I have a cat that is a terror when it comes to cutting nails.... It is to the point that her vet now sedates her because we all look like we have rammed our hands and arms through broken glass. I don't like sedating her so I was in search if a solution. I saw this video and tried it. I couldn't get her to "roll" with the blanket so I had to improvise. I never thought about using another towel to cover her eyes. But it worked. We got 3 paws done quickly and I had to let her go. But I eventually got the other paw done. There wasn't hair flying everywhere and she was not as stressed. The best part is, I only came out of this with 2 small scratches!
my cat is spoiled lil brat , she has never been nice to people apart from me and my family, she bites the doctors all the time xp so I have to do it myself .
The doctors get paid to do that stuff. They're supposed to have gloves, an e- collar and all the rest needed to deal with "fractious" cats. Find another vet.
OMG. This has always been such a chore for us and our Sugar. You hate to be aggressive and risk hurting your cat. But... this has to be done. This technique reduced this chore to less than two minutes and Sugar barely complained. Such a great instruction. I HIGHLY recommend this approach for those with finicky kitties. Thank you SO much!
I think the most important part is to be calm. Animals sense distress very well and if you aren't calm, it just adds to the cats frustration. I use to work at a veterinary clinic and if any of the owners of their cats were anxious, it would making assisting the animal rather hard. This is a good video. I liked how the man stayed assertive and very very calm. The blanket is a great method to use as well. Thanks!
Jenece Amiker I know. I can't find the 2nd one to help. But, my Siamese is overdue for his mani/pedi and one way or the other, I've got to get it done. A few months ago, I had a friend take me to a vet's to do it. They work in twos, they don't have the cat's human "mom" in the room and they're very quick. My cat doesn't seem any the worse. But, I'm late again and didn't feel like spending $18 plus cab fare there ad back to get it done. Perhaps I'll try the burrito one more time. If you don't hear back from me, that means he's nicked a femoral artery and left me to bleed out....kidding...well sort of kidding...I do suspect that blood will be out there and it won't be his. ;)
Sutapa Bhattacharya , LOL! I ended up having someone come in and cut his nails. She charged me $30! I had to scruff him while she clipped! He's ready for another mani/pedi as he woke me up this morning with a scratch on my lip and my face. He forgets that those Siamese talons of his can hurt people. I tried to fake it and pretend I was still asleep but, then he began to give me a morning facial with his tongue! When I peeked out with one eye and tried to move away those big baby blues of his were inches away from me! :D Thanks for checking in on me! LOL!
Thanks for your comments. The main idea behind this approach with my toe-sensitive cat, is to help provide a place were they fee "safe" and to also restrict their movement. I roll up the soft fuzzy blanket so that she can breath but also can't really get her claws out to scratch me. If I remain calm, this helps the cat pick up my emotions and also be a bit calmer. The blanket "tube" allows only two ways to escape, front or back. So, make sure you praise the cat for being calm. :-)
IKR! I commented on that too, thats NOT an angry cat, my Bella is one bad azz angry cat when it comes to clipping nails or simply trying to catch her to put her in her pet carrier. I leave the nail clipping to the Vet.
The trimmer is so awesome as he manages to trim the nails so quickly while minimizing the cat's fright and protecting himself all at the same time! Bravo!
You did a great job here. Those toenail trimmers are the best to use. My only suggestion would be to clip each nail ONCE and be happy with that! Otherwise you did a marvelous job with her and the trim. I have been a vet tech for 42 years but I know what it's like to do this at home!
I just tried this on my cat and it absolutely worked! She usually doesn't bite or scratch, but she pulls her paw away quickly last second and it makes it dangerous to trim her nails. We wrapped her up in a scarf and covered her face and she just went completely docile. Thank you for this video!
my cat would never allow himself to be rolled up like that.. you kidding me? he is like a ninja.. nope..and if it worked once it will never work again.
Thank You so much!!! Your method was fantastic. I have really been struggling with a cat that can really fight. It probably took less than 2 minutes with a minimum of fuss. I am so appreciative.
