the wrapping goes quicker if you take double lengths of thread to tie to the top of the shoelace, then take the thread double while wrapping :) I used to have those in my hair when I was a teen ;) *rockon*

just wrap it very tightly and when you want to change colors, put the old thread with all the others and then wrap the new thread tightly around the old so it won't come undone.
i'm not sure but i think if you slightly burn the ends of the shoe laces it melts and it would be a little more polished looking, it all depends on what they are made of, make a test in a piece of left over shoe lace :)
Another way to keep the threads from fraying would be to melt them with a lighter afterwards...you could also try to melt them together to keep everything together better :)
Wot a fab video, I have loads of thread, I just need to buy shoe laces. I will be making this when I have some free time. Who said this was racist, load of cobblers!!! It is a stunning necklace, my friends will love this!!
i used to make this tied to a hair clip and finish with a charm, to have hippy-braid but being able to remove them.... never though to make a necklace out of them...now i have to do so.
