How to trim Pig hooves

We have had many requests on how to trim pig hooves. Let me start out by saying we are not farriers but this is how we get our pigs trimmed. When you start a homestead there are many expenses that come up and you need to be able to take care of some of them yourself if you can. With practice and patience trimming your pig hooves is something that you can manage and not need to pay money to have done. Also, we don't have a pig farrier that we know of locally so we have taken on this task ourselves.

That wasn't so bad. I've been noticing that our older gilts need their first trimming (they just turned one), so you encouraged us to give it a go on our own!

Thanks for posting this. It gives me the confidence I need to tackle this with my Kune barrow's hooves. The only person who will do hooves on pigs where I live is the vet. He will only do them with sedation and it was 408.00 for 3 pigs! Doing it myself will save a fortune. I have been too chicken to flip them. My biggest boy is almost 550 lbs. I'm pretty sure after watching this video, and with help from my hubby or sister, I can do it.

Hoof trimming is one of my least favorite things to do with our goats. You make a difficult job look so easy. Well done you! Those Khakis are looking good. They are so independent at first but now they come running for us because they know who brings their food. Your flock looks beautiful. It was so good to see Jamie today! I bet y'all are enjoying your time together during the Christmas break. I don't know how teachers survive the chaos of kids all day every day. This is super helpful! Thank you! My 4 kunes are all overdue for this because I dont have much experience doing it and have been dreading learning. So the timing is perfect. You make it look easy. My boars are huge and my two gilts are small and kinda wild, so I’m a little nervous. Maybe I’ll just practice the flips a few times first.

Very helpful! If you have one bleed you can put styptic powder to clot it up. I keep some handy in case I cut myself shaving.

Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Darker nails on goats and dogs are harder to see. I do use a dremel on my show dogs. Is it harder to do the larger pigs? I'm under 115# and 5 ft tall.

So this works well on smaller pigs? Thanks for this video starting to think about trimming our girls they are Juliana mixes so still very small but I see you said it’s easier the smaller they are. You stay so nice and calm.

I have a very large pot belly pig who was trimmed buy a farrier years ago .He is outside and his Hooves have stayed good ,but I have had hand surgeries this past two years and have not been able to try and trim his hooves . They are really elongated now to the point where I'm concerned . Can I trim those very elongated hooves without doing something wrong? Would love to see you trimming directly from the side of the person triming, so we could see the hoof better. I need to do it but I'm so nervous about clipping something too far. And it seems like for some reason they have just grown abnormally fast. Is there a calming tranquilizer or something you can give the pig, if they are huge to be able to do this without there being a safety issue for you or them?

Is there any reason you couldn't dremel them? I used to be a dog groomer & by far most dogs are much more agreeable to dremel than clippers & it's a much better finish & less risk of quicking them.

Great video! Thank you! I need to do my pigs I guess, they are only 4 mo old but clearly need it from what you showed. My girl started to limp, yesterday so don't know if she got a small thorn or needs a trim. Can a small splinter thorn cause a limp? I can't feel anything.

Thank you. Could be a thorn we have had pigs limp before and haven’t found anything in their feet that might cause that it could be they twisted an ankle on a root or a variety of reasons

I "inherited" a large lady pot belly pig and her hooves are super long - dew claws long but straight. How often can I trim to get her hooves back to normal? I am guessing I can only take a little off at a time until the quick retreats? Like a dog? Any advice would help! Thanks a lot! Shelby in OH

We start once we notice they need it there isn’t really a normal age to start. It’s easier to roll them the younger they are so it’s nice to get them used to it

Depending how far along they are I think you could. If they seem stressed you may want to wait till later. If they are close to their due date I probably wouldn’t.

Have you ever considered not eating those animals who trust you? It takes 10+ years off their natural life span and now the largest Nutritional board in the world (who all our nutritional info comes from) say we can live healthily vegan so meat is entirely an optional choice. We can therefore choose whether or not to be cruel by killing and ezploiting animals needlessly.
