We did 3 months on $2500 and lived very well. Cambodia was the highlight of cheapness, we find a hostel for $2 USD per night, private room, plus meals from around 50c.
7 years ago i visited cambodia and street foods were about 50cents. but if u visit on downtown it doesnt cost less than america lol.... (especially the place where for trevales)
i just did a video like this a week or so ago. love yours! do you think you could travel cheaper? we seem to notice are monthly spendings around 400$ but we are also traveling as a couple
you could take plane's in the Philippine's if you want to, but there are a ton of ferry ride's the locals take to hop between islands. It's usually cheaper and more fun. One more thing, a smile in SouthEast Asia is probably one of the best things you could give to a local.
Yes, solid advice Alexander Travelbum. 500$/m is very do-able, even including flights. The beers are great, so cheap! Just depends on how many beers you have haha :)
Hey Budgeteers, very true. Thanks for the comment. I’ve been watching you for a while now, since before I traveled to Asia last year. Glad to see you here on my channel. Loved your stuff. Cheers!
I pay -3 dollar per night on hostels in Cambodia, 3 dollars in Thailand and Laos, and less than 6 dollars in Vietnam. I spend less than 10 dollars in Bali. Your accommodations in Bali looks so awesome. Amazing, how Bali can be that cheap and yet so fantastic. Most touristic islands in the Philippine don't have cheap hostels.
Pretty cool to get some insight on how the budget could look like. I was originally planning to backpack New Zealand this February, but it felt more tempting to visit Indonesia as I started to look more into it. NZ is also more similar to my country (Norway), and I'd rather see something completely different when I go backpacking. Your video made it clear that South-Asia is where I want to explore. If 500 - 1000 USD a month is the standard monthly budget, I can almost travel a year with the same budget I had planned for two months in New Zealand! Thank you mate, you earned a sub. :)
swdoffa thanks for the sub and for watching. Yes, Southeast Asia will be a TON cheaper than NZ. If you're on a budget and have the time to travel longer. I'd say try SÈ Asia first. You can do much much more with your dollar
@@AlexanderTravelbum from what I've red on the internet some places are $3 / night. And they also have hotels for $200. My thought was who the hell stays thier.. foren government personnel?? $200 in that part of the world.. ya avoid. And can you find a random place for less then $10 by just showing up?
@swdoffa hey man, I am in exactly the same boat as you were in. I was set on travelling in NZ as a working holiday for a few months from Jan next year before I go to europe but i feel like it is very similiar to my own home country which is australia. Im now thinking more and more going to SE asia. I am just wondering did you enjoy your travels their? I am 18 and just finished high school so that is a factor.
Love the video!! Southeast Asia is super affordable! We taught English in Thailand and made around 700 a month and lived comfortably. In Vietnam we worked online and made about 2000 a month and lived like Kings!
I mention that in the video. Thailand, especially the south is more expensive. These prices aren’t found in Thailand but a lot of other places in Southeast Asia
This is awesome! I find that traveling on a budget always leads to more authentic, unexpected adventures off the beaten path that are very special. Thanks for the tips!

I am going to thailand, cambodia, vietnam, laos and Myanmar next February its a 5 week tour as its my first ever time traveling and i am planning to stay up to 6 weeks after my tour to adventure solo or with a few people i meet from it maybe, would you say its a good idea or not?
Alexander Travelbum thanks alot mate and for replying too i am excited to hell its thanks to the budgeteers really but since finding them i have found you too and love these videos you do.
Good info! I've done a lot of traveling in Asia and some parts of it actually has Uber now. Which is great and very cheap compared to taxi's. Especially taking one from the airport to your hotel or wherever you are staying. Plus, they can't change the price on you. Just a tip for people you will be traveling to Asia or anywhere for that matter. Check if they have it available first.
Thanks! You recommended to book ahead because all of the cheap and good ones are taken ahead of time, but what if you're going to a place that isn't very popular, is it worth it not to book and save on the booking fees?
Such a great content! Gives me inspiration to get there again. I make traveling videos but on a very basic level for my own , appreciate it if you could have a look.
Hi bro, I have been in SE Asia 4 times and in total more than 6 months traveling as a backpacker. I have been in Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Myanmar. I know Agoda, hostelworld etc. but I have _never_ seen a place where you could actually stay for 1 dollar a night? Cheapest place where at Cat Ba Island in Vietnam where me and my mate found a private 'hotel-room' for 6 dollars pr. night. Ofc it also depends on the standard and location you are up to. But can you please show me some links where I can find accommodation for 1 dollar?
