How To Treat A Broken Bird Wing

This is the method I always use to treat broken bird wings. Understand, however, that birds who break their wings almost never fly again, or will have at best very limited flight. This method is mainly so that it will mend such that it doesn't have to drag its wing around on the ground anymore

I just spent a month reviving a little zebra dove in Bangkok - 2 cat attack - and after a month I handed him over to a vet on the way to the Wildlife Park. They sent a video of him being released and flying off. He had no wounds but half his feathers were gone. No tail or back feathers. They grew back pretty fast! I fed him chia seeds and let him fly about my room. No cage. It was a joy to see him fly away, though I miss him! I love crows and thank you for taking care of this guy🙏💖

People think birds carry way more illnesses than they actually do. I am not saying it's completely save to handle them but most times it's fine and you won't get sick from touching them.

Are you telling me people can DO things without immediately calling a wildlife "expert" to save them? Finally someone with a brain. This is a good video. To all the bird friends (I am one too) you DON"T need to pretend you are totally incapable and call the authorities whenever a problem happens. You guys should try living in a remote place for five seconds before you scream.. "REEEE avian vet for every single issue no matter how minor! Mortgage your house for or you are a monster! Drive 1000 miles to find one even if you can set a wing with your eyes closed"-Everyone on a bird forum.

@elithluxe7568

@@scammervanessa3864 I’m in nyc and there is literally only one bird rescue around and I had a bad experience last time with turning in a pigeon with canker and them putting it down and even though I know there was no chance of rescue because he was beyond saving with organ failure, I could not forget it. The wild bird fund (which is the rescue) releases all the birds back in Central Park which is right behind it and I just knew this bird could not fly again since many with wing injuries can’t and since it can’t fly and be released back in Central Park, it will definitely be euthanized because of the reduced quality of life and they won’t keep any bird long term until it dies. So I searched online for bird rescue groups/pages and I found one and they recommended the wild bird fund but I told them why I didn’t want to turn him in and so they got me connected with a bird/pigeon rehabilitator and my parents drove me over to her place and I dropped off the bird. She was able to properly feed him and nurse him to health but unfortunately his wing was permanently damaged but she was able to find a permanent home for him and now he is in an aviary with 11 other rescue birds in Pennsylvania and living his best life. I would suggest you find websites and online bird pages and contact them through their help form because when you do, they can connect you with a wildlife rehabilitator and rescue groups in the area. My birds bones were hanging out and a few had already completely fell out. Since yours has only a tear, this might be viable. The most important thing is to make sure he doesn’t starve. Both of the pigeons I rescued were in stages of starvation with the first one being so bad that his organs failed and the second one had green poop which is a sign of starvation even though I tried force feeding it bird seed. You have to make sure it eats and drinks

Thank you. I just found a mourning dove that appears to have some kind of wing injury. I've handled and helped wild birds before but not with a wing injury. Thanks for the info. Yep, we put him in a cardboard box on soft clean towels in a dark-ish spot for the first night. Got him to sip a little water by sticking his beak in a small cup but he is a little out of it. Probably will wait until tomorrow to tape him up. You just never know, he could have hit the front window and sustained a concussion. But a day or so in a safe place to rest fixes a lot of things.

@@elithluxe7568 unfortunately he passed that night. I wrapped his wing with the self-stick bandage and gave him food and water in a cardboard box. in the morning he was gone. @@cookiechaina1238 I'm really sad because stuff keeps happening to my favorite birds. I feed pigeons and one of them got canker. It's beak was open and everything and it couldn't close, swallow or drink. Took it it to the wildlife center and they euthanized cause the bird was going through organ failure and in massive pain due to starvation. Now this one I noticed wasn't coming by from like a month ago. My brother outside saying it can't fly while the other one has been seeing it staying in the staircase at night. It's bone is protruding from the skin and feather and hanging down and literally held together by a few threads which is why I think this method won't be much because it's not just a simple fracture. I want to take it to the wildlife center but I'm afraid they won't be able to fix it and euthanize it because even if they do release it in central park, it won't survive especially at night with predators

I found a beautiful rock dove who has an injury on the inner most part of his wing, I took him to the vert but didn't get much help so I'll learn to do these things myself she didn't even tell me if the wing was actually broken. I have another, a releasing dove, who we found as a juvie who had a broken but mostly healed wing but he won't open his wings past the first joint so I kept him. If the other can't fly (he also won't use the leg, it seems in atrophy signifying he never used it prior to the injury) I'll have to accommodate more for him because of the limp leg if he can't fly too. He definitely wants to give things a go because he eats and drinks normally and he cooed once today so he's not given up. Might set up an area for pigeons who can't fly when I'm older :)

But I need to get it healthy before release. Its very cold, teens mid 20⁰'s far. This is great video. I know nothing about helping birds.

I was given a black shouldered kite with a badly broken wing. I asked several bird people for advice but this was fruitless. I put the bird into a large parrot cage but it panicked and flapped around so much it twisted its wing very badly. I untwisted the wing and set the bird on top of the cage. it settled down with a hanging wing. I decided not to tie up its wing as I had seen done before and just left it to settle in a room where I kept pet mice and guinea pigs. over time the bird seemed to be doing okay and even leapt onto my glass mouse pen. I had been feeding it mice. I was amazed at how calm the bird was as I moved about the place. I never saw it eat the mice but its scats were just squeezed out remains of the mice. one day the kite just took off straight through the open door without hesitation and I never saw it again. so my advice is just let the wing heal normally.

