Mastitis is very very painful for a female of any type of animal. One thing they recommend for pain relief ( for septic mastitis) is a warm compress and expressing the milk out of that teat. Another way an animal can get mastitis from nursing their babies then laying down in a bacteria laden environment aka dirty hay in a nestbox. I would change the material in the nest box the day after birth ( or after all babies are born) and at a week old. I've never had a rabbit with mastitis but i have had a goat. Poor baby cried like hell when we milked out that teat but once the blood milk and infection was expressed she had emence relief. Hot compresses help with the pain but getting the infected milk out is a must. My goat got it because her teats hung so low to the ground. We fixed it by making her a bra. Sounds crazy but it really worked. Lol

Interesting. The thought of a goat in a bra makes me chuckle. :)

@@Slightlyrednecked she was a pure bred saanen that gave 3+ gallons of milk a day. If we didn't put a bra on her she would get splinters in her teats from jumping on her milk stand. She gave so much milk we had enough for a family of 6 a baby deer and raised up 6 piglets to slaughter weight in unbelievable short time.

My Dutch doe has this right now. I gave her a dose of penicillin last night, poor thing, her mammary glands are all solid, I have no idea when this started. The kits are two weeks old and my first litter of Dutch bunnies. My other rabbits are bigger so I didn't realize they weren't getting fed. Hopefully she gets better

That is unfortunate. It can be difficult to diagnose problems in rabbits though.

Thanks for the video Chris. I have a new doe that we took in just recently that had babies unexpectedly. She is stomping them. I don't know if it's her first Kindle or not as the lady I took her from wasn't knowledgeable at all. Do you think it's worth breeding her again to see if she cares for the next kindle or should we just eat her? She didn't pull fur either.

Thanks for the educational video!! We have never had a rabbit with mastitis. We have found by raising our rabbits in a colony seems to work well for us. Thanks for sharing!!!

Mind me asking about the setup? I don't hear of too many using a colony. I'd like to have a colony setup someday, so any advice is nice

H. S. We have a 1200 square foot pen fenced in with hurricane wire buried a foot in the ground and a net that covers the top to protect from hawks. They have a big mound of dirt that they burrow in and have their little ones. We have no problem. You can check out our rabbit colony video on our RU-vid page to get a look at it. Reap what you seaux

Warm compresses may help during antibiotics. That is what the Dr told my cousin. For human, cant see why it wouldn't help with rabbits too. Mastitis is extremely painful.

I raise and breed Dutch rabbits for show and pets. First time doe mother got nasty septic mastitis. She is extremely special to me because I hand raised her and she is a pet and show bunny. She formed an abscess that drained with high fever, lethargy and anorexia. She also lost condition exceptionally fast due to her feeding her kits but not eating herself. As with all rabbits she hid her illness until she was really sick. I separated her from the kits who are 5 weeks old. I am supplementing them with goat milk/KMR and heavy cream. She has been treated with fluid therapy, penicillin and pain control. Most important thing is ensuring you give them slurry feed at least three times a day of 10ml/1 lb weight by syringe if not feeding. Still offer hay and clean water. Penicillin needs to be subcutaneous and not lickable by the rabbit as it can kill their gut microbes and kill them in turn. Do not foster the kits in case they spread it to other does. Thankfully at 5 weeks mine are almost weaned. I am not breeding this doe again and will have her spayed. If these were meat rabbits I would cull for sure as scarring would make future litters problematic for feeding and you would see a reduction in kit survival. Pain control is key as it is exceptionally painful and it will cause them to not eat. Treatment for my rabbit was $700 for culture, blood work and wound care. I am a nurse and my rabbits are like my other kids. Again, depending on how the animal is intended to be used, humane euthanasia is warranted if the rabbit is meat or fur. I wouldn’t eat them after as eating sick animals is a health concern. Pet is dependent on financial circumstances.

Sure. I actually did a video on how I build my nest boxes. It is an old video so please excuse the poor editing. :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x4Yk7K6qHnA.html

Hi Chriss thanks for the informative video I have a question Out of the topic, you talked before on using Listerine for the eggs to improve the hatch rate, you mentioned that you have used Gold Listerine, I have the blue ones is it safe also to apply on the eggs or it has different chemical formula from the Golden one?
@brittanyolson3112
@brittanyolson3112 5 лет назад
Youssef Saab ONLY use gold. Do not use blue. ;) it's works !!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
I am honestly not sure what is in the blue Listerine or if it is safe to use or not. if you are having problems finding gold Listerine you can use rubbing alcohol or even hydrogen peroxide in place of Listerine. Just mix with water (half and half) and spray the eggs down.

Can a rabbit get mastitis if you wean her kits too soon? I've heard others say they don't remove all the kits at one time. More like a 50/50 some now some next week. Some even leave one kit in with momma. Wondering if that is why
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 лет назад
Weaning kits too soon can cause the doe to get too much milk for sure. it isn't the same thing as mastitis but can have similar results (swollen and enlarged). It isn't a big concern but what you described with moving the kits off slowly is a best practice.
@richardsalinas261990

Why don't you use wood boxes?
@heathert4882

Wood gets soiled with urine and poop. Hard to clean and maintain for multiple uses. I use plastic totes. I cut a hole in the side and fill with paper and straw. Does love it and you can disinfect easily.

My rabbit doe has been pregnant four times but there hadn't been any deliveries, now my Doe is pregnant again with milk in the breast but no babies again. Could it be that its aborting each time?? Pls help me
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 года назад
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems. it sounds like she is having failed pregnancies for whatever reason. The fact that this is her fifth time makes me think it is a genetic issue and it is probably best to look for a replacement rabbit. I wish I had better advice.