Some tips about Bali after our 2 months vacation there... use online online taxis GoJack anf Grab (download both and compare the prices), don't eat at fency restaurants, the food is not much better and the prices are double. If you are not in a hurry don't book villas and hotels in adavance - you can go to hotels and privite villas and bargin..we managed to decrease by 20% the price of 2 hotel rooms. Always bargin when you can do it..basically you can't bargin only at supermarkets and malls. Everywhere else you need to to do your best and never buy whatever you want from the first place..try few places and don't be scared to offer very low prices..you will be surprised that sometimes it really works..no matter if it is fruit to boat tickets
LILIANA SURIEL go at the right time. Make sure it's low or shoulder season. The cheapest time to fly is the first two weeks in January. Also, use Kayak and set up flight alerts. You'll get emails or texts showing you when prices drop significantly. Also, I believe Bangkok is usually one of the cheapest cities to fly into, so even if you're interested in another city it could be cheaper to fly there and then make your way by cheap Asian airlines or train. I did all of this to find my ticket for less than $200
Fly out of a major city like New York. I live near Charlotte NC which is a large airport, but if I fly internationally from there it's crazy expensive. However, a commuter flight to JFK in New York is only around $80 and there are multiple flights daily. I found a ticket from JFK to Bangkok for $350 one way. Add on the flight to get to New York and it's $430 total from Charlotte NC to Thailand.
Also make sure you put your browser in incognito mode to stop cookies ramping up the price (basically flight websites spy on you by saving info on your browser so they can inflate prices to create demand) . I live in england and I have found a flight from london to romania for £3. I cant even get the bus/train to work for that price let alone the other side of europe. Also dont think anyone had mentioned skyscanner.net yet so try them, thats where I found the flight for £3.
ive noticed the best thing to get cheap flights to Asia is use Skyscanner and choose cheapest month if you want to check out my video i will walk you thru how to save and book cheap flights! we flew from NYC- Bali for 450$ ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ywctb5L4Lsw.html
I really wanna try backpacking for the first time and alone , but the thought is scary. But seems like i have no other choice. Philippines much violence? IDK if I heard it right.. How do you get a cheap accommodation?? Last summer I paid at least almost 10 $ a night. I need more hacks...
Backpacking alone is a must-try experience. It isnt as scary as it seems before you leave. Once you go, you realize that you are really never alone. Of course you can do your own thing, but it is just as easy to meet other travelers or locals to become friends with. You will probably have people with you constantly, and mostly you will be in groups of people and you wont feel scared. Where are you going exactly? Get your accomodation in Southeast Asia with the Agoda app. It's easy to find very cheap hostels, and sometimes hotels.
Loved your video dude! so true about getting off a bus or a boat and they hound you but if you walk....just walk half a k or so....so much better price. besides...its better to walk after a long bus trip rather than hop off the bus and just jump into a tuk tuk or a cab. I found Penang was really bad for hounding you, they were so bad we actually couldn't even get off the bus....but anyway...a really good video...well done :)
Many good tips man! The domestic flights are super cheap in almost every country in the southeast. I Just got back from a crazy good trip in Southeast Asia where I shot my very first Travel film. Feel free to check it out and be sure to ask me if you wanna know some good destination in Asia!
I dont understand how you can talk about taxi in 4 minuts and not mention Grab wich is deffinetly the cheapest form of taxi in asia. Grab is like asian Uber and you can both get car or the chepest sit on the back on a Grab Bike, which is also super fun and good if you are traveling alone. There is Grab pretty much every where in asia, at least where i have been. You just get the APP just like Uber, ask for a ride and put in the location you are going to just like Uber, but you pay in cash and not ower the phone but the prices are fixes so they cannot scam you exept from taking a ekstra long route, but you should just dobbelt check the route yourself
Just subd! I’m traveling to Asia for two months. I’m doing Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, and maybe more, but those are the main ones that I’ll be visiting. Any place in Bali you recommend? Preferably the one you mentioned in the vid.
500 DOLLARS a month wow man that's really cheap. We are traveling in Thailand at the moment we are vlogging about it but wow we can't make it on 500 dollars a month any more.
