Very informative, I have a Question if you dont mind: I just purchased a home that has a 70 to 80 ft Pine (Not sure the type), but the branches extend all the way to the ground. I would like to lift the branches to about 5.5 to 6 ft as to make walking around the area and doing maintenance and the needed clearance to repair the fence. When lifting the branches is it safe to go up to 6 ft in height on a 70-80 ft pine?

Thank you, I'm glad that you liked the video. Congratulations on purchasing a new home. I have never trimmed a pine tree to that extent though I have seen it done before. There is always the risk of the tree dying any time it is pruned or damaged from the wind. Fungus or bacteria can enter where the branches are removed and in time kill the tree. The tree has ways of protecting itself with sap and healing its wounds naturally. If I were doing it I would prune it at the end of the dormant season which is usually March in Minnesota where I live. I would also cut outside the collar so that the tree has the best chance of healing the area where the branch was removed. There are no guarantees. I may also just remove one layer of branches per year so that only a few branches were removed each year. Allowing the tree to heal less wounds per year. I would also look at carefully propping or tying up the branches somehow to do maintenance and repair the fence. Then removing the ropes or props when repairs are done, no pruning needed.

@@PrairieTrading Thank You. From what I have read, trees go dormant in the Winter in Florida, but South Florida is not always written in stone. The tree appears to be healthy, just overgrown and owner never maintained and trimmed it, and now its a potental physical and legal hazard... not having an HOA and renters for neighbors has probably saved me there. Fence needs to be rebuilt due to the tree growing into it, but no big deal. For now Ill probably trim the more urgent parts, and let the wounds heal before I decide to trim more. Thanks for the advice.

@@chrisfenning5964 You are welcome and I hope everything works out for you and your tree. Maybe check with a local nursery or arborist on the best time and technique to trim your tree.

Thanks for the video, question if I may: what would one do if a pine tree is a.ready too tall? Topping is bad, but is there any other way to shorten it?

You are welcome. I have topped pine trees before and had good results. I choose the height that I wanted the tree to be and cut off the trunk at a branch that was by itself. (If there are more than one branch at the same elevation they will all compete to become the leader.) That branch then became the leader. The tree was no longer straight all the way up though it was that or cut the entire tree down. The pine tree that I cut off was only six feet tall so it wasn't very large. I hope this helps.

Thank you, we have a tree that has a huge dead spot and most of it is dying. Im going to trim it in the spring but I’m really worried about it. Is there a way to help that? Do I do exactly as you did with the large branches?

It would probably be best to pay an arborist look at the tree to determine if it will survive or not. It may have a disease or insect infestation and they may be able to recommend a treatment plan.

How are you suppose to keep them short unless you cut the crown

I use a method called, drop crotching. I cut off the leader where a side branch comes out and then the side branch becomes the leader.

I trimmed all of the branches using a hand pruner and a hand saw, no machines were used.