Totally works for Kat! You just have to wrap them up good and snug, and be sure to keep that towel tucked over their face so they can't see a "way out." And talking softly and nicely helps too. :)
Our Tabby is very hyper and strikes out so we had never cut his mail in two years out of fear but we watched your post and were able to do the front claws ina matter of minuted! Thank you for posting this!
today I finally decided I was gonna follow through with clippin my cats nails because his claws are so damn sharp couldn't take it anymore pinching me while sitting on my lap. Hes a nice cat but I still wasn't able to trim his nails as he attacks the nail clippers. I wrapped him in a towel tightly both arms were sticking out and it worked out perfectly would be even easier if there was a second person to help me. I put on gardening gloves and as he was struggling wrapped in the towel I fed him treats to ease his stress and to make positive association. it actually worked I managed to get all his front nails. Back nails are not necessary as they are not sharp. you really just have to hold the cat tight and tighten the towel, the tighter the towel(not tight to the point where its torture) just tight enough to hold the cat in place. also where gloves if you are nervous and feed the cat a treat meanwhile.
The trick I did with my cat was to wait until she was sleeping. Then, I gradually did one or two nails at a time until she was comfortable with me doing a whole paw. After a few times, she didn't fight me at all when it came to nail trimming time. (Well, until yesterday when she bit me)
This video helped me so much! My 7 month old cat even looks like your cat. She is marked the same. I tried this on my cat to put nail caps on. This made it so much easier. She kinda liked being rolled up in a blanket and it made my job easier. She didn't fight it near as much. Good job! Thank You!
You are a wonderful person. I have been trying to get my cat to let me brush her teeth peacefully for years. I think the "hug" of the blanket helps her.
The person cutting kitty’s nails is supremely calm and centered-that’s why kitty doesn’t seem aggressive. I am so impressed. I hope I can handle my beloved fractious cat this calmly. She really needs to be brushed and her nailed clipped.
I know this is a super old video so I’m not sure if you’re still checking comments but I’m so glad it’s still up. This is an excellent way to show how to keep stress as low as possible for a highly anxious cat. I’ll be using this on my two nervous kitties shortly. Many thanks from Australia 🇦🇺
I got one of her back paws done and that is amazing. She normally doesn't let me do the back at all. She is very sensitive with me or anyone touching her paws...especially the back ones. Thanks again.
Thank you for this video! My neighbor’s cat desperately needed his talons cut. He always wanting to come hang out but he’s a Jeckle/Hyde cat with Freddy Krueger claws. I tried your technique and got the front paws done. Will do the back feet tomorrow. I didn’t want to push my luck. Thanks again!
This is by far the best techniques I've seen for claw trimming extra stubborn cats. She's safe and secure in the blanket with no risk for cutting wrong or to much, witch can easily happen if the move to much!
This video was a big help! My tabby is a fighter so this turned into a 2 person job. I clipped while my brother held her. Took about 3 mins overall. thanx.
Man: That wasn't so bad, was it? That wasn't so bad"? Cat: Speak for yourself, how'd you like it if you got something trimmed off of you? (Looking at shorts)
Place the towel down on the floor so it's ready. Fold slightly wider than the cat's lengths nose to tail. Invite your cat, if willing, to come over to be petted. Bribe with a treat, yum! If not willing, gently pick your cat up and bring over to the pre-positioned towel. Pet nicely, telling her (my cat's a girl) what a good cat she is. At this "happy-point", you press down on the back of the cat & they will squat down on their belly. Flip up the edge & start rolling feet outside at first.
OMG. This actually worked! I have a feral cat that is adorable. She's been with me for 5 months but she is so skittish. She doesn't like being pet or handled. I got a hold of her just before her dinner and wrapped her snug in a large towel. She was immobile. I cuddled her and re-assured her and gave her a few kisses, then went to work. All claws clipped. She growled but didn't try to bite or fight. Then I let her go, fed her and she's a happy kitty not getting her claws caught on the carpet. Thank you!
We recently adopted two kittens; 7 & 9 mos. Unfortunately the older of the two is NOT a fan of nail trimming. As soon as I try to snip, she cries (no growling, hissing or biting). Thank goodness I came across this video! Thank you soooo much for posting your pearls of wisdom. While I didn't need to use the towel to cover her eyes, the "burrito towel" worked like a charm. Thank you again!!!!