AI says it not possible but here’s a budget breakdown according to AI. 1. Accommodation: • Daily budget: $150 (total budget for accommodation) / 30 ≈ $5.00 per day 2. Food: • Daily budget: $200 (total budget for food) / 30 ≈ $6.67 per day 3. Transportation: • Daily budget: $50 (total budget for transportation) / 30 ≈ $1.67 per day 4. Activities/Excursions: • Daily budget: $50 (total budget for activities) / 30 ≈ $1.67 per day 5. Miscellaneous: • Daily budget: $50 (total budget for miscellaneous) / 30 ≈ $1.67 per day So how did you do it?
Hi Alexander, my names Nathan, I love your videos and tips and especially love your ideology that anyone can travel anywhere on a budget. I’ve watched a lot of your videos and took a lot of your information on board. I myself am flying out to SEA next month solo travelling on a budget with no end date in mind. I also plan to document everything, the good and the bad. (hopefully not too much bad😬) You’ve already been a lot of help which I thank you for, but I’m wondering if I could ask you some more specific questions to give me a little more confidence in terms of vlogging and general social media engagement. I would really appreciate it and would return the favour eventually in some way If I can. Happy travelling 👍🌏😁 Nathan (The cheap traveller)
I love SEA. It is truly heaven for a budget traveller. I am retiring in six months and can’t wait to hit the road. Thanks for this. I just found your channel and subscribed. Such a good source of info. Street food is the bomb. It’s mostly what I eat. And I will be checking out Agoda. Peace and love and happy travels. ☮️🇨🇦
I want to start travelling very cheap. I have an Indian passport. Which place should I start with?... And how much money will I approximately need?... And how do I keep travelling?... Where to get money from?
Wait until you arrive before you pick up your pirate copy of Lonely Planet. Some kid in the backstreets of Ho Chi Minh City will sell you a copy for $5.00 or less. Poor value-to-weight ratio but there you go.
Couldn't have found this video at a better time! Leaving for 6 months in Asia on the 4th of January! My only concern is that I will have to avoid cheap food due to my peanut allergy...:(
Asian food is the best food in the world. It’s all different from each other. There is so much more variety in Asian food compare to others. Flavors range from everything.
Yeah..streetfood in SEA can be the cheapest, most flavorful, tastiest but you left out 1 thing alex...they can be the dirtiest.free typhoid, amoebiasis, hepatitis A.any takers?

I loved the video, today I'm doing an exchange in Ireland and before going back to Brazil I'm going to do a backpacking in Southeast Asia, here in Ireland I work 20 hours a week and to save some money, my idea is to save £ 3000 thousand euros, plus or minus $ 3500 dollars, and try to spend the maximum of months knowing the Asia.
Glad to hear that, you can definitely travel in Southeast Asia for quite a while with a few thousand dollars. Just be smart, plan ahead, and avoid the expensive things!
Then why western people always do a hitch-hike in southeast asia??? You all have a great currency better than any southeast asia country..You all always claim that you're have a good mentality, and so on but you all always do a hitch-hike, begger for some money in southeast asia..You can see in Saigon no begger, they sell something even mineral water at lake,at least do a job..Western people came from advanced country you should support the local industry..Western people have always taken advantage of the good and courtesy SEA people..Travel budjet is a good but not for western people for doing a hitch-hike if you're not in emergency situation..
Damn really that cheap? The cheapest I heard was about £1000 a month. But £500 a month means I could maybe do 4 months in Asia before going to work in Australia :D Thanks for the info bro
I cant tell the name of the app you are talking about in the video to use for booking accommodations. Talking so fast. What is the link for this app/site???
great video. voice a bit too shaky. But great content. Just too GLAAD awards, which is good. Unless you are no where near that category. Well, still nice video. Love the color and tone of the room.
I believed you, but had to hassle every single situation. not everybody have that kind of ability . very doable but if you want to enjoy your vacation spend a little more, feel more comfortable and help the struggling locals make a few bucks.
True. Spend more if you can, do it way differently if you can. This was just a video specifically about traveling cheap. It’s not the only way, or the best way. Just tips to get those out there that don’t have much to start
Hey man! First of all thanks for the video. I'll soon be travelling South East Asia with a tiny budget and this is helpful! Couple questions from a fellow nomad! 1. Do you really find 1$ hostels on agoda? or is this asking around? I've never found anything this cheap on agoda myself (I've used it traveling around the world). 2. The video of you on the boat on Lake Inle (I think), I really want to go there myself. Do you have any tips on how to get cheap boat rides or "tours" around there. How did you do it? I'd really appreciate it if you find the time to answer me! Thank you!
