I just recently finished off my Basic Keelboat 101, and at no time did anybody mention anything about that. AWESOME! Thanks!

Sail trim is covered in more detail in the next class, ASA 103. You can also learn a lot about sail trim on day sails with more experienced sailors by asking them about it and trying some adjustments. Most sailors are happy to share knowledge.

The boom vang is mostly used to flatten the sail and reduce twist when going downwind. This video is about adding twist when going upwind. (You can use the vang upwind, but its main use is downwind when the mainsheet has less leverage to pull down the boom.)

it really depends on the conditions, preferably when the wind is around 8-10 kn,waves are high you would crack off the vang outhaul and generally not point as high maybe 1-2 degrees off the wind for more power. but in heavy wing tou would want to put on more vang to tighten the leech more outhaul, all of this would help you flatten out the sail and de-power the boat.

My friend, even if you would articulate yourself properly, what you're saying does make sense only to you (and to a few more incompetent and pretentious folk like you).

When you say "ease off main", do you prefer to use the traveler to leeward or paying out more of the mainsheet itself? Thx!

Use the mainsheet to adjust the twist in the sail. Then use the traveller to adjust the angle of attack of the sail: the angle of the sail relative to the apparent wind direction. After easing the main to add some twist, you may need to move the traveller to windward to get back to the original angle of attack. The angle of attack should be near the wind direction, so that the boom is nearly parallel to the wind.

The purpose of the traveller is to change the AOA of the sail WITHOUT affecting the twist.
