In this episode I go over in detail the steps you need to take when a piece of marine electronic equipment like a GARMIN ECHOMAP PLUS won't turn on. I walk you through the procedure of how to pin point where the root of the problem is, as wells as giving a short lesson about voltage, electricity & basics on how to use a multi-meter. Thank you so much for this video!!! My console Garmin just went out. I had already decided I was going to buy a new one. Then I came across this video. I’m an accountant - not an electrician. I didn’t even know what a multimeter was! After spending $25 on one, I followed your protocol, and found that that particular positive connection under the console was not getting any juice. Popped it on another available positive prong - BINGO. You got yourself a new subscriber!

Thanks for this video. Last night everything was working great when I was checking everything before my trip today. Got out on the water and had no power to my electronics. Only way I got it to work was to squeeze the cradle and the head unit together and then it would power up. Not something you want on the first trip of the year lol. Turns out it’s a bad cradle

Hi Heath, Great job on the diagnostics. Knowing how to find the problem can save a lot of time and money. I put a little oil on the pin connectors to help prevent corrosion. I'm going back to NJ tomorrow to visit family and friends. I'll be back home on Monday afternoon. I will watch your Sunday video on Monday night or Tuesday. Hi Mickey, thanks for watching. So, I've been involved in general contracting for almost 30 years... Troubleshooting is in my blood... I'm always trying to see if something can be fixed before I scream for help. I put a little dab of dielectric grease to help out with corrosion, but the saltwater doesn't care. Glad it was just the cradle and not the unit. These units are expensive nowdays. Good job on the analysis to find the root cause!

But then my good sense kicked in and I decided to try and reverse engineer the problem and it worked out. Made it even better when Garmin gave the replacement free. I have been there before with some of my earlier Lowrance HDS units, and Lowrance did help, not by replacing out of warranty, but by offering discounted units that I could select from. I guess they had overstock. I was able to pick an upgrade but still had to pay, but again, at a great discount. However, the new HDS Live units are excellent and have been holding up great so far. There is nothing like a unit that does not power up! I also have a Garmin handheld in case of any serious electronics failures since I normally go out 60 miles off NC coast. I love to watch you fish in Boca. I lived there for 7 years and wish I could find some way to come back and enjoy that area. I could save a lot of fuel as fishing there is just a few miles off the beach for offshore pelagics!

Any body have any knowledge with the Garmin Marin Multi Function Displays? I have a Garmin 7602 stuck in boot recovery loader screen. Force update doesn’t work. How could someone go about reprogramming the chip. I have a T56 programmer but I am new to PCB repair, early in my education. I’m active on some discord channels for repair but obvious these aren’t common. I’m hunting everyone for help with these as eventually repairs on these specifically is the niche I’m after perusing!

I'd contact Garmin's online customer support and tell them what's going on. They're really good at responding and can walk you through some troubleshooting.

Most of the problems are connector problems or wiring problems. It’s usually the female connector is too loose on the male connector. It tests out for voltage but the voltage never makes a good connection. Power/ground wire going into the cradle, or the power/ground going from the cradle to the head unit. Because people remove and install these units many times so people don’t steal them the female connectors get widened out.
