive to move them onto your other computer.

@ElEcodelTren woah, that's a lot of open tabs you have there :) That being said, I believe you can still share multiple tabs. You will need to select all the tabs and then share them. In order to select multiple tabs, you can click on the first tab, then press and hold the SHIFT key while clicking on the last tab. You can then share the selected tabs. Hope that works for you...do let me know. Cheers!

Doesn't work, after I do that all pages open as "Secure connection failed" Error code: SEC_ERROR_LIBRARY_FAILURE
@AnthonyGodinho
@AnthonyGodinho Год назад
Hi there, this error can be caused by a server error or a network error but sometimes other applications may be interfering with the proper functioning of Firefox on your computer. This can also be caused by a virus or a malware that is installed on your computer. You're best bet is to refresh Firefox using the Refresh feature which can be found by typing "about:support" in the address bar and hitting Enter. This will open a new page where you will see a "Refresh Firefox" button (top-right corner). Hope this helps...cheers!

Hi Connor, unfortunately, I don't think you can use the same approach when copying and pasting a Firefox profile from one OS (Windows) to another (Linux). You would have to copy specific files/folders (rather than the full profile) and it may not work as intended.

Is there a point where I take the usb stick out of my old laptop and put it in my new laptop? Also, I have never used ctrl+c and +v . Don`t laugh.I am 70 and struggling on my own here.- I got to the point until the Transfer bit.

Hello Suzanne, yes, around the 2:19 minute mark (in the video) is where you use the USB flash drive on your new laptop. Essentially, as soon as you backed up the Firefox folder from the old laptop, you can remove the USB drive and connect it to your new laptop. No worries :) I understand that not everyone uses keyboard shortcuts like CTRL+C (copy) and CTRL+V (paste). You can also use the right-click option on your mouse and use the copy and paste options. Hope this makes sense and helps...good luck!
