Very nicely done. I have a Raytech machine that uses The Handpiece. Essentially I've used this but never fully understood that there are some differences that need to be taken into consideration to make the transition. Initially purchased and used a left mast Graves that I learned on. Never thinking or considering the differences your video pointed out with a Handpiece type. Now have a better understanding of the Raytech/Handpiece and how to properly use it. Also your video on tramming/balancing was quite helpful to make sure the Raytech Handpiece was accurate. Thanks for taking the time to put these issues into perspective.

Glad it was helpful. I’ve never used the Raytech to cut on and I’m wondering if there are some essential differences between the Sri Lankan style machine and the Raytech machine

@@JustinKPrim - Your video shows the ways that can be applied and work also with the Raytech. One thing, if you will? The dual prepolish & polish lap is great and will be helpful. Are they available anywhere or would I have to fabricate something to work? So far, I haven't been able to search any out. Thanks again for all you're doing! :)

Very nicely done. I was actually thinking about going to a handheld. I know it’s gonna be a lot different but in the same time it looks like it’s gonna be a lot easier. Thanks for the video. Appreciate it take care and God bless.

Love the first section. I have an old sapphire faceting machine from arrow company and it doesnt have any guages. the angle set is 2 pieces of metal with lines on them, and my micro height adjust is stiff. but stones still come out well knowing how to use the machine.

I have a lot of experience on both handpiece and mast machines. Of course the exact same way of adjusting the angle that you are showing by lowering the plate is done on the mast machine by lowering the mast. No difference in speed or difficulty. Mast machines can also be cheated steeper with the fine hard stop adjuster. This is faster and more accurate than the handpiece.

You mentioned in this video that the handpiece machine came frSriLanka and is a less expensive gig. What company did you order from? And how much is inexpensive? I am on a tight budget and will probably have to save up awhile.

Great question. Here’s a shopping list I put together that has the details on the machine I use as well as all the other stuff you need to get started. You need to budget around $2500 but that includes not just the machine but all the tools and all the laps you need to do anything. drive.google.com/file/d/14NvJ89tXbRh6wIkFRljjQ607qcall20W/view?usp=drivesdk

Thank you Justin, perfect timing as from following your videos and recommendations, I am currently in contact with Sadun to purchase the variable speed version with cheater handset. Therefore this video and the info within could not have come at a better time. My original plan was to buy your kit but the IGT website is showing 'out of stock' so I have initially agreed to buy the Lapidary Accessories package as well. But to be honest, comparing the two lists, I think I would still prefer to purchase your kit, providing it is currently available. If so, could you update the website so I may place my order. TIA. Regards. John

You won’t regret this purchase I took delivery of mine a month ago, fantastic peace of kit. Sri Lanka is having a bad time with COVID so delivery won’t be instantaneous however it’s worth the wait. I purchased the full kit, it all works well. See it on Marks faceting shed.

@@marksgemfaceting Yes I am in touch with Sadun and he said they were having big problems so I am quite happy to wait. It's what it is unfortunately :-( I have also been chatting to Justin and having put the two lists side by side, Justin's comes out on top. Currently he is waiting on a lamp, that is why the site is flagging up out of stock. But I am happy to take the rest so not an issue. Another factor is I live a couple of hours down the coast from Bangkok so chances are I will be attending one of his classes once Covid is finally under control and we open up. Therefore makes sense to use the same kit, that way he can tune me using the same gear ;-)

Frosted designs is no problem but if you want to use this with a fantasy/concave machine you would probably have to build an attachment yourself. If you want to hand carve after faceting that would work.

We need to figure out how to macuyver these handpieces to have the gauges because I'm never going to cut enough stones to get the 'feel' of it, and while I have a good enough eye to spot a really shoddy faceting job, I'm not likely to have a good enough eye to not cut a wonky stone. I don't have the money for that. I inherited my 80's raytech shaw. I'd love to make good use of it as a hobby cutter. I also have a bunch of idaho opal rough that I want to be able to grind perfectly flat in the plane of the color bar, and I'm thinking the handpiece won't be useful for that, but a mast would.
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim 2 года назад
I think you just need a good instructional. Our students cut 4 stones in two weeks and a lot of them are good from the first one with no gauges and nothing but your eye.
@andreameigs1261
@andreameigs1261 2 года назад
Interesting. I'll skip the details, but I just got a really good idea. I am considering taking your course, but my machine is used and may have been screwed up in shipping, and I would hate to find out that my machine is wonky before signing up...you see the predicament I am in. Anyway, I will definitely keep your courses in mind and maybe if I am having issues cutting the basic stone in the raytech manual, I'll get a one on one. Thank you for your response. Also, if you have a triplet instructional, I would love to know how to grind an opal that only has a colorbar the thickness of a human hair. The spencer Idaho opal is geyser opal, so much of the color is very thin and perfectly flat.

Mast type machines are more accurate than the handpiece. Mast type machine can be used for more fansy cuts with high accuracy, while handpiece machine can be used for cutting more and simple designs... Handpiece machine: cut more earn more Mast machine: cut less but fansy
@JustinKPrim
@JustinKPrim Год назад
I would agree with this. I can cut fairly complex designs on my Handpiece but super super complicated, intricate patterns become very challenging and time consuming, With that being said, those complex designs don’t really sell better or for more money than a well- designed simple pattern, so therefore they aren’t cost effective at all. Plus usually they complex cuts are built around brilliant pavilion designs and therefore lose a lot of weight.