Thank you. I found a mourning dove today with a broken wing. She was eating away at my ground feeder but the tail feathers were missing (which is what I noticed first) and the one wing was hanging. I decided to let her eat for a while and watched her and then I decided to see if I could catch her (I figured if she flew away, then she had a good chance of surviving). She ran from me but couldn’t fly. I have her in a cage now next to the feeder so she can see the other birds (and she has her own food and water). I’m going to try to wrap her wing next. I don’t want to take her to a rehab place because I’m sure they will euthanize her. Fortunately, mourning doves are not illegal to keep as pets in the US so I’m just going to take it a day at a time and see how she does. I do have a good avian vet who is in on Mondays and Wednesdays so if she survives the weekend I might take her in to be seen by her.

Thank you so much. I have called the bird rescue for a starling the a cat caught. They won't help him because he isn't indigenous to north America but is from Europe. I have been feeding him for a few days in hopes to get him to the rescue center. Since they won't help him, I will need to try and set his wing. Can anyone tell me if 3 to 4 days after injury will pose a problem in his healing. I was also told he would need antibiotics due to the cat's saliva. Is this your understanding as well? Thank you for any advice.

I have a male white with grey and black spotting dove/pigeon that im trying to dave. Someone found it on the side of the road with a hanging wing. They and could not find the owner. The wildlife centre is refused to take it as they say, it’s a domestic. I dont believe it is. Either way i decided to take it. It’s been about four days now and it’s no problem eating and drinking and allows me to pet him, etc. that did not happen in the beginning. Is it too late to try to set this wing? The damage seems to be on the wrist as you stated. The front part. There was some pink and a small little cut. The bird seems quite fine and does try to flap its wings and it seems to go where it should be but then it goes back down.. if you say I can still said it then I’m going to do that. I bought a parrot cage for it and it seems to be doing quite fine so as long as you say, I can still said it that I would like to give it a chance.

Thank you, I've found a pigeon that's got a compact fracture.. I used the make up removal pads & Betadine.. although we have some Manuka honey and gel from the vets for a cat that had an abscess, when I change in it I will put that on it.. also strap the wing to his body, I currently just have the wing strapped.. great tutorial.

A hawk attacked our quail and the tip of her wing is sitting high now when beside her body but I can't feel a break in the 2 upper parts which makes me think that it is in the wrist or the feathers have bent?

I’m so grateful I found you two. I have a young dove that has a broken wing, it actually does look like it’s wrist is broken as well. I haven’t felt around her wing fully yet, I have given her foods and water, made her box comfortable for her. She does listen and allows me to stroke her head and back and stays calm, just listening, I wanted her to get a bit more used to me, she does look healthy and all, I don’t want her to have more stress. Would it be ok to feel her wing tonight, I don’t want her to stress more, I want to wrap it however, making sure not to wrap it incorrectly. What do you suggest, will it be ok by tonight, and she’s smaller, I’d absolutely be heartbroken if I caused her to go into shock.

What if the wing is not droopy and still flaps but rather than lying flat against the body it is perpendicular to the body and the bird ( hummingbird) is holding it away from the body. Do you suppose it is dislocated? I can not find anyone to help. The leg was injured too but is healing now. The bird is active and eating well but the wing is still held in weird position. Flaps the wings but does not fly. Any help appreciated. 🙏🏻 all the info I can find suggests droopy wings.

My wife and I have a fledgling we're nursing right now. The right wing has feathers at the tip sticking out away from the body and anytime we touch them it starts chirping while moving the wing away. Anytime it spreads the other wing fully, it will only halfway spread out the other. Should we do this for it?

What is the window of opportunity to be able to help heal a wing before it sets incorrectly on its own? We have an injured female common grackle in our yard with a wing that is not dragging, but that is also not tucking properly. She can hop around, fly a few feet at a time, and forage for food and has been doing so for about a week. But she can't properly fly. Is it too late to help?
@akayokaki
@akayokaki 6 лет назад
If you did decide to help, I'd definitely see about getting an X-ray first. If it's not actually broken, it's better for her to be able to work with it somewhat as she has been. Far as the window goes, I'm not sure. They heal a bit quicker than we do, so a lot could have happened in a week

Do you have any social media or email that I can send pics through and get some advice because I can't find any info or similar situations online? The bird I found has the bone popping out and hanging by a thread like I can pull it out. I don't know what to do because the bone protruded and poked through skin and feather and is hanging out against the wing. Will this work? I'm afraid to take it to the wildlife center because I think it's been like this for a month max before I left to another city and I noticed that it wasn't coming by to feed (it's my favorite pigeon). It was residing in the staircase at night since it can't fly. I would really appreciate some advice since I don't know what to do at all and I want to cry. Already had another favorite of mine die from canker and the wildlife center had to put it down cause it was undergoing organ failure and in pain due to starvation and dehydration.

So I need help, basically a couple days ago we found a turtle dove with a broken wing, ok so I’ve been keeping it in a box with towels and food and water, do their wings recover p?
@akayokaki
@akayokaki 2 года назад
An actual broken wing typically does not recover to flight capable again. It can recover to be able to tuck and extend, maybe even exercise a bit with flapping. But flight is very rare. In my experience, only magpies have been able to recover from wing breaks
