BDOutdoors' own Ricky Fischel is onboard Sekas Sportfishing with Christian Sekas at Catalina Island fishing for some shallow water halibut. In this video they explain how to use the trap rig when fishing for halibut with live bait. The trap rig will allow you to capitalize on significantly more of your bites via the stinger hook, and is an extremely effective way to fish for halibut.

This also catches lingcod very well. they tend miss the nose hook and get caught on the treble

This is more a how to bait a fishing hook. I was looking for some insight on halibut. How long should the leader be? What type of sinker?

Hey Tim...check out the article in the desciption for some more in depth information! The leader should be around 18 inches give or take, and the sinker that you use will depends on the speed of your drift and depth that you are fishing. Obviously, you will want to maintain bottom contact, so you will need a heavier sinker in deeper/fast drift scenarios, and lighter for shallow water/slow drift scenarios.

will it matter if i use steel leader in the s.f. bay for halibut because the water is a green color

Personally we never use a steel leader when fishing for halibut. If you've been having success by doing that than by all means continue to do it! We find that a mono or fluoro leader tends to do the trick more often than not, and that getting a bite is often more so conditions based than anything.

Great question! Ideally you're going to want to use fluorocarbon for you leader line generally in the range of 15-30lb. It's personal preference whether you decide to fish straight braid to a leader or a short topshot of monofilament to your leader. Hope this helps!

You don't need a sinker for this fishing?

Hey Gabriel, you will need a sinker to fish this rig. In this video we explain the trap rig which will be the leader portion of the rig. This will be tied to a 3-way swivel which will be attached to your main line as well as you sinker. If you don't know how to snell a hook, then use a Carolina keeper for the first hook

Good tip! The carolina rig is another deadly technique for halibut fishing, especially if you don't have any three way swivels on hand.

My stinger hooks continually fall out after the bait swims for a few seconds. Any suggestions?

Make sure the barb of one of the shanks of the treble hook is passed entirely through the sardine. This will help ensure that the hook doesn't slide back and fall out of the bait.

The stinger does get those short bites but it kills that natural movement of your live bait. The captain I fish with for Ca hali never uses a stinger. After finding the fastest bait in the tank you dont want to put a hk in both ends of it plus - Ive caught 35 lb ones on a 1/0 owner needle point/perfection loop & 4 ft fluoro 20 lb test with a very light drag. I dont plan on trying anything else as Ive already tried everything.
