Welcome to another Far Bank Fly Fishing school episode. This episode is the first in a two part mini series that focuses on one of my all time favorite ways to fly fish for trout in a river- something simply called Trout Spey. Trout Spey has rapidly gained popularity in the river trout world in the US, and is a side to fly fishing that can bring you so much enjoyment. It is tricky, but rewarding, and the gear and terminology can bamboozle the most experienced piscator, but it can rapidly become an addiction. In this first part we simply look at the gear needed to stick your toe in this wild water, review some of the basics of grip and stance, and also take a peek at the key casts you need to be successful in the trout Spey world.
GEAR
Looking for a good kit to get stated in Trout Spey? Redington makes it easy with the TROUT SPEY FIELD KIT. An all-in-one kit including Trout Spey Rod, Reel, Line, Leader and Tip. Just add flies and your ready to get started!

I’m feel like the boy in the back of the classroom praying the teacher doesn’t choose him but unlike that little boy I’m actually learning something, something that I want to understand better. You have a wonderful manor of teaching. Easy to follow plus it’s obvious you want everyone to succeed. I can’t wait to watch Vol. 2. Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. Wes

I fly fish for everything, small creek browns, brooks and rainbows, great lakes salmon and steelhead, bass, pike, and even walleye. Recently i was gifted a 16 foot, bamboo spey rod, and i was considering using it fo chinook and cohos. My main concern is that i generally use a 10 wt minimum as 25+ lb chinook are not uncommon. Should i put some 7-8 weogh line on the rod or kust make it a centerpin for using roe?

We believe a 16ft bamboo rod is more like an 11wt, or maybe a 10wt. If so, a 7/8 line would be too light.