Wow, what a kind and patient man you are; giving a cat that probably lived out her first years in sheer hell, the love and care that all sentient beings long to have. There isn't the least bit of feeling threatened or anger in your voice. You're smart enough to know that her fear and anger aren't personal towards you, really. It's about her environment growing up. Good for you, for giving her a chance at life. There aren't enough people like you in the world, but unkindly, there are far too many, willing to let many dogs and cats have litter after litter, without a thought for where those offspring will live. If they live;; how they live. No thought whatsoever. I don't understand people like that; and the dogs bred for fighting.....disgusting. Anyway this cat.......that she may actually live out her final years as a trusting and happy furry being, is a real heart warming possibility and a testament to how human beings can live to their best potential. I don't think I have ever said this to anyone on You Tube, but thanks for being the kind of human being you turned out to be; your parents must be awesome, too And thanks for sharing that, right from the beginning; how you rolled her in a small carpet/big towel and then used another towel to protect yourself (and ultimately her) from her teeth and claws. I wondered if you started trimming the back claws, because if she had gotten loose while starting with the front, she could have kangerooed you into a bloody mess with her un-clipped back claws? So, just wondered if that was your reasoning behind starting with the back claws. Also, does rolling her in that small long carpet act like a sort of Valium.? I've heard the pressure of those Thunder Shirts wrapped around the torso of a dog, does calm them, and so I wondered if it was the same principal for cats. Thanks again. Good lesson for the skittish with equally skittish kitties.
On my third attempt I managed to wrap my rescue kitty Lily up using the 'burrito' method shown and cut her front and back claws. I didn't cut them as short as I could have, and I had a few issues with low growling (mine) and flat ears (hers), but she got over her bad self when I was done and she had some chicken treats. Thanks so much for the help!
Omg this is something I need to try with my kitty…who also hates having her toes trimmed Very funny and cute 🥰 I love ❤️ that she’s a rescue kitty and mad as hell lol 😆
Worth a try, thank you! I have one jumpy rescue who hates her feet touched but her nails have been getting stuck in the carpet lately. Thanks for posting!
I trimmed both my babies claws this weekend. they were not happy with me at all. I'm going to try the blanket wrapping method to get their bottom claws. this was really helpful!
OMG i'v been trying to trim my cat for the past 2 weeks and every time i try my cat scratch me and 5 minutes ago i saw your video and i try it right away and it work finally i trim my cat omg THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH GOD BLESS YOU
My cat used to let me trim her nails as long as she had treats in sight so she knew there would be a reward. But in the last few months that has stopped working and she doesn't let me go near her at all with the trimmers. I have heard about the 'burrito method' before but thought that my cat would scratch my face off before I even got her wrapped up. My boyfriend and I just tried again but this time we covered her face like you did in your video and it went much smoother! thanks for the demonstration!
Bless you for showing so much love and patience to a kitty with such a terrible past. This reminds me of the time I was trying to trim the claws of a feisty young cat, who kept escaping from the towel. Since there was nobody around to help me, I shut us both into the bathroom so she couldn't run away. Then I wrapped her tightly in a bigger blanket, with just her head poking out, and and lay on the floor with her body tucked under mine and one front paw poking out. I thought I had all the sharp parts under wraps - until she whipped her head up and bit right through my lower lip! She is 12 now, still feisty, and it still takes two people to clip her claws. TIP: A towel wrap is a good way to get a resistant cat into a pet carrier - just roll them in the towel, place "purrito" into carrier, then pull out the towel!
I should have watched this video before!!! I tried for one hour just got two done and she got so mad that she bit me!! After watching this video I rolled her burrito style and it worked!!! Thank you soooo much!!!!
This takes a lot of practice and patience. With Buster, I am lucky to get one or two claws trimmed at a time which is no easy undertaking. I also have much more success when he is sleepy.
Got cat from SPCA 3 weeks ago. They knew NOTHING about him except he had been stray a long time & was lethargic. Safe @ home with me his "bad" behaviour surfaced. Just survived his eye infection. 3 pills/day & eye drops 7 times/day. Asked Vet to show me how to do eye drops but it took 3 of us @ Vets to do it. @ home I was on my own. NOW it's claw trimming time & my hands are shredded. Was thinking he might have to go back to shelter if I couldn't care for him properly. Thanks MASSIVELY 4 hope.
